connectivity

amazing talaga ng power ng technology na ito, internet. sarap for research work. grabeh. loads of info talaga at your fingertips, literal. times like these naiisip ko talagang ICT4ME ang adbokasya ko hehe. dedma na sa tumutuligsa sa mga ict4d eks. it works for me, man.

been doing research on four topics (oo grabeh multi-tasker talaga akesh) simultaneously the whole day. productive naman. weird lang yung opac ng peyups. yung libro on literature, nasa masscomm lib. yung book on film and feminism, nasa cswcd lib. nubayan. wafung.

abah interesting lately ang mga blog comments ko ha. ei, you can email this blogsterkid at my newly created blog email, leaflens@gmail.com. kung nahihiya kayong mag-comment dito. sa email tayo maghuntahan. dedma na sa spammers. magaling ang gmail mag-filter eh hehe.

i stumbled upon this queer encyclopedia site and it's so great. however, as i was browsing their mainpage, may obits list sa gilid, mga notable queers na kamamatay lang plus description and background.

grabe lang yung napansin ko. puro "survived by her partner of thirty-three years" o kaya "survived by her partner of fifty years." ponyetah ang tatagal namang nagsama ng mga byaning na ito.

this gets me thinking again. parang afraid yung thought. i think the hopeless/hapless romantic in me died already because i can say these things now, pero i don't think i'm comfy with settling down with one person for that long! 30 years? 20? not even 10. parang i dread the thought. i really wonder why. pero i just do. siguro na-reinvent ko na nga ang outlook in life ko and  i really don't like the idea of depending on one person for that long. i'd rather be alone actually. or kung may kasama man, siguro hindi na kami aabot ng senior citizen status. at least ako, parang ayokong umabot ng ganun. ewan ko. baka naloloka lang ako or what, pero the thought of growing old scares me na nga, growing old with one person pa.  hm, siguro subliminally, alam ko kasing if i grow old with someone, i will be the one who will do most of the "caregiving" chores (based on my herstory).  parang di ko ata dig yun. i'd rather give care to myself. selifsh ba? ewan ko. basta weird lang ito sa akin. the concept of 'til death do us part.' ick.

not to say na i don't advocate for lgbt marriage. i do. we all have the right to enjoy civil liberties no matter who we are. siguro yun bang thought na you depend on one person for your happiness, sanity, eklat, chuvalulu, mga kantang "how do i live without you" chorva ang anthem. mukhang i'm rebelling on that. short of promoting polygamy na ba ito? hindi naman siguro. i still believe we shouldn't spread ourselves thinly like that, keeping multiple (steady) partners and all. taxing talaga yun at mga matatapang (at may datung) na tao lang ang may kaya nun. i'm not like that, i know. hm, maybe if i turn into a billionaire tomorrw, huway nat? hehe. kidding.

basta. yes, it's so sweet and so romantic, being with "the one" eklat. pero frankly, i don't think there is just one for you.  people never get satisfied; that's a fact. parang tattoo yan e. do you wanna get stuck with one design forever? masyadong mahal magpa-remove nun kaya you have to think hard about the design or if you really want one. kaya nga i settle for henna kasi ako, nagsasawa ako sa design. at least henna puwede mo ilipat lipat. you cherish the first half na malinaw pa siya. and then you just try to move on pag fading na.

henna tattoo and love. what an analogy.

well, i guess nasasabi ko na kasi ito dahil nakaka-ilang relasyon na rin naman akong matagal. as in, serial monogamy type, for as short as 3 months to as long as 5 years. so i guess i learn some things from those times. and the thing that i've learned is, hindi dapat tayo nagpapatali sa length of time. if it's  time to move on, we should do it.  saka it's nice to be alone sometimes. i'm valuing that now. hindi talaga natatapos ang saga ng pagkilala sa sarili, kaya kelangang di ito kaligtaan ninuman.

well, to each her own. violent reactions welcome. e me.

ps nood kayo nitong film.

The Seven Deadly Sins Quiz on 4degreez.com

heeheeehee. kala ko gluttony ang una ko. especially after super-super-stuffing myself with the most delicious lamb and roast beef i tasted in my life last night.  grabeh the australians really have a knack for tasty treats. yummy. but their wine still sucks a bit. sayang, dapat nag-beer ako. baka better sila sa beer.

australian day kahapon. upfi representation kami as usual. sayang at nagsabay siya sa indian day. mas colorful sana yun. next year.

kala ko nagsawa na ko kakapunta sa mga ganitong embassy day functions, di pa pala. not when they can serve more delicious food every year. saka it's always nice to observe people who attend these functions. alam mo naman ako, people-watcher.  interesting indeed.

sabagay, depende nga sa emba yun. dati kasi, we always had a steady invite during bastille day, france's national holiday. i go there for the wine and cheeses. food minsan. but the peeps there are really sooooo...  soooo... basta i don't like going to french thingies anymore. as much as possible. if i can help it. spanish pa keri. i like looking at the large paella lutuan there. kakaiba. :)

daze of being whiled

i hate it when it rains. especially when i'm outside or when i need to go out.  may bagyo ba?

prang gusto ko na lang mag-stay sa bahay at magmukmok kasama ang sandamakmak na gamit, gadget at isipin.

hay, hirap 'pag lutang ka... sobra.

the only good thing about the rain is that it gives additional texture to lighting design by wetting the streets. wet streets absorb more light and it doesn't make your film look dull. notice how night scenes in most hollywood movies have wet streets, na parang kakaulan lang o sinadya nilang paulanin ng konti tapos wala na para wet ang street. that is actually for cinematographic purposes. i learned that from an american cinematographer eons ago when i was still young and wanted to be a cinematographer myself.

comme ca

eto, hindi ko binasa ang kalye. kakatapos lang umulan at nasa isang establishment ako sa the fort yata ito (can't remember; the night was forgettable). good thing i was outside in the overlooking area and had my camera then kaya may-i-shoot ko itong flyover na itich. the speeding car reminded me of the delorean in BACK TO THE THE FUTURE. kyut.

anyway, stay dry, folks. will try to do the same.

read muna review ko ng UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION here.

wala lang. it's just amazing to discover what kinds of things happen within the vicinity of your birth date during different eras in different countries.

here is what happened in portugal:

The Carnation Revolution (Portuguese, Revolução dos Cravos) was an almost bloodless, left-leaning, military-led revolution started on April 25, 1974, in Lisbon, Portugal, that effectively changed the Portuguese regime from an authoritarian dictatorship to a liberal democracy after a two-year process of a Left-wing semi-military administration. Although government forces killed four people before surrendering, the revolution was unusual in that the revolutionaries did not use direct violence to achieve their goals. The population, holding red carnations, convinced the regime soldiers not to resist. The soldiers readily swapped their bullets for flowers. It was the end of the Estado Novo, the longest authoritarian regime in Western Europe (but not the last to fall).

kewl, eh? check it out on wikipedia.

hehe wala lang. i'm procrastinating, as usual. but it's good that when i procrastinate, i blog. still writing, devah?

anyways see you tomorrow if you're going to the conspiracy gig. wala palang free drink yun, bummer. sorry about that. i forgot kurips nga pala ang conspi.

hansaya lang super nung kickoff party ng first international jazz and arts fest sa podium last friday hehe. libre eh! there's this band who opened doing electrosamba, nyko maka (sp?). eh more like mejochaka.  haha taray ko. the electronica stuff saved 'em.

then the kool kats swinging eklat (yeah, komplete with the pomada hairstyle and retro joutfit na parang niluwa sila ng tin pan alley time) called brass monkeys played. nakakasawa pala pakinggan ang all-male band pag matagal hane? all-male swingjazzband. or that's just me. then this sirocco world music band from australia came, complete with an aboriginal dancer ek. eh parang "white man music with black man culture display" ang dating pero katuwa lang ang aborigine na yun ha when he danced. sana sya na lang ever, naalibadbadaran ako sa white dudes. colonisadores! hehe.

then the happy happy rio-inspired !carnavale! number followed. hansayasayasaya lang manood nun! the beat, the songs, the dance, the shaking booties, the colors! i swear, the next time i get down and depressed and hopeless and brokenhearted all at the same time, i will up and leave and head for brazil!!! like instantly! without looking back!  baka doon ko makita lahat ng hinahanap ko sa buhay. naunahan na nga ko ng isang kaibigan sa latin-am adventure na yun eh. i was trying to connect with a former colleague about something and when he answered me via email, he said he was already in argentina making a living as a waiter! shucks inggit ako! parang ang sarap lang na experience nun. parang yung former editor na kilala ko who backpacked in europe and ended up as a waiter in france to earn a living for 2 months. shet stuff that writers' dreams are made off.

I WANNA TRAVELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL agen.

and then of course our own beloved world music fusion group pinikpikan capped the night. it was sheer fun when they play. parang nung saturday gig nila sa bistro. i love watching them live because they're the only band who can turn the house (as in, inuman house) into a dance party. as in literal, tumatayo lahat para sumayaw. dapat sa gig places na may dancefloor na legit sila tumugtug eh para ayos at walang nababanggang lamesa o monitor. hansayasaya. eh lam nyo naman ang lola nyo, mahilig sumayaw ini. ayaw nga maniwala nina mam gigi whenever we always end up at savarin with dinner guests. eh sila lounge singing ang trip. sabi ko nga, i betray my last name; i should have been named "bailar" instead of "cantor" dapat. sa totoo lang.

well sya sige sa uulitin.

all part of the business

if you can tell me where that quote came from, i will kiss you hehehe. ching!

share ko lang ang isang kalokahan ngayong hapon. as in, kanina lang. grabeh. kelangan ko lang i-unload.

this is in the form of an email to my co-workers.

thank goodness i subsribe to meditative buddhist thought. kundi... ox and taurus will emerge.

just to give you an update of sorts.

it's 1.13pm as i write this on a monday and behn cervantes just stormed out.

he came here looking for (our boss) and was saying na he talked already to someone ek ek about what he wants from us.

(our research assistant)  referred him to me since (our boss) is out. the first thing he asked was, how old am i.

tapos he went on to tell me about this first american actress in the phil during the 50s who is here on a sentimental visit to the phil and he thinks masscomm should take advantage of this. she's leaving for iloilo next week and whatever forum he wants should be this week daw.

sabi ko, baka hindi ganon kabilis ma-arrange kung this week na kasi kelangan pang mag-gather ng maraming tao and create publicity for it para di naman sayang.

sabi niya "well, if you're seeing it as a problem! it's a problem! everything is a problem!"

sabi ko hindi naman sa ganun pero gusto lang natin i-maximize ang event just in case.

and then i asked him kung kailan kaya babalik yung actress from iloilo and he said something like, "she's not coming back! okay, if that's how you see it! (calling his alalay) come on, let's go!" and left huffing and puffing.

there you go.

it's people like him that makes me thankful that i am not in showbiz anymore.

to quote jim morrison, people are strange.

comments are welcome.

astrological advice

some people might pooh-pooh the astrological zodiac descriptions and prescriptions of individuals' signs, but i don't. in fact, it's a good reminder that bigger things work around you and over you especially whenever one is so overwhelmed and preoccupied only with the things that work within him/herself.

and to quote a friend, sabi niya matagal na nga namang inoobserbahan ang mga planetary motions eklavu na yan sa astrology so it must have some sort of bearing in our lives as humans.

mizmoh. di ba bles? :)

kaya i listen to the stars today and here is what they have to say:

Relationships have shown you a path toward growth that has pushed you beyond your old comfort zone. It's not time to pull back out of fear, but it is wise now to reassess your destination in light of your current position. Today, it's better to be realistic than idealistic.
The feisty red planet, Mars, symbolizes the direct expression of physical energy. The large gaseous planet, Jupiter, acts in an expansive manner. Today, after weeks of moving slowly toward alignment, they are in exact opposition. We are fired up and ready to go, but our reactions to current circumstances may be overstated. Additionally, with the Moon in proud Leo, we need to be noticed and appreciated. Although potential may truly be greater now than usual, a little self-restraint is still a wise course of action.

it's so true. lalo na talaga today. applicable sa aking life. tama, it's better to be realistic than idealistic, especially in all relationships i have today, lalung-lalo na sa work relationship ko with some people. hay...basta i should just remember millennium resolution numero uno lagi. lagi lagi lagi. intiendes????

new millennium resolutions

hindi na uso ang new year's resolutions. hindi rin naman natin natutupad e. dapat we should think big, think grand. we should think of resolutions that can cover our current lifetime that can also have good bearing in our forthcoming lifetime pa.

hence, i am crafting my NEW MILLENNIUM'S RESOLUTIONS. kung si dalai lama may ethics for a new millennium, ako si dalai libai at may resolutions na susubukang gawing life guide.

new millennium resolution number 1: never ever ever ever work with matapobre rich donyas and dons.  even if they pay you a million pesos.  your dignity and self-worth is worth much much more than that.

new millennium resolution number 2:  no kind of work is more important than your health, so rest.  ganito lang yun: yung perang makukuha sa trabaho, ipang-oospital mo lang kung hindi ka magpahinga.  hindi na uso ang "working to death" na expression honeys.

new millennium resolution number 3:  magbawas kumain ng baboy.  and i mean in any forms.  with exception: kung libre ang kainan at inimbitahan ka, don't offend the inviting party and eat some. saka libre eh. pero yung effort na ikaw ang bibili o magluluto, wit! wa na pig! no mo' pork!

new millennium resolution number 4: drink more water.  para di ma-dehydrate.

new millennium resolution number 5: tune out whenever people around you become unbearably negative.  remember, if you can't change the situation, change how you react towards the situation.

o yun na muna for now. dadagdagan natin yan eventually. any suggestions? mag-comment dyan.

sige fly muna akesh.

“Lesbiyana Lesbiyana Paano ka Isinapelikula?”
A look at women-loving-women portrayals in mainstream Philippine cinema
by Libay Linsangan Cantor

How are women-loving-women being portrayed in Philippine cinema today?

Since the film Tatlo Magkasalo was commercially shown in 1998, the topic of lesbianism as a central storyline was rarely – if barely – touched upon again by Filipino filmmakers within the mainstream field. There have been a few lesbian or bisexual female characters and lesbian-oriented storylines in a few films, but most – if not all – of these portrayals are not of a major stature. What kind of portrayals are these? How do they show the lives, loves and preoccupations of today’s Filipino lesbian? Do they present a range of characterizations or perpetrate stereotypes that lead to derogatory personifications? But before asking where these characters are today, perhaps we need to ask how lesbians were portrayed in Philippine cinema in the past.

This paper will try to examine the image/s of the lesbian in mainstream cinema through an informal survey of commercially-exhibited films within the last three decades. By selecting certain popular examples, the paper will try to comprehend the celluloid life of the woman-loving-woman – how they were given spaces within the story, how their stories were carried out, and how their personas were treated in whole. This analysis of a Philippine cinematic “lesbian herstory” hopes to produce meaningful insights and hopefully also lead us to a more enlightened and empowered filmic representation of the lesbian experience.

Ms. Libay (Olivia) Linsangan Cantor is an instructor at the UP Film Institute where she finished her BA Film and Audiovisual Communication degree in 1995. She also serves as UPFI’s Faculty Coordinator for Academic Programs and Research. Currently, she is finishing her MA English Studies: Creative Writing at the UP College of Arts and Letters.

Ms. Cantor has garnered honors in different fields such as writing (two Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature in 1997; honorable mention at the Film Development Foundation of the Philippines Inc. 1998 scriptwriting competition); photography (“one of the five highly commendable photographers” at the 2005 World Association for Christian Communication International Photographic Competition, UK) and video (“Jeep Tip” short documentary honored as an “Official Selection” at the 2005 Chicago Filipino-American Film Festival, USA).

She was the co-founder of U.P. Sappho Society, the first university-based lesbian organization in the Philippines. She is currently an applicant of the professional literary organization Artista Para sa Kultura at Dalumat ng Bayan Ink. (Akdang_Bayan).

Her short stories, poems, essays, film/media and cultural/gender analyses/criticism articles have been published in different book anthologies, print and online publications in the Philippines, Australia, Canada and the USA.

bite me!

man, not another (somewhat) weirdly-strapped woman in a tight black outfit!  :)  but this one, excited ako. :)

saw the first one years ago and it was interesting. medyo hindi ko alam ang storyline when i bought the dvd pero nagandahan ako kasi i like good/creative vampire storylines, lalo na pag babae ang bida. first time ko atang makanood ng isang kick-ass vampire woman bida.

yan ang tunay na queen of the damned! hehe. you go, girl! love the contact lenses btw.

and yet another one!

er, okay, no gunslings here. swordslings (?) or bowslings (?, nag-iimbento lang ako) puwede na rin. basta may woman in tight dark leathery outfit with gothic-looking weapons, keri na rin. hehe kaya lang hindi talaga siya ang bida. sayang. latinas rule pa naman. :P but michelle rodriguez looks better in the official site. the intensity of that stare, man! i swear! did you see her in GIRLFIGHT? knockout stare.

i actually wanted to play this game dati pa pero feeling ko, di kaya ng computer ko. saka na lang.

i dunno. i really like vampire eklats. at least good ones ha. unlike that freaking tarantino film years ago. vampires kasi are cool creatures -- they're sexy/erotic, dangerous/deadly, and so homoerotic! hehe. naghanap na naman ng kakampi...

ewan, basta. kung may iba dyan feeling nila sirena sila, ako siguro feeling ko vampire ako hehe. chos. look at the hours i keep! saka parang kewl maging immortal. tatambay lang ako forever sa library of alexandria chenelyn at magbabasa ng libro. at manonood ng pelikula. minsan gagawa rin hehe. and will finally learn how to play the violin. tsk. hindi kasi kasya ang isang century sa lahat ng gusto kong gawin eh.

oh, will also try to scare the shit out of our politicians, the real bloodsuckers. dami na namang rate inflation putangna. ipagbili kaya nila yang mga luxury cars nila para mabayaran ang mga punyetang utang ng utilities? bad trip.

sige na nga sleep na.

but do check out mmfe2005 reviews ko here.

and man oh man, how i wish i were the one who wrote this EXODUS review! hilarious grabeh!

it's just funny to note where the filmmakers got the name "King Bagulbul" the villain of that film (horribly played by JayR -- oh sorry, was he acting in that film? i thought he was merely doing action shots for rap album pictorials hehe). bagulbul is a slang term used by PNP Academy cadets/students to refer to complaining in secret. my friend carol bello, having taught there before, used the term as the title of a song she performs with her other band sheelahnagig. nakakailang performances na rin naman sila with that song. unless dwight gaston the writer heard it in PNPA, i'm thinking he or someone who works with him picked it up from these sheelahnagig performances.things that make you go hmmmm...

well, ganyan talaga ang showbiz.

sya, gudnayt.

02 January 2006

and what have you done?

continuing to share my photos lang, this time the xmas lightstuff all around.

for me, this is the best part of xmas -- the lights display. i always like looking at them, kahit mga home-made. sayang lang at di natuloy ang plano ko to roam around the city and take night pictures. mahirap na kasing gawin yun when you don't have a car anymore. kaya kung ano lang ang nasa aking vicinity ang nakuhanan ko. not much, but it was okay na rin.

  peyups xmas

can you see the oblation from here?

quezon hall

e eto, can you see the oblation from here? joke.

vuleklekz

ngayon ko lang napansin ang mga lighted flowers as xmas decor. kelan pa nagsimula yun?

alumni wall

bahay ng alumni hall with the traditional ready-to-buy tivoli light structures

kapuso tree

just whizzing by gma7. okay, so they're not truly imaginative tree-decorators but hey, they're still in top ranking diba? so who cares?

glowstix!

another reason why i love xmas, esp lantern parade time at peyups. i get to buy these stuff. maabaw lang kaligayahan ko; basta may ilaw pa sila, happy na ako hehe.

blustix

saya! akala ko purple ito, nang ilawan ko, bluish. weird.

multicolor

nice no? wala, ako lang yata natutuwa sa glowstix. ah, aside frm those who take ecstacy. iba ang nakikita nila.  hehe.

heniwey, was also tinkering with the design of my other blog, the one i got from dotph for free when i attended the blogging summit last summer. i just got one for the sake of having a .ph address sana and besides, the were offering for free (may bayad kasi pero now, siguro due to popular demand, they have free offerings na aside from the paid ones). kaya lang back then, their designs were rather limited. i wanted something like this here, yung light text on dark background, but their tech/design dudes didn't know how to do that pa. kaya iniwan ko muna.

binalikan ko recently and nadagdagan na ang designs nila, and it somehow approximates what i was looking for, so puwede na ulit. kaya i want to introduce this other site kung saan ko ilalagay ang mga reviews ko, mostly films and books pero anything media-related ida-dump ko na rin doon, para mas pormal. saka para it will live up to its name na maging well-oiled prolific reviews writer ulit ako at hindi ever kalawangin.

check out anti-rust punditry or as i term it, arp-arp.

hapi nu yir everyone. have a safe and orgasmic one. :P

28 October 2005

venue voodoo woowoo huhu

hay thank goddess the week's almost over! was able to pull off two events which i helped organize with dear friends.

first up is the LGBT NIGHT AT CONSPIRACY last tuesday. writers' night usually yun pero v.e.c.n. gave us a free hand to create whatever so we made it an artsfest thingie. the lowdown later na.

second one was FEMINISTA SERIES: WOMYN'S NIGHT SA BISTRO last wednesday at 70s bistro naman. masaya siya. it was some kind of recharging experience for women artists, i have to admit. it was a good idea to begin with. i'm glad the women artists whom we asked to perform showed up. they all showed up! saya! at nasayahan din sila! saka yung crowd. super. the lowdown later na lang ulit. tutal wala naman akong pupuntahang bakasyunan ngayung undas, dito na lang ako sa blog magbabakasyon ng isipin hehe.

what i really want to blog about now are venue brouhahas. there have been a lot lately. actually, in all my years as a restaurant/cafe/bar reviewer, marami-rami na rin akong nakitang bad places. bad service, bad owner, bad rules and regulations etc. pero lately, parang dumarami ulit sila. at pag hindi nasita, wala talagang mangyayaring maganda sa kanila.

saka di lang ako nakakakita nito. friends ko rin first-hand experience na talaga. at saka nadadala na rin kami eh. gandang i-cite yung sinabi ni salamangkiero about xaymaca. that was totally bad. medyo rude talaga yung nangyari sa kanya dun. tsk i feel for you, man. ako rin e, parang nega sa akin ang xaymacs. since i discovered na parang ang hatak lang nila ay pera at hindi alaga sa artist, wa na. tamo nga, pinagbayad ang coverage ng islamusik. wala silang pr savvy chu. luz. parang yung naaalala ko yung kinover ko yung panino resto along esguerra dati (wala na ngayon), pinagbayad kami. laos. at sa dalawang publication ko pa sila nailabas noon ha. with pictures. well, i guess hindi sila marunong sa ganun. can't blame them though.

and then there's this thing about conspiracy rin which another friend cited. incident happened the night we were there. we were supposed to end at 10pm because as usual, conspi did some double bookings pag tuesdays. akala yata nila hindi mapupuno ng writers' events ang lugar nila kaya nagbu-book sila ng musical gig after that. laos nga e. we were asking for the whole night pero ms weather report booked orange and lemons na pala. laos. tapos vecn booked a band called tribu pa. triple booking ini, kaya nawalan ng time na kami para magbasa. ako! di nakabasa. saka si butch din sana. organizers pa ang walang time. kainis. tama ba yun? sabagay, that wasn't the first time. women's day ata yun, women's night daw. so punta ang isang women's band at ako dahil invited poetry reading daw chuva. pagdating namin dun, hala, may booked event pala ang isang writers' group spewing hacienda luisita tales. tangina. and another artist friend had the similar experience doon when their art group performed din. laos. nakakadala ano. parang walang respeto sa artist minsan.

pero eto ka. wala ring respeto sa customers pala. a media friend who used to help chorva the weather report career got dissed by the operations manager pala. received her email days ago. grabe ang rude sa kanila. hay. all because they wanted to see some fruits perform. well, next time iba na lang siguro puntahan nila.

excerpt from her letter:

"Finally, she went to our table to tell us she can only give us seats but I insisted that she must give us a table because I reserved for a table. She told me that Ms. __ only told her about our reservation that morning and that the truth was they were not accepting reservations for that band anymore. I told her that you should have told Ms. __ about it so that we were properly informed. I read to her Ms. __'s message saying she was not informed by [mgr] that she was not accepting reservations anymore so she was not able to tell me. While your operations manager was talking to us, she was cleaning up our table and leaving us behind to bring the used dishes to the kitchen which gave me the feeling that she wanted us to just leave. [My friend] told her to talk to us properly and not keep on leaving us. She continued cleaning up the table and even put used napkins on the sizzling tofu that I ordered which I haven't even finished eating. My friend told her that I was still going to eat the tofu and she answered arrogantly that she will just replace it.

After much debate and insisting to her that we deserve better service and treatment, she finally put a table in the gig room for us with five chairs. I have been a patron of your establishment since day one, particularly because I am a big supporter of the artists who own it. I always recommend Conspiracy to my friends and even forward your gig list to them or invite them when I like the featured band as last night. I am very disappointed with how your "Operations Manager" handles complaints from your costumers, the worse I have encountered so far. I'm sorry to say that no matter how Ms. ___ apologizes for her rude behavior, I have resolved not to go to Conspiracy from now on and would also stop recommending you to my friends. Damage has been done and a supposedly fun night was spoiled by this unfortunate display of ghastly customer service."

tissue on her sizzling tofu. imagine that. you don't do that to a vegetarian, man.

pero ang topper ng buwang ito ay ang kakapalan sa kapihang ako mismo ang biktima. dumalaw ako at isang friend sa cordillera coffee sa may xavierville. my friend had some business to transact with them and i simply wanted to have lunch there para tuhog na. after talking with the maitre'd (sp?) feeling dude doon, we sat and asked to be served. ten thousand years bago nakarating ang menu sa amin so we made jokes na to the effect na "oorder kami, magbabayad kami" etc. all in jest. the first time we ate kasi there, we used gcs given to us by the owners and we just wanted to sample the place. hey, that's what gcs are for, di ba?

ewan ko ba kung anong cosmic cycle ang sinusundan ni dude pero when i was trying to get his attention to pay the bill, he was making a huge effort of not making pansin sa akin. so i asked my friend for his name kasi alam niya, and i called his name and asked for the bill. as in, "chorva, can we have the bill, please?" ano ang gnawa niya? inirapan ako. my first pair of bullhorns appeared (taurus), but i tried to remain calm. i asked him again, same polite tone. "chorva, can we have the bill, please?" this time, hindi siya tumingin and he curtly said "sandali lang may ginagawa pa ako" or something to that effect. second pair of bullhorns appeared (year of the ox). handa na kong manggyera. my friend tried to calm me down.

it took another ten thousand years for him to prepare the bill and when he finally gave it to me, i politely talked to him about his attitude earlier. guess what. i was in mid-sentence -- my first sentence -- tinalikuran niya ko. i called his attention again, uminit na ulo ko, at tinalikuran na naman niya ako. grabe talaga. parang ang laki ng space nila para di mapansin ito ano. mas malaki pa ang cr sa megamall 'day, kaya alam mo ang nangyayari sa loob. they were only serving three tables inside and he was harping na marami siyang ginagawa. hey, ang conspi resto with one working server two pride marches ago ang maraming ginagawa, not you! at tatlo kaya silang tao sa kapihan. grabe. napundi na ko at nilapitan ko siya sa counter para kausapin siya, pero it turns out may angst pala siya sa amin. i asked him what the fuck was that attitude about, sabi niya "sa tingin niyo, natutuwa kami dun sa sinabi niyo kaninang magbabayad naman kami ah." WHAT THE FUCK! alam mo, naghahanap siya ng away ever. wala, warlahan ng words na kaming dalawa. tinawag ko pa ang friend ko at join siya sa warlahan ng words. yung dalawang babaeng kasama ni dude e awat na ng awat sa kanya pero ayaw paawat ni dude. my god, it was so horrible. napahiya sila ng husto sa ibang tao sa loob ng kapihan nila. and to think that the owner and her sister and the owner's niece were so kind to us when we met at a previous art event. kaya nga kami binigyan ng gc to try out their place e, and to hopefully do business nga. but no. this dude out for warlahan of words ruined everything for us. we ran into the niece in UP right after that incident and reported it to her. all apologies siya dahil sila din daw mismo may miscomm ni warladude pala regarding the business my friend was suposed to transact with them (she decided to drop the business because of that incident). grabe. and to think mam benny santos was there pa inside with a friend. ganda ng chikahan pa namin after years of not seeing each other since dumaguete workshop days. tapos ganyan pa. hay naku, kahiya kay mam benny kasi pinapahiya kami ng warladude na yun sa kayabangan niya. grabe. siguro pasalamat siya at i gave up resto reviewing couple of years ago tangina kundi yari talaga sila sa akin.

hay naku. when will service-oriented establishments be truly service-oriented? i don't subscribe to the "customer is always right" chorva pero dapat mutual respect ang i-allot ng both parties di ba? saka what do they want to cultivate ba, mga suki o kaaway? hay, cordi coffee just lost a potential suki. sayang. akala kasi nila, dedma, isang tao lang yan, may mga darating pang ibang tao na magpa-patronize sa atin. but no. karmic retribution works in this world, darling, kaya what you give, you receive. all you have to do is wait. i i don't even have to do anything at all. hay.

well, one good thing about venue booboos paid off naman kagabi. i was at the chocolate kiss and the manager gave me and my friend the dessert she owed us, she said. this was from an incident naman a week ago yata when my friend was mistreated by two waiters. nakinig naman ang owners and the waiters apologized and everything's fine and dandy na. ganun dapat. ayan, tamo, bumabalik pa rin kami dun. di ba? but not in cordi coffee na. not anymore. hay...

kakaiba lang minsan sa ganyan, ano? how much arrogance they have and all. tapos minsan, may feeling of discrimination pa. i remember a few acquaintances in drag who were asked to leave a resto when they came in because the manager said they didn't "serve people like them" or something to that effect. such discrimination. alam kong you have to abide by some dresscode and all. aba, ang gaganju nga ng mga sisterette na yun e, with mok-ap and all, da works. tapos di sila pinagsilbihan. grabe no. just like before when we had that incident at likha diwa din, spewing the same thing, that they don't want the place to be "identified with people like you." grabeeeeeeeh. galit si roselle kaya nun. sulat sa kule. ayan. apologize naman sila at dialogue chu pero wala e, damage has been done. that was in 1999 but i find myself revisiting the place this 2005. keri lang, i still like the food and service pero i don't want to encounter the owners na lang. i guess half a decade is okay to keep these things behind you. so if coffe cordillera's still there after half a decade, saka na siguro ko babalik dun. that is, kung wala na si warladude doon.

hay, this was such an eventful month, hane?

hey, may nagbukas ng authentic mediterranean food joint near my place, at doon balak kong maging suki. mababait ang servers at ang owner din, so far. at meron silang lamb! yipee! arabesque katapat ng nato's sa jimenez. yummy. may water pipe sila ha. sosi. hehe.

kain nga ko doon.

life in random order

talking with a dear friend last night for six straight hours on three different venues along morato made me realize lots of things which either i didn't want to face/admit or were so alarmingly true yet i didn't fully realize/comprehend until that time. gets?

anyway, here are some of them.

1. ang pagkairita ay may kaakibat na bahid ng pagkainggit nguni't kung ilang porsyento ay di tiyak

2. all art genre circles (esp. film mainstream or indie, literature, photography, music) each has its own mafias and sub-mafias and sub-sub-mafias and mafia clique-wannabes

3. like janet jackson said: it's all about CONTROL. and the wrong people have LOTS of it.

4. we should reclaim the word "fascism" from the depths of the negativity pit and give it a new, more positive spin

5. some cherished friends already became/turned like ginger for me: they exist there and i'm okay with that but i'm never going to go near them again because i am psychologically allergic to ginger (and morons)

6. the dearth of lesbian literature and films in the philippine context should be corrected by lesbians themselves (ourselves!)

7. tama si legally blonde reese: ENDORPHINS MAKE YOU HAPPY.

8. people whom you expect to get it, don't. people whom you thought didn't get it, did.

9. we have to redefine the meaning of FRIENDSHIP in this post/neo-colonial, post/postpost-modern, neoliberalist, post-feminist globalized world

10. i am my own worst enemy, critique, fan and psychiatrist.

11. flattery gets others somewhere.

12. political connections get others somewhere -- and something (new house, new car, new palmtop, new laptop, new cellphone, new job)

13. the country is really fucked up

14. i hate reading/watching the news na talaga as in ever

15. if martial law is declared like anytime soon, i am not physically prepared for it. so is the country.

16. i still prefer brutal honesty than blanket secrecy. bring it on, kid!

17. i loathe appointment breakers, especially those who don't notify you ahead of time. sayang ang putanginang oras ko kakahintay or kakaplano for naught.

18. keep your friends close and your enemies closer. i'm not sure if this still works for me. they sting a lot lately. it hurts to hold on.

19. money talks. it has the loudest voice in the universe. i hate that.

20. i am torn between being practical and sentimental. i have yet to discover which hurts less and which is the lesser of evils. process-in-progress.

21. i am a cat-lover trapped inside a dog-lover's body.

22. i have super low tolerance for unnecessarily noisy people but i don't know how to be zen about it (still trying)

23. i am onion-skinned when it comes to my art.

24. i still don't have patience for arrogant people, no matter how utterly talented or intelligent they are

25. people who pose as your friends sometimes DO WANT something else from you but they disguise it so cleverly that you fall into their trap until somebody saner than you nudges you and wakes you up to smell the coffee

26. UP teaches you arrogance, intentional or misplaced.

27. insecure people are the first ones who put you down

28. i am partly addicted to the internet

29. no matter how much friction you have with your parents, you still miss them sometimes

30. a spanish ex-colleague might be right: women are the worst enemies of women.

31. poetry remains elitist if you use a language other than your own native one to write it

32. no matter how much we advocates fight for our rights, achieving true social justice still seems so far a goal this millennium

33. the friends whom you wish to talk to (talk with?) are abroad. the friends who now annoy you constantly bug you to meet up and talk with them. what gives?

34. i am tehnology-dependent and i hate it and love it

35. the randomness of things early in your life prepares you for something postively definitive later on in life - and you should be thankful instead of resentful

36. people who gloat cannot admit that they stink worse than goats

37. right now, people should cherish their civil liberties (or whatever's left of them) while they can.

38. love may not be that many a splendored thing after all, unlike what the song said. we should redefine the real essence of love because most of us misinterpret it totally.

39. we should stop questioning our existence already. we're here, deal with it na lang. period.

40. i should throw nostalgia out the window forever.

kakaiba...

anyway, on to funnier things...

  The Nymph
Deliberate Brutal Sex Dreamer (DBSDf)

Sly. Sensual. Guarded. Different somehow. You are The Nymph.

It appears like you're looking for a fling or a casual sexual relationship, but it's not that simple. You're a hungry but also very careful person, and this generates a certain amount of sexual tension within you and in your relationships. In other aspects of life, you get what you want. In relationships, that's not always the case.

It's possible you intimidate potential lovers. Most likely, though, you're a little closed off--therefore mysterious--and, naturally, people find that difficult to get with. Maybe it's just part of your selection
Your exact opposite:
The Peach

Random Gentle Love Master
process, though. You've been in enough relationships to know to expose yourself slowly.

When you do feel comfortable with someone, though, your torrid sexual appetite will make her very happy. Your cautious nature is also a big asset in a long-term relationship. It might take longer for love to establish itself, but when it does, it's all the stronger.

congrats nga pala sa aming kaibigang si papa ned trespeces, writer of JOLOGZ. his digifilm TRABAHO is currently showing at the crop of digifilms sa ongoing cinemanila international filmfest nina direk tikoy aguiluz. hanggang bukas lang yata e. sana ma-extend hane. congrats sa inyo ni onnah. :)

asian horror film showcase at the upfilminstitute will begin by next week, i think. hay don't ask me about the titles. sabi nga ni rhett butler sa GONE WITH THE WIND "frankly my dear, i don't give a damn." i hate horror films, especially asian ones. kahit local. i hate the genre. bakit ba.

"I am wrapping up my shoot for my third digital video movie titled 'Bilog/Circles.' Naghahanap kami ng non-linear editor or edit supervisor na willing magvolunteer, or anyone who has a lot of time and wants to learn adobe premiere or avid."

o, go na. film grad din yan, older sa 'kin. :P

bumMer. waLa lang. bUmmer...

mukhang may isisingko ako. you know, i think kids these days are deep-down conservative and they can't handle too much freedom. i mean, they can't really handle freedom. and they seem to be deviod of sexuality. i don't know why. di ko naman nilalahat pero comparison yan ng mga friends kong teacher na ring matagal-tagal sa peyups at sa iba pang iskul. well, at least wala pa akong student na binili ng island ng magulang niya for his birthday tulad ni popa hehehe. arrreneow kasi e... rich sila.

hay i'm bitchin'. don't mind me.

pero one thing's for sure: they don't know how to handle freedom. i gave them too much. i think i have to take it back next time. a handful of them didn't give anthing in return kasi e. what i really hate about students is the fact that they let laziness rule over their intelligence. sayang. yng ganun siguro ang dapat isingko ano, na alam nilang matalino naman sila pero they don't comply. iba ang rebel sa non-conformist sa plain old pasaway lang kasi, dearies. pasaway lang kasi yung iba eh. tamad pa. hay...

kamusta na guro? tangina ang galing ni omeng when he made that poem. that's rommel rodriguez for you guys. naging titser din ng iba kong student na nag-CAL subjects.

galing sa kanyang KONTRAPUNTAL na cdbook na nilathala ng akdang_bayan lit org.

GURO

as for the sexuality part, ewan ko. parang they are afraid to talk about sex and sexuality, erotica and porn. e kami kaya noon hindi ganyan! naghahanap pa kami ng "exposure trip" kuno sa mga seedy places etc. tapos lahat talaga pinanonood namin, IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES, SALO, what have you, na encouragement din naman ng titsers namin. ewan. altho i know they're having sex na (at least some of them), parang wala pa ring sexuality na nakikita sa katawan nila minsan, o mukha, lalo na sa gawa. in short, walang libog. ba't kaya? samin kasi, sobra sobra, even if most of us were freaking virgins. virginity had nothing to do with sexuality anyway in those days. i wonder now. parang di ganun. weird. ewan.

*

parang gusto kong mag-hibernate muna. i don't know why. the deluge of people this sem is overwhelming me. need to go to the beach man. good thing i bumped into roda the galera girl last week at penguin. gave some details and we're off! but not so soon. dami gagawin sa oct pa eh. aarrrrggggggggghhhhhhhh!

*

what's with friendster? nalilito na ko sa kanya! kung anu-ano nagpa-pop. syempre naki-click ko yung mga nasa ibabaw, minsan by accident. tulad nung update friends eklat, may mga nag-update ng photos, profiles etc. so ako si gaga tinignan ko naman mga changes until i thought, "bakit ko ba tinitigan ini?" tapos yung sandamakmak na bulletin spams pa rin ng exclusives tapos meron pang "who's viewed me?" eklat na pag klik ko e wala namang trace kahit sabi nya i've been viewed 12 times since october eklat. nubaaaaaaaaah. clutter! ang chaks na niya yoko na tuloy open yan ever.

*

need to gym myself heheh. my gymfreak friends, as i recently found out, froze their fitness first accounts. hehe. thanks for all the "trial days" guys hehe. sabi na nga ba e, aayaw din later e. too good to be true. hehe :P

actually ff is just so freaking big for a gym. yung dati ko naman, better bodies, seems so... i dunno, small na nagkakaubusan ng space pero parang wala ka ring anonymity. ang hirap talaga maghanap ng gym in between that. well. anyway, i'm enjoying my long walks in peyups lately so i think i'll stay with that habang di pa ko nakaka-enrol sa boxing ulit, this time sa ateneo naman. have to find that gym first.

well, first things first. academic mode muna drama ko. saka na ulit ang fitness buff. pero punyeta i miss the bellydancing lessons!!!! at least naka-isang taon din kami dun ano. sayang. nasa hkdisneyland na kasi ang titser. ano kaya job niya dun? hm, siguro siya si esmeralda o jasmine hehe.

*

ngek, BETTER LUCK TOMORROW is showing in cinemanila. haha e napapanood ko na kaya yan sa klase ko. i have the dvd :P. laos kayo.

speaking of fil-am films, saw HOOK last week on cinemax and it's cute to see fil-am dante basco hamming it up for spielberg there. pero parang di siya nag-age since then until mapanood ko siya sa THE DEBUT (or in short, my big fat filipino debut party). scary. pero mas naging ham siya dito sa DEBUT. well.

my sister's new dog in the US...

first name cody. last name...pendent? hihihihi :P

chihuahua sya. californian cody d chihuahua chuchu.

yah, we're puppy people talaga pero lately, parang pussy person na ako eh. er, i didn't mean that in the lewd sense heheheheh. :P super close na kami ni bast, my female kinda-kittie na kapatid ni logan, the one who died. bast is my next favorite among the... litter baga ang tawag sa group of kets? pero type ko ng ket na blue-eyed at black. hm, san kaya makapulot nun? mas kyut kung kuting muna sila. what i like about kitties is their inorn ability to toilet-train themselves. naghukay ako sa lawn ko ng iba't ibang butas para gawing compost pit pero ayus, ginawang kubeta ng mga nyeta. at tinabunan! pero at least clean sila devah. namamangha ako sa fact na ito super.

tanga of the day and other highlights

TOTD: i reuse absolute vodka bottles as water bottles. when i saw my half-filled kurant bottle on the counter top this morning, i automatically swiped it and filled it up with mineral water (habit of mine to fill up empty water bottles and timba). when i was filling it up, a familiar strong smell emanated from the bottle. tapos when i opened the ref, lo and behold -- there is a kurant water bottle there, already filled. nyaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. took a swig of the one i just filled and punyeta, ito pala yung may vodka pa! bat kasi di ko agad sinoli sa liquor cabinet last night after mixing cranberry kurant. argh. pero parang di pa agad humalo, i poured it out at nagtira ng half. ayun, andun pa nga, pero may kasama nang konting tubig. aaaaaaahhhhhhhh!

toingk! *hits head with some metallic object*

in happier news, isha's album launch at the podium went well, except that there was no album. kumanta lang sya ng one set and a handful of encores (wah no tori! new wave mode ang lola tonight). pero hahabol daw this week sa record stores. laos! gusto ko sana tonight para may signing eklat. oh well.

laki na ng baby boy nya, gwapo! hubby quebs got everything in video. bumped into other friends there as well. buti na lang di umulan. sa outdoor kasi, part of the candid international jazz festival ini pala. mishka plays on friday. kala ko asa london ang lola?

the songs are nice. mas marami yatang tagalog this time than the previous album. mas keri. saka mukhang mas diretso ang thoughts/words. better-er.

and 'ika nga ng indigo girls sa 10,000 curfews "and that was the beginning...of the rest of my life."

bow.

i just wonder, no, kung fine arts ang tinapos ko nga. nasan na kaya ako ngayon? just a thought... if i opened door number one, where would i be now? i'm at door number two now. door number three sana was the chance to have a second bachelor's degree in this college in toronto where the specialty is cgi kasi the sfx of JURASSIC PARK were all invented, designed and made there. siguro mas mayaman ako ngayon, pero sino kaya ako? interesting malaman, no?

wala lang.

for my students: o, naghahanap yung friend kong si khavn (pronounced as "khan") dela cruz ng volunteers. epal kayo dun if you like.

Khavn is looking for Volunteer Editors for his recently shot full-length films. The editing of these no-budget features should be done by mid-October, in time for upcoming international film-festival deadlines. Editing assistants are also welcome. All interested can contact: oracafe@rocketmail.com, 0917-8394676, or 0917-8211093.

wow gusto ko nitiiiich! one hundred dollar laptop! yes, with free/open source software+a philantropist, it's possible.

Lifeform Intended for Battle and Accurate Yelling

i like my own self-acronym better. i thought of that when i was in high school. it was a hobby of mine to create meanings for my friends's names as if they were acronyms. my best friend reacted when i made hers as : cats and rats love ants. she said she must look like an animal siguro for me to think of that hehe. pece, carl. :) i revised that but i can't remember it at the moment.

*

ei my good friend isha is launching her second album tomorrow. details here.

congrats peach! :) and alam mo, if you pass by film dept, you'll be knows as "mrs. quebs." :)
