connectivity

amazing talaga ng power ng technology na ito, internet. sarap for research work. grabeh. loads of info talaga at your fingertips, literal. times like these naiisip ko talagang ICT4ME ang adbokasya ko hehe. dedma na sa tumutuligsa sa mga ict4d eks. it works for me, man.

been doing research on four topics (oo grabeh multi-tasker talaga akesh) simultaneously the whole day. productive naman. weird lang yung opac ng peyups. yung libro on literature, nasa masscomm lib. yung book on film and feminism, nasa cswcd lib. nubayan. wafung.

abah interesting lately ang mga blog comments ko ha. ei, you can email this blogsterkid at my newly created blog email, leaflens@gmail.com. kung nahihiya kayong mag-comment dito. sa email tayo maghuntahan. dedma na sa spammers. magaling ang gmail mag-filter eh hehe.

i stumbled upon this queer encyclopedia site and it's so great. however, as i was browsing their mainpage, may obits list sa gilid, mga notable queers na kamamatay lang plus description and background.

grabe lang yung napansin ko. puro "survived by her partner of thirty-three years" o kaya "survived by her partner of fifty years." ponyetah ang tatagal namang nagsama ng mga byaning na ito.

this gets me thinking again. parang afraid yung thought. i think the hopeless/hapless romantic in me died already because i can say these things now, pero i don't think i'm comfy with settling down with one person for that long! 30 years? 20? not even 10. parang i dread the thought. i really wonder why. pero i just do. siguro na-reinvent ko na nga ang outlook in life ko and  i really don't like the idea of depending on one person for that long. i'd rather be alone actually. or kung may kasama man, siguro hindi na kami aabot ng senior citizen status. at least ako, parang ayokong umabot ng ganun. ewan ko. baka naloloka lang ako or what, pero the thought of growing old scares me na nga, growing old with one person pa.  hm, siguro subliminally, alam ko kasing if i grow old with someone, i will be the one who will do most of the "caregiving" chores (based on my herstory).  parang di ko ata dig yun. i'd rather give care to myself. selifsh ba? ewan ko. basta weird lang ito sa akin. the concept of 'til death do us part.' ick.

not to say na i don't advocate for lgbt marriage. i do. we all have the right to enjoy civil liberties no matter who we are. siguro yun bang thought na you depend on one person for your happiness, sanity, eklat, chuvalulu, mga kantang "how do i live without you" chorva ang anthem. mukhang i'm rebelling on that. short of promoting polygamy na ba ito? hindi naman siguro. i still believe we shouldn't spread ourselves thinly like that, keeping multiple (steady) partners and all. taxing talaga yun at mga matatapang (at may datung) na tao lang ang may kaya nun. i'm not like that, i know. hm, maybe if i turn into a billionaire tomorrw, huway nat? hehe. kidding.

basta. yes, it's so sweet and so romantic, being with "the one" eklat. pero frankly, i don't think there is just one for you.  people never get satisfied; that's a fact. parang tattoo yan e. do you wanna get stuck with one design forever? masyadong mahal magpa-remove nun kaya you have to think hard about the design or if you really want one. kaya nga i settle for henna kasi ako, nagsasawa ako sa design. at least henna puwede mo ilipat lipat. you cherish the first half na malinaw pa siya. and then you just try to move on pag fading na.

henna tattoo and love. what an analogy.

well, i guess nasasabi ko na kasi ito dahil nakaka-ilang relasyon na rin naman akong matagal. as in, serial monogamy type, for as short as 3 months to as long as 5 years. so i guess i learn some things from those times. and the thing that i've learned is, hindi dapat tayo nagpapatali sa length of time. if it's  time to move on, we should do it.  saka it's nice to be alone sometimes. i'm valuing that now. hindi talaga natatapos ang saga ng pagkilala sa sarili, kaya kelangang di ito kaligtaan ninuman.

well, to each her own. violent reactions welcome. e me.

ps nood kayo nitong film.

The Seven Deadly Sins Quiz on 4degreez.com

heeheeehee. kala ko gluttony ang una ko. especially after super-super-stuffing myself with the most delicious lamb and roast beef i tasted in my life last night.  grabeh the australians really have a knack for tasty treats. yummy. but their wine still sucks a bit. sayang, dapat nag-beer ako. baka better sila sa beer.

australian day kahapon. upfi representation kami as usual. sayang at nagsabay siya sa indian day. mas colorful sana yun. next year.

kala ko nagsawa na ko kakapunta sa mga ganitong embassy day functions, di pa pala. not when they can serve more delicious food every year. saka it's always nice to observe people who attend these functions. alam mo naman ako, people-watcher.  interesting indeed.

sabagay, depende nga sa emba yun. dati kasi, we always had a steady invite during bastille day, france's national holiday. i go there for the wine and cheeses. food minsan. but the peeps there are really sooooo...  soooo... basta i don't like going to french thingies anymore. as much as possible. if i can help it. spanish pa keri. i like looking at the large paella lutuan there. kakaiba. :)

daze of being whiled

i hate it when it rains. especially when i'm outside or when i need to go out.  may bagyo ba?

prang gusto ko na lang mag-stay sa bahay at magmukmok kasama ang sandamakmak na gamit, gadget at isipin.

hay, hirap 'pag lutang ka... sobra.

the only good thing about the rain is that it gives additional texture to lighting design by wetting the streets. wet streets absorb more light and it doesn't make your film look dull. notice how night scenes in most hollywood movies have wet streets, na parang kakaulan lang o sinadya nilang paulanin ng konti tapos wala na para wet ang street. that is actually for cinematographic purposes. i learned that from an american cinematographer eons ago when i was still young and wanted to be a cinematographer myself.

comme ca

eto, hindi ko binasa ang kalye. kakatapos lang umulan at nasa isang establishment ako sa the fort yata ito (can't remember; the night was forgettable). good thing i was outside in the overlooking area and had my camera then kaya may-i-shoot ko itong flyover na itich. the speeding car reminded me of the delorean in BACK TO THE THE FUTURE. kyut.

anyway, stay dry, folks. will try to do the same.

read muna review ko ng UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION here.

wala lang. it's just amazing to discover what kinds of things happen within the vicinity of your birth date during different eras in different countries.

here is what happened in portugal:

The Carnation Revolution (Portuguese, Revolução dos Cravos) was an almost bloodless, left-leaning, military-led revolution started on April 25, 1974, in Lisbon, Portugal, that effectively changed the Portuguese regime from an authoritarian dictatorship to a liberal democracy after a two-year process of a Left-wing semi-military administration. Although government forces killed four people before surrendering, the revolution was unusual in that the revolutionaries did not use direct violence to achieve their goals. The population, holding red carnations, convinced the regime soldiers not to resist. The soldiers readily swapped their bullets for flowers. It was the end of the Estado Novo, the longest authoritarian regime in Western Europe (but not the last to fall).

kewl, eh? check it out on wikipedia.

hehe wala lang. i'm procrastinating, as usual. but it's good that when i procrastinate, i blog. still writing, devah?

hansaya lang super nung kickoff party ng first international jazz and arts fest sa podium last friday hehe. libre eh! there's this band who opened doing electrosamba, nyko maka (sp?). eh more like mejochaka.  haha taray ko. the electronica stuff saved 'em.

then the kool kats swinging eklat (yeah, komplete with the pomada hairstyle and retro joutfit na parang niluwa sila ng tin pan alley time) called brass monkeys played. nakakasawa pala pakinggan ang all-male band pag matagal hane? all-male swingjazzband. or that's just me. then this sirocco world music band from australia came, complete with an aboriginal dancer ek. eh parang "white man music with black man culture display" ang dating pero katuwa lang ang aborigine na yun ha when he danced. sana sya na lang ever, naalibadbadaran ako sa white dudes. colonisadores! hehe.

then the happy happy rio-inspired !carnavale! number followed. hansayasayasaya lang manood nun! the beat, the songs, the dance, the shaking booties, the colors! i swear, the next time i get down and depressed and hopeless and brokenhearted all at the same time, i will up and leave and head for brazil!!! like instantly! without looking back!  baka doon ko makita lahat ng hinahanap ko sa buhay. naunahan na nga ko ng isang kaibigan sa latin-am adventure na yun eh. i was trying to connect with a former colleague about something and when he answered me via email, he said he was already in argentina making a living as a waiter! shucks inggit ako! parang ang sarap lang na experience nun. parang yung former editor na kilala ko who backpacked in europe and ended up as a waiter in france to earn a living for 2 months. shet stuff that writers' dreams are made off.

I WANNA TRAVELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL agen.

and then of course our own beloved world music fusion group pinikpikan capped the night. it was sheer fun when they play. parang nung saturday gig nila sa bistro. i love watching them live because they're the only band who can turn the house (as in, inuman house) into a dance party. as in literal, tumatayo lahat para sumayaw. dapat sa gig places na may dancefloor na legit sila tumugtug eh para ayos at walang nababanggang lamesa o monitor. hansayasaya. eh lam nyo naman ang lola nyo, mahilig sumayaw ini. ayaw nga maniwala nina mam gigi whenever we always end up at savarin with dinner guests. eh sila lounge singing ang trip. sabi ko nga, i betray my last name; i should have been named "bailar" instead of "cantor" dapat. sa totoo lang.

well sya sige sa uulitin.

all part of the business

if you can tell me where that quote came from, i will kiss you hehehe. ching!

share ko lang ang isang kalokahan ngayong hapon. as in, kanina lang. grabeh. kelangan ko lang i-unload.

this is in the form of an email to my co-workers.

thank goodness i subsribe to meditative buddhist thought. kundi... ox and taurus will emerge.

just to give you an update of sorts.

it's 1.13pm as i write this on a monday and behn cervantes just stormed out.

he came here looking for (our boss) and was saying na he talked already to someone ek ek about what he wants from us.

(our research assistant)  referred him to me since (our boss) is out. the first thing he asked was, how old am i.

tapos he went on to tell me about this first american actress in the phil during the 50s who is here on a sentimental visit to the phil and he thinks masscomm should take advantage of this. she's leaving for iloilo next week and whatever forum he wants should be this week daw.

sabi ko, baka hindi ganon kabilis ma-arrange kung this week na kasi kelangan pang mag-gather ng maraming tao and create publicity for it para di naman sayang.

sabi niya "well, if you're seeing it as a problem! it's a problem! everything is a problem!"

sabi ko hindi naman sa ganun pero gusto lang natin i-maximize ang event just in case.

and then i asked him kung kailan kaya babalik yung actress from iloilo and he said something like, "she's not coming back! okay, if that's how you see it! (calling his alalay) come on, let's go!" and left huffing and puffing.

there you go.

it's people like him that makes me thankful that i am not in showbiz anymore.

to quote jim morrison, people are strange.

comments are welcome.

astrological advice

some people might pooh-pooh the astrological zodiac descriptions and prescriptions of individuals' signs, but i don't. in fact, it's a good reminder that bigger things work around you and over you especially whenever one is so overwhelmed and preoccupied only with the things that work within him/herself.

and to quote a friend, sabi niya matagal na nga namang inoobserbahan ang mga planetary motions eklavu na yan sa astrology so it must have some sort of bearing in our lives as humans.

mizmoh. di ba bles? :)

kaya i listen to the stars today and here is what they have to say:

Relationships have shown you a path toward growth that has pushed you beyond your old comfort zone. It's not time to pull back out of fear, but it is wise now to reassess your destination in light of your current position. Today, it's better to be realistic than idealistic.
The feisty red planet, Mars, symbolizes the direct expression of physical energy. The large gaseous planet, Jupiter, acts in an expansive manner. Today, after weeks of moving slowly toward alignment, they are in exact opposition. We are fired up and ready to go, but our reactions to current circumstances may be overstated. Additionally, with the Moon in proud Leo, we need to be noticed and appreciated. Although potential may truly be greater now than usual, a little self-restraint is still a wise course of action.

it's so true. lalo na talaga today. applicable sa aking life. tama, it's better to be realistic than idealistic, especially in all relationships i have today, lalung-lalo na sa work relationship ko with some people. hay...basta i should just remember millennium resolution numero uno lagi. lagi lagi lagi. intiendes????

new millennium resolutions

hindi na uso ang new year's resolutions. hindi rin naman natin natutupad e. dapat we should think big, think grand. we should think of resolutions that can cover our current lifetime that can also have good bearing in our forthcoming lifetime pa.

hence, i am crafting my NEW MILLENNIUM'S RESOLUTIONS. kung si dalai lama may ethics for a new millennium, ako si dalai libai at may resolutions na susubukang gawing life guide.

new millennium resolution number 1: never ever ever ever work with matapobre rich donyas and dons.  even if they pay you a million pesos.  your dignity and self-worth is worth much much more than that.

new millennium resolution number 2:  no kind of work is more important than your health, so rest.  ganito lang yun: yung perang makukuha sa trabaho, ipang-oospital mo lang kung hindi ka magpahinga.  hindi na uso ang "working to death" na expression honeys.

new millennium resolution number 3:  magbawas kumain ng baboy.  and i mean in any forms.  with exception: kung libre ang kainan at inimbitahan ka, don't offend the inviting party and eat some. saka libre eh. pero yung effort na ikaw ang bibili o magluluto, wit! wa na pig! no mo' pork!

new millennium resolution number 4: drink more water.  para di ma-dehydrate.

new millennium resolution number 5: tune out whenever people around you become unbearably negative.  remember, if you can't change the situation, change how you react towards the situation.

o yun na muna for now. dadagdagan natin yan eventually. any suggestions? mag-comment dyan.

sige fly muna akesh.

“Lesbiyana Lesbiyana Paano ka Isinapelikula?”
A look at women-loving-women portrayals in mainstream Philippine cinema
by Libay Linsangan Cantor

How are women-loving-women being portrayed in Philippine cinema today?

Since the film Tatlo Magkasalo was commercially shown in 1998, the topic of lesbianism as a central storyline was rarely – if barely – touched upon again by Filipino filmmakers within the mainstream field. There have been a few lesbian or bisexual female characters and lesbian-oriented storylines in a few films, but most – if not all – of these portrayals are not of a major stature. What kind of portrayals are these? How do they show the lives, loves and preoccupations of today’s Filipino lesbian? Do they present a range of characterizations or perpetrate stereotypes that lead to derogatory personifications? But before asking where these characters are today, perhaps we need to ask how lesbians were portrayed in Philippine cinema in the past.

This paper will try to examine the image/s of the lesbian in mainstream cinema through an informal survey of commercially-exhibited films within the last three decades. By selecting certain popular examples, the paper will try to comprehend the celluloid life of the woman-loving-woman – how they were given spaces within the story, how their stories were carried out, and how their personas were treated in whole. This analysis of a Philippine cinematic “lesbian herstory” hopes to produce meaningful insights and hopefully also lead us to a more enlightened and empowered filmic representation of the lesbian experience.

Ms. Libay (Olivia) Linsangan Cantor is an instructor at the UP Film Institute where she finished her BA Film and Audiovisual Communication degree in 1995. She also serves as UPFI’s Faculty Coordinator for Academic Programs and Research. Currently, she is finishing her MA English Studies: Creative Writing at the UP College of Arts and Letters.

Ms. Cantor has garnered honors in different fields such as writing (two Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature in 1997; honorable mention at the Film Development Foundation of the Philippines Inc. 1998 scriptwriting competition); photography (“one of the five highly commendable photographers” at the 2005 World Association for Christian Communication International Photographic Competition, UK) and video (“Jeep Tip” short documentary honored as an “Official Selection” at the 2005 Chicago Filipino-American Film Festival, USA).

She was the co-founder of U.P. Sappho Society, the first university-based lesbian organization in the Philippines. She is currently an applicant of the professional literary organization Artista Para sa Kultura at Dalumat ng Bayan Ink. (Akdang_Bayan).

Her short stories, poems, essays, film/media and cultural/gender analyses/criticism articles have been published in different book anthologies, print and online publications in the Philippines, Australia, Canada and the USA.

bite me!

man, not another (somewhat) weirdly-strapped woman in a tight black outfit!  :)  but this one, excited ako. :)

saw the first one years ago and it was interesting. medyo hindi ko alam ang storyline when i bought the dvd pero nagandahan ako kasi i like good/creative vampire storylines, lalo na pag babae ang bida. first time ko atang makanood ng isang kick-ass vampire woman bida.

yan ang tunay na queen of the damned! hehe. you go, girl! love the contact lenses btw.

and yet another one!

er, okay, no gunslings here. swordslings (?) or bowslings (?, nag-iimbento lang ako) puwede na rin. basta may woman in tight dark leathery outfit with gothic-looking weapons, keri na rin. hehe kaya lang hindi talaga siya ang bida. sayang. latinas rule pa naman. :P but michelle rodriguez looks better in the official site. the intensity of that stare, man! i swear! did you see her in GIRLFIGHT? knockout stare.

i actually wanted to play this game dati pa pero feeling ko, di kaya ng computer ko. saka na lang.

i dunno. i really like vampire eklats. at least good ones ha. unlike that freaking tarantino film years ago. vampires kasi are cool creatures -- they're sexy/erotic, dangerous/deadly, and so homoerotic! hehe. naghanap na naman ng kakampi...

ewan, basta. kung may iba dyan feeling nila sirena sila, ako siguro feeling ko vampire ako hehe. chos. look at the hours i keep! saka parang kewl maging immortal. tatambay lang ako forever sa library of alexandria chenelyn at magbabasa ng libro. at manonood ng pelikula. minsan gagawa rin hehe. and will finally learn how to play the violin. tsk. hindi kasi kasya ang isang century sa lahat ng gusto kong gawin eh.

oh, will also try to scare the shit out of our politicians, the real bloodsuckers. dami na namang rate inflation putangna. ipagbili kaya nila yang mga luxury cars nila para mabayaran ang mga punyetang utang ng utilities? bad trip.

sige na nga sleep na.

but do check out mmfe2005 reviews ko here.

and man oh man, how i wish i were the one who wrote this EXODUS review! hilarious grabeh!

it's just funny to note where the filmmakers got the name "King Bagulbul" the villain of that film (horribly played by JayR -- oh sorry, was he acting in that film? i thought he was merely doing action shots for rap album pictorials hehe). bagulbul is a slang term used by PNP Academy cadets/students to refer to complaining in secret. my friend carol bello, having taught there before, used the term as the title of a song she performs with her other band sheelahnagig. nakakailang performances na rin naman sila with that song. unless dwight gaston the writer heard it in PNPA, i'm thinking he or someone who works with him picked it up from these sheelahnagig performances.things that make you go hmmmm...

well, ganyan talaga ang showbiz.

sya, gudnayt.

02 January 2006

and what have you done?

continuing to share my photos lang, this time the xmas lightstuff all around.

for me, this is the best part of xmas -- the lights display. i always like looking at them, kahit mga home-made. sayang lang at di natuloy ang plano ko to roam around the city and take night pictures. mahirap na kasing gawin yun when you don't have a car anymore. kaya kung ano lang ang nasa aking vicinity ang nakuhanan ko. not much, but it was okay na rin.

  peyups xmas

can you see the oblation from here?

quezon hall

e eto, can you see the oblation from here? joke.

vuleklekz

ngayon ko lang napansin ang mga lighted flowers as xmas decor. kelan pa nagsimula yun?

alumni wall

bahay ng alumni hall with the traditional ready-to-buy tivoli light structures

kapuso tree

just whizzing by gma7. okay, so they're not truly imaginative tree-decorators but hey, they're still in top ranking diba? so who cares?

glowstix!

another reason why i love xmas, esp lantern parade time at peyups. i get to buy these stuff. maabaw lang kaligayahan ko; basta may ilaw pa sila, happy na ako hehe.

blustix

saya! akala ko purple ito, nang ilawan ko, bluish. weird.

multicolor

nice no? wala, ako lang yata natutuwa sa glowstix. ah, aside frm those who take ecstacy. iba ang nakikita nila.  hehe.

heniwey, was also tinkering with the design of my other blog, the one i got from dotph for free when i attended the blogging summit last summer. i just got one for the sake of having a .ph address sana and besides, the were offering for free (may bayad kasi pero now, siguro due to popular demand, they have free offerings na aside from the paid ones). kaya lang back then, their designs were rather limited. i wanted something like this here, yung light text on dark background, but their tech/design dudes didn't know how to do that pa. kaya iniwan ko muna.

binalikan ko recently and nadagdagan na ang designs nila, and it somehow approximates what i was looking for, so puwede na ulit. kaya i want to introduce this other site kung saan ko ilalagay ang mga reviews ko, mostly films and books pero anything media-related ida-dump ko na rin doon, para mas pormal. saka para it will live up to its name na maging well-oiled prolific reviews writer ulit ako at hindi ever kalawangin.

check out anti-rust punditry or as i term it, arp-arp.

hapi nu yir everyone. have a safe and orgasmic one. :P
