A review of Dogeaters

yeah i know, i owe myself this review. wala lang. i make it a point to make kinda formal reviews once in a while in order for me to continue on the anti-rust punditry personal exercise of mine.

so here it is.

BARKING UP THE WRONG MEDIUM:
JESSICA HAGEDORN'S "DOGEATERS"

saw this stage play version of fil-am writer jessica hagedorn's bestselling novel last november 2007 when atlantis productions staged it. it was directed by Rent director bobby garcia.

took me quite a while to actually sit down and write this down because...i hated it. i hated it as much as i loved the novel. the novel is one of my top favorite novels of all time, as in super hands down talaga. bow ako sa writing prowess ni jessica dito sa librong ito. when this was assigned to us in a literature back subject sa MA ko, wow man, it blew my mind that someone could think of such a concept and actually put it on paper, and put it there super creatively. yeah i know, it's either you hate it or you love it, pero ako, i super duper love this novel.

which brings us to the play...hay...early on, when i read somewhere na nilapitan nga siya to have this novel tuned into a play, jessica was lost in thinking how -- as in, how do you make it into a stage play? sabi nga niya, mas bet niya kung film, at kung film, parang mas may idea siya kung paano ito ie-execute.

and i agree with the lola, hundred percent. hindi kasi pang-stage material itong material niya. i could also visualize it as a film. wala e, hindi maganda ang translation. medyo patay-patay sa blocking, yung pacing minsan ang daming lull in between scenes, tapos parang puro daldal lang. nawala yung super visual element ng kuwento na sa akin ay iyon ang buhay niya. i could see this as a screen language translation, not stage. hindi siya tumatayo as interesting sa stage.

what sustained my interest lang in this play is the acting. siyempre top caliber ang actors, and the acting was, expectedly, great. i like jon santos' take on the role of that gay owner of the disco club. okay yung shift niya into campy disco drag queen to sensitive pailalim na tibak mode chever. and andoy ranay was just a hoot as imelda marcos grabe. nakakatuwa yung mga nuances niya hihi. super-cute pa rin si jenny jamora ba yun, yung nasa Stop Kiss lesbian play ng new voice dati at saka Women of Malolos ng DUP ba o UP Rep? i forgot na. kewl siya talaga. gina alajar's ever-praying military wife role was just superb, man. swak sa kanya ang role. yun nga lang, parang naghahanap ng camera ang performances nilang lahat, na gusto mong ilawan experimentally, pasabugin mo ang liwanag, i-drain mo hanggang maging gritty grainy, i-frame and reframe mo ang parts nila while moving the cam, i-saturate and desaturate ang color sa postprod, etc. yun yun e -- naghahanap siya ng ibang avenue to demonstrate the point of the whole narrative. at yun nga, mas bagay siyang film kesa stage play. the play was not able to get the dynamism of the multiple parallel storylines, the grittiness of each character's take on the marcos regime (it's about people in seedy maynila during the marcos regime, centering on the family of a fil-am balikbayan and the different characters that are connected in her life), and the criss-crossing of all of these paths.

such was its dynamism nga. kaya nga my book report about this was entitled "when dali met flaherty" or something like that, meaning the text talks about situations based on real-life events in philippine history (eg the similarity between ninoy's killing and the assassination of a makabayan senator in the book, etc.) but its retelling/re-weaving kumbaga is so surreal and postmodern that sometimes you have to step back and think a bit before proceeding to read. so dali, as in salvador dali, the surrealist painter and filmmaker who spearheaded that whole art movement, and flaherty, as in robert flaherty, the acknowledged father of the documentary film. mesh silang dalawa in style, and that's what the book has, in form and content. kaya siya exciting. kaya ko siya gusto...as a novel.

kaya imagine my disappointment...hay, sayang. oh well. sarap tuloy i-propose sa kanya na gawin na lang niyang film ito...

buti na lang nanood kami ng avenue q the next month. happiness! but that's another review.

survey slutting as remnants of the dyke dialogue

all together now: the internet is for porn...charot! :P

What do you prefer when you get into a relationship?

1- Would you rather have a fun fling or a lasting relationship?

2- What was your longest relationship?

5 years. it should have been cut into 3. what a waste.

3-What is your favorite personality trait?

mine? hm, this is hard to answer. i guess yung being persistent is one think i both like and hate in me. basta.

4- What is the most romantic thing a significant other could do?

just to make me feel that i am (still) important in her life is enough. simple gestures would do. pero sa akin, romantic yung niyayakap ka lagi.

5- When you are dating someone, what is the most important thing to you?

that i won't mess it up!

6- Do you like pet names (ex: baby, sweetheart...)?

yeah. i believe in the use of terms of endearment.

7- What is your ideal night out with a significant other?

a night of exploring...discovering a new food place, new play, new movie, whetever, basta exploring!

8- What is your ideal night in with a significant other?

ganun din -- exploring! exploring each other hehe :P

9- Would you be able to tell someone you love them, even if you didn't feel it?

man, that sucks. i only tell them what i feel. saka i am big on honesty. dapat tapat.

10- Do you like relationships that involve serious commitments?

11- If you ever got engaged, how would you want it to happen?

these things you don't plan e. so i don't know. basta it's just in the feeling, not the doing.

12- If you were engaged, would you want a wedding as soon as possible?

no. i really don't believe in the ritual of marriage. i think it has to be reinvented.

13- Do you like to talk about the future when in a serious relationship?

sometimes lang. dapat laging may reality check e

14- Do you prefer a sensitive open relationship or a strong silent type?

hindi ko magets ati. well, ayoko ng open relationship dahil i could get as possessive and jealous as hell. so strong silent type?

15- When in a relationship do you have to have contact with your partner on a daily basis?

oo naman! kahit simple lang basta may connect. i am also big on communication.

16- Do you like public displays of affection?

moderate, oo. malambing kasi ako kaya keri lang. huwag lang over.

17- Is there anything you won't tolerate while in a relationship?

gagayahin ko si anj: cheating. leche. hehe :p saka for some strange reason, i really don't like it when she is in touch with her exes. ewan ko ba... but i know that's wrong and i have to change that.

18- What is one thing that you value most in a relationship?

tenderness.

19- Would you ever be able to handle a long-distance situation?

goodness, no. pasig-marikina divide na nga lang nahihirapan na kami, what more ldr?

20- Do you believe in moving in together before engagement or marriage?

yes. you have to check the goods before purchase hehe

libay to most

bay to some relatives and friends

bayli to some good friends from our UPsappho days

opo. at masaya kami.

2. Have you ever been given a rose?

3. What is your all-time favorite romance movie?

wala ati. depende sa mood yan e

4. Have you ever been in love?

oo naman

5. Do you believe that everyone has a soul-mate?

i believe everyone has not one soul mate but several. that's because there is no one-to-one correspondence of souls. i believe people could come from the same soul, and it is up to us to hunt for or find the biggest soul chunk that matches yours.

i happen to believe i found a big soul chunk of mine in my girl right now, and i'm glad about that.

knowing ortigas and taureans

was in ortigas earlier today to run a few errands. it's just amazing how different it is now than when i was last there some years ago to work.

yeah, flashbacking mode ito.

sa strata 100 kasi ako pumunta, sa office ng mega magazine (where i contribute as a writer now). strata 100 was my "old playground" to quote lola madonna, dahil dito located ang dati naming office na premiere entertainment productions (or PEP as we called it). the revival of one of the 4 influential film studios of the golden age of philippine cinema, pep was my home ng mga 2 years or so, in the mid-90s after i graduated from UP film.

gulat lang ako kasi hi-tech na sila. dati, pinagti-trip-an pa naming umakyat sa floor namin o bumaba gamit ang stairs. yes, bata pa nga kami noon... pero ngayon, hi-tech na ang elevator. you have to key in the floor number na gusto mong puntahan, not merely up or down. ngayon lang kasi ako nakakita ng ganitong elevator kaya nagulat akesh.

kapag sweldo at trip naming mag-pig-out, sa el pueblo lang kami namimili ng kakainan. either tgifriday's lang naman yun or rack's. at pag inuman, lalo na happy hour, sa sidebar kami pumupunta. o kaya we carpool and visit our favorite haunt of all time, malate, where we hang out at café adriatico or somewhere else there, kung ano ang nice. episode and verve used to be nice, and used to be there. i'm not sure if it's still there.

those were really the days, eh?

nakakatawa lang. when my girlfriend and i made an appointment last year to see each other, ang marker namin ay "yung mcdo sa kanto sa likod ng megamall." being familiar with ortigas, alam namin agad kung saan iyon. everybody knows where that is. pero lo and behold, when we arrived, mcdo was no more...at isa na siyang malaking st. francis square chenes mall-y thing... funny talaga yun...and strange...for a while, na-lost akong nakatayo sa kantong iyon, figuring out what happened to the landmark i knew, and also figuring out where i could meet my girl at that area.

the landmarks of our youth are now being replaced by new landmarks of the youth of today. i guess ganyan lang talaga ang life. papalit-palit ng markers. for a taurus like me, that's both disconcerting kasi and exciting, depende sa sitwasyon.

was talking nga with a dear friend days ago about this. napaka-typical taurean ko nga raw. steady lang, di tulad ng iba naming friends na super-flash ang gusto, super-yaman, quick cash, quick fame, all that jazz. hindi kasi ako ganun e. at ayokong maging ganun. i'd rather be slow and steady, but sure of where i am, where i want to be, and where i'm going. if they want to live life in the fast lane, ako sa steady lane lang. kahit mabagal, i don't care. i'm in no rush to run my life. kaya okay na ko sa pace kong ito. deal with it.

kaya funny lang ulit when i had the chance to work again sa isang IT company sa ortigas ulit, this time sa JMT building ba yun? the one na katabi ng el pueblo na. even though i lasted in that stupid company for 5 months lang, nag-flashbacking mode ako ulit sa ortigas life ko noong mid-90s (mga early 2000s na kasi itong IT ek).

ano na kaya ang hitsura ng ortigas when this decade is over? mabilis ang facelift ng places these days. sometimes, i wonder if we will ever catch up with all of them. but then again, do we need to?

la lang.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:

UPFI'S 18th INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S FILM FESTIVAL
3rd SHORT FILM COMPETITION

The International Women's Film Festival (IWFF) hosted by the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI) is an annual exhibition of films by and about women -- the one and only running women's film festival of is kind in the Philippines held during Women's Month. It aims to highlight the importance of raising women's consciousness, promoting women's rights and empowerment primarily through cinema.

To give an added venue for women filmmakers to exhibit their works, UPFI is launching the Third IWFF Short Film competition. The competition is open to local and international women filmmakers. However, in the spirit of inclusiveness and openness, this year's competition will accept entries from individuals who may not be female at birth (such as transgenders and intersexed people) but who identify as women.

The IWFF Festival Committee would like to invite women filmmakers from all over the world to be part of this event by submitting their works. All genres are accepted. There is no entry fee to join this competition. Successful entries will be exhibited at the festival. Trophies and prizes will be given away to the best works.

The following are the complete guidelines for the competition:

1. The International Women's Film Festival Short Film and Video Competition is open to all women filmmakers, video makers and multimedia artists from all over the world. Submissions from individuals, groups or organizations are welcome as long as the primary filmmakers are women. Students and young filmmakers are highly encouraged to participate.

2. Entries must have been completed no earlier than January 1, 2000. Previous shortlisted entries to the earlier IWFF competitions are no longer qualified to join this year.

3. Works could be in any language, but they should have English subtitles. Entries without subtitles will not be accepted.

4. Entries can belong to any genre/categories such as narrative, documentary, animation, experimental or multi-media. Works can also be of mixed genres. Submissions should reflect this year's theme of "Wondering Wandering Wonderful Women" (tales of women and migration plus its accompanying issues and aspects).

5. The running time of entries must not exceed 30 minutes.

6. We will accept preview DVD and Mini-DV copies in NTSC format only. However, works could have originated in any of the following formats:

-- Any Film format (35mm, 16mm, 8mm)
-- Any Video NTSC/PAL-SECAM format (HD, DVD, S-VHS, Mini-DV etc.)
-- Any multi-media/new media device/s or using various information and communication technology (ICT) tools or software/hardware (e.g. computer-generated vector/fractal images, flash animation, etc.)

7. When selected for the competition, the preview copies will already serve as the exhibition copies. Filmmakers will be contacted to submit clearer (possibly NTSC DVD) versions only if their preview copies are found to be defective and hence unsuitable for large-screen projection.

8. Submitted works will not be returned to applicants and they will automatically become part of the UPFI IWFF archives. In this regard, please do not send your original works or master tapes/copies.

9. The cost of shipping and handling the submissions should be shouldered by the sender. When sending the package, please declare in the mail that contents have "No Commercial Value" or "For non-commercial/festival purposes only." The IWFF organizers will not shoulder any taxes, custom dues/duties/fees, delivery fees or any in-transit insurance in receiving the entries nor will they be held responsible for damage inflicted upon the packages resulting from the process of mailing.

10. All works must strictly be independent works and not produced for commercial purposes. Commissioned works are not allowed.

11. For submissions of several entries in one package, each entry must be properly labeled with the following:

-- Running Time

12. All entries must be submitted with the following materials:

patay na... at kuwentong ta-artits

>> tinatamad akong magsulat <<

waaaah. this is bad.

i have an article due this week for a magazine. pero dahil sa hindi gaanong kaaya-aya ang aking subject na isusulat... hay. sana iba na lang ang subject. mas masaya pa. ewan.

*

sa aking paglilipat ng bahay, i unearthed my writing folio stuff at naisip ko lang: ang una kong magazine cover story na ginawan ng article ay si rosanna roces pa! hahaha that really dates me, man. that was way back in 1998 pa yata, for The Cutting Edge magazine. the topic was osang and her being crazy about the internet. go figure.

but i liked that osang experience. nakakatuwa kasi siyang kausap e. kakaiba siyang artista. funny lang kasi before that, i was keeping my distance from her when she became our artista sa office ko before, sa premiere entertainment productions. meron laging photo op syempre tuwing dadating siya sa office. ang bukambibig niya noon instead of "cheese!" ay "ngiting one point five!" i guess alluding to her tf before na 1.5M. per picture. during 1996, that was a big deal, man. big bucks!

she was always larger than life. noong kaopisina ko pa si giselle sanchez, laging dadaan si osang sa cubicle namin ni giselle (talent management division kami nagsimula) tapos they will discuss things like silicone imlpants and stuff like that. which always made me shiver kasi parang sa akin, wafung ang ideyang magpa-breast implant (hello, ako gusto ko breast reduction lola!). tapos magrereklamo pa si osang na nananakit ang implant dahil naninigas ito pag taglamig ang panahon! aaahh too much information! si giselle kasi tanong ng tanong! kulet.

naka-engkuwentro ko lang ulit si osang after that TCE cover story when i had to do another story about her for Pinoy Times special weekend edition naman. bilang entertainment editor ng dyaryong iyon, ako lagi ang naaatasang gumawa ng showbiz-related articles for the weekend magazine edition. i forgot na what topic i did for osang. something about showbiz tax and layoffs sa dos yata yun.

tut-tut-tut. aw! chos.

katamad.

21 January 2008

back from the un-dead + publication news

isa lang ang masasabi ko: mahirap magkasakit.

kakagaling ko lang sa isang linggong pahinga ng utak at katawan. pareho silang nadale. i guess yan ang pa-hapinuyir sa akin ng kalawakan. kelangang mag-detox to pave way for new stuff na malalanghap whether voluntarily or involuntarily...

dami ko tuloy na-miss. anj, hope that videoke went well. bubbles kapatid, hope you had a nice painum sa pinyahan! highschool peeps, hope you had fun at hereford!

anyway, meron pa naman sa 26th. atak tayo mga byanakerz ha. dyke dialogues 3. hope to see you there. same spot G spot hehe. chos.

hm, on second thought, sige na nga!

BUY THE BOOK! BUY T
HE BOOK! BUY THE BOOK!

did you know that that was the name of the bookstore owned by ellen degeneres' character sa original ELLEN sitcom? yes, the one where she came out. natutuwa ako kasi yun ang name ng store: buy the book. funny.

anyway, yeah, buy this:

it's called SAWI: FUNNY ESSAYS, STORIES AND POEMS ON ALL KINDS OF HEARTBREAK.

it's edited by 3 atene
o-connected people. sobrang ten thousand years ago na ito pero last 2007 lang lumabas. well, such is the life sa literary publishing dito sa pinas.

i have yet to get my free copies, though, but i've seen the insides already.

okay ito pa:

now this one i like. it's flash fiction kasi e, or sudden fiction as we sometimes call it. in filipino, it's called dagli. actually, sa dami ng contributors, the editor, vince groyon, decided to come out with two volumes, one in english and filipino yung isa. english ang sinumite ko kaya dito ako na-belong, sa VERY SHORT STORIES FOR HARRIED READERS.

the story i have here is the product naman of the online writers' workshop namin dati nina cecilia manguerra bra
inard and a host of other fil-something writers na nakakalat sa buong mundo, like nadine sarreal in singapore, veronica montes in the US and others.

again, milflores ang naglabas nito. hapi!

*

*

inaabangan ko rin yung isa pang chever publication, this time from india naman, sa ating mga kapatid sa tarshi at crea. excited ako dun kasi first time kong ma-publish sa india. yehey! sa asia kasi, sa malaysia at singapore pa lang ata ako na-publish kasi. hm. la lang. :) with photos nga pala ito kaya i'm doubly excited, parang yung publication dati sa australia.

ayuz.

buy the books! buy the books!

*

ay oo nga pala tanga! how could i forget this one!

well, this is not exactly the book cover but i'm guessing the cover will look somewhat a bit like this. it's lunduyan ng sining's lesbian literary folio entitled WHAT THESE HANDS CAN DO. er, ladies, hindi ba dapat fingers? mwehehehehe chos.

i have one short story here na produkto rin ng online writers' workshop namin nina cecilia.happy ito kasi ito, may actual booklaunch chenes. head over to the lunduyan multiply site to know the details. basta kitakits tayo dito ha, feb8 ito. go go go mga byaning! happiness!

buy the book! attend the launch! buy the book! attend the launch!

hmm, the year of the rat is looking good for this bookworm, so far... ayuz. more to come sana. yebah.

buy the book!
