Loose ends

Taking a break from work (yes, I freelance, too, so hence, there's no such thing as a real weekend so whatevs) and looking at what the stars have to say about today gave me some kind of thoughts to ponder on.

My Cancer side is the one kicking the reality check thing lately.

Sunday, Sep 30th, 2012 -- You may feel as if your world isn't able to contain you now because you're ready to shed anything that holds you back. Just as a snake outgrows its skin, you, too, have moved beyond your teacher, job or relationship that brought you this far. However, you can't escape before tying up loose ends. Give yourself a break and let your greater ambitions slide for a couple of days while you gain the closure you need.

 
What a reminder. This whole year has already been a year of tying up loose ends -- or at least trying to. In fact, I so want to tie up these ends so bad around the necks of some loose people in the last two years hehe. But yeah, do you know how it feels to move and function in autopilot mode? I know you do.

This is the reason I already want to fly. Maybe this trajectory I embarked on seven years ago is not working anymore. And my soul could feel it, even if my logic is trying its best to fight it. But I guess all it takes is a major "gentle push" to make things happen faster, clearer. Well, what better swift kicker could you possibly have than love?

Call it weird or crazy but I've often rearranged my life cycles to accommodate the whims of the one I love. But as I grew older, I also began to train myself what to accommodate and not to accommodate, especially since I've been meeting women who were initially great to invest in, only to find out that they'll run you to the ground emotionally bankrupt. Never again. 

But this two-year autopilot thing is just too much already. My soul has been yearning to fly, and even if my best of the best BFFs have been trying to convince and help me, I don't know why I could never get up and just grab it and do it. Like I said, kick in the butt is more effective, methinks, and that I got this year. 

To tell you the truth, I think this is also a major reason why she came to my life at the time that she did. The universe wants me to hurry up with tying up those fucking loose ends, before I lose it. And the universe also has this knack of sending people your way that will make you move, or that will matter. Yes, she matters, a lot, to me, and she's making me move. And I like it, very much. 

I just wish that this year would rush itself away already; can't wait to get to the next chapters. And then, let's see where life takes me -- hopefully with her. 

Countdown to just a few more months. Will blink the time off.

Indeed, it feels like it. Perhaps it's because of the tall glass of homemade iced coffee I just had, that momentary peek I got of my girlfriend on choppy Skype earlier, or perhaps the excess two hours of sleep I got today (coming from an early semi-crash last night thanks to almost half a liter of watered down supermarket mix lime mojito), or whatever else that worked prior to the second I am typing this. But indeed, life feels good, hopeful and somewhat sunny, mimicking the weather we are having right outside my window here in the eastern part of Metro Manila.

The stars are also cooperating with their thoughts. Yes, I know these are not fool-proof messages from the universe but they are still nice to look at once in a while. Today's general readings said:

Yes, roadblocks. I've long identified them, where they're coming from, and why the people around me, especially those I never expected to act that way, throw these blocks along my way when, ever since I've been loyal a friend to them, all I ever did was remove blocks from their own paths in order for them to move on smoothly. But I guess that's over now. And last Saturday was full of moments that tested me to be stronger inside to mentally hurdle those blocks. Indeed, twas a success. And I could move on. And yes, the focus is on love these days, these weeks, these past few months. Love. It fuels me to move towards newer destinations. And I am liking the journey so far. I just hope she is, too.  
 
And then, ever since my astrologer-artist-prof friend laid out that I have another moon sign ascending eklat churvaloo (forgot what it's called) and that I should also check that out, I always check it na rin as well. Mine's Cancer pala. And my superfriend M actually wasn't surprised to learn of this as she said she sees Cancer traits in me pala, kasi pareho kami ng sister niya. So here's what Cancer said naman:

Breathing room. A friend of hers advised me to give her that. Cancers tend to love fiercely pala, and sometimes that turns to smothering na pala. I don't want my nurturing to be smothering. After all, they say too much of a good thing is bad. I wonder if that is also advisable in love. Is there such a thing as being too sweet or loving too much? Hm, I don't know. But still, regardless of the advise, I will continue to give the kind of affection that I know, supply her with the kind of loving I know. But of course, being tempered to assess the new being being addressed, one should also be careful. Like the reading said, breathing room. We always take life one day at a time, like it says there in my blog motto. That, too, is applicable with love. And other things in life as well. 

The two readings have always been insightful to me, especially coming from this site I've been subscribed to for almost a decade na yata. It's cool. And nice to read naman. And it gives me a few thoughts to ponder on as I go about my day or as I assess my day at the end of it. And comparing these readings with what's happening in my life recently as well, well, they check out pretty well. Yes, sometimes I do think too much. But sometimes, you know, when I think, a lot of emotions also go with that activity. It's just that sometimes, it takes a brave soul to decipher that out, and an even braver one to accept it as such.

I'm glad that I'm surrounded with brave souls in my life right now. They may not be ever-present physically here, or may be located in different parts of the country and the world, but they are still there, and it's comforting to realize that. And for some of them to give me new things to ponder on, showing me that there are indeed many more roads to choose from other than the path I've been traversing of late, then it makes me really hopeful that there is life beyond where I am now. And I thank the universe for giving me all these clues, all these conversations, all these moments, all these feelings, and of course all these people.

So yes, life is short. Let's be vibrant.

Sunday, Dec 11th, 2011 -- You could feel stuck behind a wall of worry as you hold on to old beliefs that aren't relevant to your current situation. Plans have been changing on a daily basis, but I'm glad some things just pop out of nowhere and just shake up my world in more ways than one. The only catch is, sometimes di yata kinakaya ng powers ko, all that shaking and shoving and shriveling. Man I need strength! Of the emotional kind! But yes, getting there, getting there. As a good friend pointed it out to me, "You're not depressed; you're just very sad." Hm may difference pala? Hahaha now I know! But yes, kidding aside, that really is good to know. Oh well.

It's really good to get in touch with people that care. I sometimes tend to focus on certain individuals that I seem to neglect others around me, other people who actually turn out to care more for me than those fuckers I've been focusing on pala, for so long. Life lesson learned the hard way there, and I'm glad the universe is kicking in to help me on that one. So I am thankful indeed.

So linking lang ang kailangan and then some more uploading. But it's also good that Youtube also jazzed up their design so it really looks like a sleek pang-demo reel type of site na for me. I think 2012 is promising to be a better year for me, this early. There are signs and yes, brass rings that, if I don't grab, I might regret missing them. We'll see. And yes, sometimes, there are neglected things I need to pick up again, forgotten projects that need to be revived, ignored personas yearning to be involved again. Yes, I am listening, fueling, rewiring, reprogramming things to accommodate all of them. As in ALL. No kidding.

I also have to remind myself never to repeat what mistakes I committed this past year. Lovable ones notwithstanding, and regrettable ones that need not be repaired.

buti na lang hindi ako psycholo. ibang tao lang hahahahahaha! and yet again, they have been banding/bonding together.

but wait! there's more!

they've been spreading chismis pala about me, and about some friends of mine, and about me and some friends of mine! yes, threefold. ang pathetic, i know. ano na nga ba yung kasabihang "great people talk about ideas. mediocre people talk about other people." you know where you are. i know where i am.


one year hence, and people cannot move on -- or maybe don't want to. sad.

if you want the real score, talk to me. if not, then remain in your illusions. okay lang. hindi naman ako ang pinagtatawanan ng mga taong pinagkukuwentuhan niyo ng mga illusions niyo e. kayo. sobrang kayo. oh em gee, you have no freaking idea!!!

My 25 Random Things:

1. i can spend hours in front of a computer. obvious ba facebook friends haller! heheh. whether online or off, maraming laman ang computer ko na puwedeng pagkaabalahan, lalo na ngayon! woot!

2. i can write better when i'm beside/in front of a window at may natatanaw na langit at lupa/greenery/scenery kahit gaano katiting. ewan ko kung bakit. hey, it works.

3. i love computer games, pero hindi yung mga masyadong bombastic type na rpg o multi-player chenelyns. wala ako actually tyaga sa ganoon kadetalyeng laro. although ironic, i love citybuilding games, the ones with missions and some kinda aliw graphics, like what impressions games-sierra used to do, with greek civilization/egyptian civ/middle chinese civ games. ay te sinisikatan ako ng araw at nilulubugan kakalaro ng city hehe.

4. i love playing trivia games. trivial pursuit, jeopardy, mga ganun, quiz show types. ewan lang. i am a geek like that. kaya sa timezone, makikita mo kong kinakarir ang super trivia games doon to win the jackpot tickets hehe. hey, nakakulimbat na ko ng enough tix to exchange for a stuff toy. odibah!

5. i don't like dozing off when traveling. i like to look out the window at the scenery kasi, sometimes taking photos, thanks to digicam technology. kahit gabi ang travel. in fact, mas gusto ko yun kasi i love looking at the night lights, see how humans could get creative (or not) in lighting up the dark night. hence, i like looking at neon signs, lighted signs, light fixtures, etc. sometimes i take pictures of these, plus any kind of lighting fixture that interests me. i have lots of photos of these na actually. yes, even during SLR days, in film, on photo paper!

6. i don't get bored. ever. kahit nakatunganga lang ako sa tabi waiting for whatever, kahit sa tingin mo e nabo-bore na ako, hindi ati. ewan kung bakit. i have this knack of entertaining myself with thoughts using things around me as inspiration. pramis. and of course laging muni-muni mode ang moda ng utak ko e. kahit ayaw ko na minsan.

7. i have a bookmark collection. informal naman ito, hindi yung tipong ilalagay ko sa clear plastic folderbook chenes para maprotektahan. wala, andiyan lang sila sa bottom shelf sa library ko.

8. i collect notebooks, the paper type. kaya pag nagta-travel, ito ang binibili ko sa iba't ibang parts ng earth para iuwi. eto ang nakakahon at nakatago para di alikabukin. kolekta lang, parang ayaw kong sulatan. but if i do, eventually, ginagawa ko silang journals.

9. i am a very patient person when dealing with people who want to learn something genuinely,

without just testing you/your knowledge or taunting you or mocking you. i guess that's why i went into teaching. and still surviving. for now.

10. i have little patience (or no sympathy at all) for arrogant people, people who think they already know everything hence you can't contribute something new to their (supposedly existing) body of knowledge, and people who think they know better about anything, even if you actually know better about something they think they know better than you. nalito ka na? hahahahahaha!

11. i have strange reading requirements. i read novels better during long trips, before going to bed, or chilling somewhere while waiting for something or just lounging around, like in a beach. i can't read short stories and creative nonfiction books the same way -- dapat ito sa sofa sa sala o sa couch sa library ko. academic readings i can only read while in a study table of sorts, preferably my dining table; i can't read them anywhere else. and i can't read anything academic or literary in my office. even if i tried. oh, and i read comics better in the john heheh. don't ask why. i don't know. it's just like that.

12. i take pictures of food, preferably close-ups. i like shooting anything in close-ups, actually. strange zooming to detail kumbaga. kaya i just love the macro lens i had before with my SLR. too bad my slr conked out na. :( i miss shooting on film, actually. iba pa rin ang richer image quality ng film granules over digital pixels. e-ver.

13. inggit ako sa mga taong may prubinsiya, the type na may dapat uuwian sila kapag holidays type, you know. unlike me na manila-born and bred na, kahit may province ang grandparents, wala na kasing roots doon to go back to that regularly e.

maybe that's why i like traveling out of manila, kahit saan. which brings me to...

14. i love traveling. if i could make a career out of it, i would. alas, i don't think i can. the taurus in me most times look for some place to root myself to e. e ganun eh. ewan.

15. i love eating grilled/barbecued stuff. anything, lalo na hayup heheh. sorry vegan friends, di ko talaga kaya isuko e. but i tried! semi-vegan dati, 2006, 6 months. it worked! but man, i miss my momma's mean medium rare steaks and her superb tinumis dish (nueva ecijan version of dinuguan - not that bloody and not masabaw) yum... so sorry. :P

16. i'm a purist when it comes to movies. i really like to watch them inside a moviehouse, not in front of a tv or even a projector-on-the-wall set-up. basta. may ganun.

17. everything i learned in dealing with people (PR, showbiz, plastikan, cautious, baragan, sindakan, suyuan, etc.) i learned in ma'm malou de guzman's acting class in college. man, it works, i tell you. take it from me, a former introvert from age 3-19. do i look introverted to you nowwwww???? heheh. :P

18. if given the chance, i would have wanted to dance professionally, as in for a living, o basta nagto-tour at nagpe-perform ng dances chenelyn, parang troupe or part of a musical stage play or some kind of dance group na naiimbitahan sa shows (puwera sa master showman ha hehe :P may tulugan ang nais ko). you know what i mean. as in, dig ko sanang mag-ballet at jazz when i was still young enough for that. alas, pop dancing in high school and some hiphop classes post-college lang ang na-keri ng lola mong gawin. plus of course disco dancing stuff. ganun.

19. if given the chance din, i would have wanted to do more sports pa sana when i was small. alas, di kineri ng lungs ko dahil hikain ako noon, so laging bench ang byuti ko, or excused because. luz! i would really have wanted to excel in martial arts, actually. kaya uber-dig ko ang arnis lessons namin dati nina fire (ehehehe, hint hint). i also wanted to play baseball since i was in high school. luz ang school namin, walang matinong sports program e. kaya ayan, nagbasa na lang ako ng nagbasa ng libro. at naging writer. nubah. laki tuloy pwet ko.

20. i prefer drinking chocolate milk than plain white milk.

21. i like sampling different cuisines. kahit cuisines within cuisines bet rin. street food lalo na. street food all over the world. syempre pipiktyuran ko rin sila.

22. i must have really been a gypsy in a past life (lives). ilang "readers" na ang nakakita nito e. gypsy na nomad na tumatawid somewhere in the Mediterranean areas of the world, na may elements ng things i like like violin (frustrated instrument to learn), greek / mediterranean / persian food (esp lamb! lamb dishes! i heart lamb), red wine, india, some egyptian things, greek mythology, and bellydancing.

therefore, i prefer couscous over rice. mas madali siyang lutuin actually. di ko pa naman itatakwil ang pagka-asian ko tho. i still like some dishes with rice. can you imagine adobo with couscous? luz.

23. in college, i used to eat carrots and drink orange juice for breakfast. i am not a big breakfast fan -- until nag-film production work na ako at naging necessity siya sa life. nowadays, hindi na ulit. but i like taking brunches.

24. i used to like wearing grey shirts. ngayon, pang-workout na lang sila. but before it was hip to wear black or all-black, i already preferred wearing black clothes. panahon pa na di pa pinapanganak ang mga "emo kids," before the "goth" label was also introduced.

25. i prefer writing in a white-text-on-black-background mode. hindi kasi ako nasisilaw sa ganito. ganito ang settings ng lahat ng computer ko. kaya aakalain mong nagco-code ako o parang may ginagawang techie stuff sa computer pero nagsusulat lang naman ako sa msword o openofc. at kapag naki-type ka sa computer ko, mapapagod mata mo kung di ka sanay sa ganito hehe. sorry.

The Year of the Earth Ox evokes stability and dependability. The Ox is a practical work animal, while the Earth element is steady and firm. Together, they create a kind of plodding energy that can be exasperating. Still, progress will be made in 2009; it will occur in slow, barely perceptible increments. If you stay patient and keep your nose to the grindstone, you will make the most of this ponderous energy.

Oxen place great emphasis on authority and tradition. Therefore, 2009 will lay an especially heavy burden on world leaders. Government officials, CEOs and community organizers will be expected to correct society's ills. If they slack off, they'll be thrown by the wayside. Substance is always favored over style in the Year of the Ox.

Money in the Year of the Ox

2009 promises to be a time of financial restraint, too. The Earth element places great emphasis on the material plane. Saving will be more important than spending. Everyone will be tightening their belts -- even those who are flush with cash. Businesses that work to keep their clients, present materials in a timely manner and provide excellent customer service will survive, while companies that take an indifferent approach to their clientele will fall to ruin. There's no room for slackers in an Ox year, especially as far as commerce is concerned.

Practical tradesmen like plumbers, electricians, carpenters and mechanics may do especially well this year, because the Earth Ox prizes foundations. Anyone involved in strengthening and improving foundations is sure to profit in 2009. Love in the Year of the Ox

With regard to romance, the Year of the Earth Ox is time to get serious. The Ox doesn't favor careless flings -- remember, this animal favors work over play. In fact, playing fast and loose with somebody's heart could get in you in deep trouble. This is a fabulous year to get engaged or married, provided you're with someone you love. If you're not ready to make a commitment to a casual love interest, you're better off breaking up. Hold out for real thing -- a relationship that will withstand poverty, illness and any other challenges that lie ahead.

Fashions will be more subdued this year; darker colors, durable fabrics and sturdy shoes will be the norm. This will be in keeping with the somber, serious energy of the Earth Ox. As far as travel is concerned, opt for beautiful nature spots as opposed to crowded urban areas. Being in the presence of trees, mountains and lakes can be tremendously relaxing in 2009. the last time we had an ox year was 1997, and that was indeed an unforgettable year for me. i was 24, working in showbiz, and about to make two huge transitions in my life -- leaving showbiz for the literary world, and leaving heterosexuality.

a scriptwriter friend clipped this news item in a newspaper about some call for manuscripts for a UP National Writers Workshop thingie. i had no idea what that meant, but seeing that that entailed staying in baguio for two whole weeks for free with a stipend attracted me to it. so since the workshop didn't accept screenplays -- and i was that, a scriptwriter -- i thought of collecting some poetry i wrote over the years, since poetry was accepted.

to ensure that i had higher chances of getting in, i also submitted two short stories in filipino. the first one was easy -- i just turned to my short script vault and transformed my original undergraduate thesis script into a short story. that was SI TOTOY SA GUBAT NG DIWATA, an environmental film about and for children. for the second story, i had a hard time. but one night, as i was about to sleep, an idea came to me, and i grabbed my pen and paper and immediately scribbled it down. it was about a woman who committed suicide, and was talking to her best friend about her habilins as a ghost na. but on second reading, i decided to make it postmodern--even before learning what the heck postmodernism meant--by making it sound as if the woman was talking to someone but in reality, she was talking to herself. the image i had in my head was that of someone playing chess with herself, while all along, she is watching the chess game between herself and herself. get it? this visual was somehow inspired by the music video of alanis morissette for IRONIC where she is the driver and the three other passengers in the car are also her. parang ganun. youtube it if you don't know what i'm talking about.

so anyway, that short story became SI JOE COOL KASI, and my second entry to the workshop in baguio. needless to say, yes, i got in. they loved the stories, and i met really good writer friends in the workshop which i still treat as friends to this very day. that was march to april, i think. 1997.

and later that year, september to be exact, those two stories won for me my two palanca awards. both third place. and that gave me the courage to continue on with creative writing. the following year, i resigned from my office and applied for a masters degree in creative writing.

and yeah, about heterosexuality. i came into that baguio workshop a heterosexual, and came out a homosexual. and, like the indigo girls said, that was the beginning of the rest of my life! chos.

so now, here we are.

totoo for me ang sinabi ni jeanette winterson: what you risk reveals what you value. and those two things i risked in my life to attain -- creative writing and lesbianism -- are now the two things i value the most in my life. so happy ito.

sabi nga sa taas, tiyaga, slow and steady, building strong foundations, and reaping the rewards later on. bet lang. patience is a virtue kumbaga. at eto na nga yun.

yes, she had me at HEAVENLY CREATURES (with uber-director peter jackson of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy -- and this is a lesbian-themed film ha!). and okay, i permitted her to be in TITANIC (without her, ultimate fail in cheeziness ang film na yun) with leo dicaprio. pero by the time she made ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, break na kami heheh. :P

happiness! magaling na aktres like her deserve to win. except, i cannot quite fathom what the news wires insinuated with this passage...
