U.P. FILM INSTITUTE SUMMER WORKSHOPS 2011

BASIC SCRIPTWRITING WORKSHOP:

VISUALIZATION FROM SCRIPT TO SCREEN

By Libay Linsangan Cantor

Brief workshop outline:

The goal of this workshop is to introduce scriptwriting to a general audience.

The lectures are specifically designed for those who do not have any formal/informal background or experience whatsoever in filmmaking, media, the arts, (other forms of) writing and the humanities in general. It could also serve as a good review for those who have the aforementioned background and who plan to start working in the field of film and TV scriptwriting.

The workshop will cover an overview of the film/TV industry and a brief introduction to basic filmmaking language as applicable to scriptwriting, discussions on the anatomy of a screenplay, learning scriptwriting essentials, studying narrative structures, characterization and story plotting.

Facilitator profile:

Prof. Libay Linsangan Cantor is a two-time winner of the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in 1997. She used to have a literary column entitled “The Scribe Vibe” at the Manila Times newspaper’s Sunday Times (2008-2010). She now contributes regularly to the Philippine Online Chronicles (POC) Pinoy LGBT channel online webzine by Vibal Foundation since June 2010.

A trained TV/film scriptwriter, she won honorable mention for her full-length screenplay at the 1998 Film Development of the Philippines Inc. (FDFPI, now known as the Film Development Council of the Philippines) annual screenwriting competition. She began scriptwriting for children’s TV shows in 2001 with the ABS-CBN Foundation-produced Epol/Apple educational program. In 2006, she began directing for TV, handling the Saturday morning TV show Lovely Day for GMA-7. She also scripted several seasons of other GMA-7 children’s shows Happy Land and Sunnyville in 2009-2010 and also directed selected episodes of both shows. She is currently part of the scriptwriter’s pool of an upcoming ABS-CBN 2 TV show.

Prof. Libay has a BA in Film and Audiovisual Communication degree from UP College of Mass Communication and an MA in Creative Writing from the UP College of Arts and Letters. She teaches basic scriptwriting, narrative cinema, basic filmmaking and directing courses at the UP Film Institute.

Manila Times column for 10 May 2009: "Writing what you know of the world"

original post here.

THE SCRIBE VIBE
By Libay Linsangan Cantor
Writing what you know of the world

In writing workshops, beginning writers are often encouraged to start writing about what they know first, before venturing out into writing about more complex and unfamiliar material. I agree, and I also don’t. I think all writers—newbies or not—should heed this encouragement.

In literary workshops, I have often heard the advice that a writer should focus on the world that s/he knows, first and foremost, before writing about things outside their worlds. We writers are often trained to look for that precious insight, that one thing (or two) that would differentiate our story from others’ stories, the thought that would hopefully inspire or rouse readers to think about things around us, about a particular aspect of human existence. I agree with this.

Far too often, writers tend to turn their back on their own backyards, so to speak, and write about things that are “more exciting” or “more challenging” that they see in “other worlds.” I just wish they could look around them sometime, so they could discover that something or someone within their vicinity could actually serve as an inspiration for a story waiting to be told. For instance, I remember meeting this woman whose maiden name sounded like the name of a very old school in Manila. When I inquired about this, it turned out that the school was indeed owned by their family and it was about to be sold. That alone puts their family in a certain historical position that only she has the privilege to tell and unfold in a story. Since we were in a documentary workshop when we met, I suggested that she write and make a documentary about that aspect of their family, and she mentioned that it was indeed one of her future plans. I hope she went through with it.

This is not to say that we writers should just stick to writing what we know. If we want to write about things outside of our own spheres of existence, that’s also great, but only if the proper homework is done. What I mean is that writers should do their research when they’re writing about something unfamiliar to them. It also happens that sometimes, writers tend to take short cuts and write what they know of a certain thing without the benefit of research. Thus, material such as these appears shallow, impressionistic and often unrealistic. Authenticity is still the key; if your plot seems unbelievable because of faulty information or details, then the story won’t fly.

Just imagine the tons of stories we’ll hear from different walks of life, if only one out of a hundred Filipinos shared them with the world. That’s a lifetime’s worth of anthologies, not to mention a good contribution to our recorded culture and history.

isa lang ang masasabi ko: mahirap magkasakit.

kakagaling ko lang sa isang linggong pahinga ng utak at katawan. pareho silang nadale. i guess yan ang pa-hapinuyir sa akin ng kalawakan. kelangang mag-detox to pave way for new stuff na malalanghap whether voluntarily or involuntarily...

dami ko tuloy na-miss. anj, hope that videoke went well. bubbles kapatid, hope you had a nice painum sa pinyahan! highschool peeps, hope you had fun at hereford!

anyway, meron pa naman sa 26th. atak tayo mga byanakerz ha. dyke dialogues 3. hope to see you there. same spot G spot hehe. chos.

hm, on second thought, sige na nga!

BUY THE BOOK! BUY T
HE BOOK! BUY THE BOOK!

did you know that that was the name of the bookstore owned by ellen degeneres' character sa original ELLEN sitcom? yes, the one where she came out. natutuwa ako kasi yun ang name ng store: buy the book. funny.

anyway, yeah, buy this:

it's called SAWI: FUNNY ESSAYS, STORIES AND POEMS ON ALL KINDS OF HEARTBREAK.

it's edited by 3 atene
o-connected people. sobrang ten thousand years ago na ito pero last 2007 lang lumabas. well, such is the life sa literary publishing dito sa pinas.

i have yet to get my free copies, though, but i've seen the insides already.

okay ito pa:

now this one i like. it's flash fiction kasi e, or sudden fiction as we sometimes call it. in filipino, it's called dagli. actually, sa dami ng contributors, the editor, vince groyon, decided to come out with two volumes, one in english and filipino yung isa. english ang sinumite ko kaya dito ako na-belong, sa VERY SHORT STORIES FOR HARRIED READERS.

the story i have here is the product naman of the online writers' workshop namin dati nina cecilia manguerra bra
inard and a host of other fil-something writers na nakakalat sa buong mundo, like nadine sarreal in singapore, veronica montes in the US and others.

*

inaabangan ko rin yung isa pang chever publication, this time from india naman, sa ating mga kapatid sa tarshi at crea. excited ako dun kasi first time kong ma-publish sa india. yehey! sa asia kasi, sa malaysia at singapore pa lang ata ako na-publish kasi. hm. la lang. :) with photos nga pala ito kaya i'm doubly excited, parang yung publication dati sa australia.

ayuz.

buy the books! buy the books!

*

ay oo nga pala tanga! how could i forget this one!

well, this is not exactly the book cover but i'm guessing the cover will look somewhat a bit like this. it's lunduyan ng sining's lesbian literary folio entitled WHAT THESE HANDS CAN DO. er, ladies, hindi ba dapat fingers? mwehehehehe chos.

i have one short story here na produkto rin ng online writers' workshop namin nina cecilia.happy ito kasi ito, may actual booklaunch chenes. head over to the lunduyan multiply site to know the details. basta kitakits tayo dito ha, feb8 ito. go go go mga byaning! happiness!

buy the book! attend the launch! buy the book! attend the launch!

hmm, the year of the rat is looking good for this bookworm, so far... ayuz. more to come sana. yebah.

buy the book!

plug before the plunge

in less than ten hours, the 6th barlaya writing for young adult workshop will be commencing, and that's where you'll find me (the next two days). but here i am, still up and running here. i kinda need some help sleeping lately so that's what i'm doing now.

but i'm actually looking forward to tomorrow. it's just a bummer that it takes place in makati, and going there during rush hour is not the greatest of manila experiences, believe me, even in this time of the mrt, lrt and fx colorums. hay. gudlak sa paggising ng break of dawn, no? hay...sometimes this insomnia gets in the way of life. oh well.

*

some feedback. you're right kee, sanctum earned a lot because of both the ogling and the blitzkrieg ways hehehe. although if i only had the courage then that i do now, man i woulda asked her talaga to just...one night lang devah hehe. pero takot akong jombagin ni blitzkrieg heheehehehehe. although saw her two years ago at mukha na siyang tuyot, without the blitzkrieg in tow. hm i wonder...

hay talagang those were the days...

hey rench, what you doing there in davao na? kwento ka naman.

thanks for the comment ES. yes matagal na kong blogger. nag-u-upcat pa lang kayo, blogger na kami hehehe. good luck with your work. see you around if ever.

*

some note to self thingy delivered by the stars today:

Taurus (Apr 20 - May 20)

Although you are usually sure of yourself once you make up your mind, today it may feel as if you continue to give yourself opposing commands. Unfortunately, it's difficult to reduce the current issues to black and white. Fortunately, there's no need to do this. Listen carefully to all voices without trying to silence any of them.

tama. ang galing ano. kainizzz. i'm listening! i'm listening! and yeah, i really need to remember the gray areas. but sometimes one really needs to be on either side, without being blurred in the middle by both.

*

o sha, see you later folks.

on giving up, giving in and giving out

i think i'm reacting to an upsurge of conservatism and traditionalism these days. maybe that's why i'm haywiring. i don't really understand when, in this day and age of pomo thinking (or postmodern, as what my friend roselle said), dapat nga post-pomo and meta-whatever na dapat ang approach natin sa ating mga buhay at sining kaya lang di ko mawari kung bakit tila pabaligtad yata ang orbit ng earth around the sun.

but no. until the old geezers and their younger minions die, there is no hope for the uplifting and challenging of norms in this country. i honestly wonder where all the progressives have gone. i can't seem to detect them with any available radar on board.

it gets me thinking again. thinking of leaving. i really wonder why there is such a backlash/backslide in conservative mode of approaching art and artists when in fact, the very essence of art and artists is not nailed on conservatism. that is such a strange thing to realize. but what's worse is to see how the supposed messengers of post-pomo thinking are harking back to the old ways when even the dark ages seemed peachy. now that is one scary motherfucking realization all right. hay...

man. only a voyage dans le lune or a journey down the 2000 leagues under the sea would cure/solve/remedy all this. hay... but are we ready to plunge? we will channel georges melies and jules verne for this one. plus maybe with a little help from icarus might be nice.

dig in. take off.

*

shut down and shut off. these are the two modes i have been ruminating on doing lately. i wonder why is that so?

*

i am genuinely saddened by the fact that there are still no legal rights to claim your loved one's rightful earnings as yours, in the event of sickness or death. everything reverts back to the family, who may or may not have cared for the lovers in the fist place. and people around them are somewhat reinforcing that. i am just so saddened.

my default is to identify and sympathize with the one who was left. but again, even if they didn't mean to, people have their homophobias surface when in fact it is so easy for them to just join the fight and fight for their friends' rights. but they do not do that.

sad...

however, in the end, sometimes economics rule far better than romance, or even love. and economics do not have emotions, just denominations. pera o bayong?

pera syempre, sabi nila.

yun na.

hermit crab mode

october 1997. i was in beautiful bantayan island about 2 hours away from cebu's city center, holed in a resort with literary luminaries and hopeful young and not so young writers. kinda beatnik poet ed geronia picked up a hermit crab and made a name plate for him, and put him on the table with all our things and nameplates. yes, hermit crab became part of the UP writers workshop.

i am flashbacking to this moment now because it was the first time i saw a hermit crab. and when i saw what it could do, i was amazed. whenever and wherever it wanted, it could retract inside its own little world and hide from its strong shell if it doesn't want anybody to bother it. and not even the roar of the seas could make its head appear and such. at that time, i admired the hermit crab.

and now, i want to be a hermit crab. for real.

where do i find a fairy godmother with a wand, now?

pish tosh.

*

earlier, i kissed (more like beso besoed) a worker who pretends to be an artist who pretends to care for real. my friend, who was with me and who was also kissed, shared a few laughs with me when we assessed the whole scenario.some people never learn, and some people never learn to tell the difference.

indeed.

the bottomline is still the same: opportunists suck. reek. stench to near-death levels it makes kamineros wanna puke.

blah.

*

there is still one bottomline here. we are faced with a hamlet mode. to be or not to be. but then, there is no outrageous fortune to partake of. no slings, not even arrows... but maybe ghosts that haunt the castle at certain times of sanity when aloneness seems to creep within the edifice of the building and of the body, when the creeping produces burning within the mind and numbing of the heart, but mostly, stilling of the heart that could either bleed or beat.

*

2 down, 4 more to go, plus an older sibling and a friend, and the mother.

life will not stink anymore when this happens. i hope this happens soon. soon enough!

walang magawa mode

was with faculty friends last night checking out housing situations in UP. and we came to the conclusion that indeed, UP has no housing plan for us. old faculty members who retire are kicked out of their UP homes. so many vacant spaces but the applications are not yet processed. gagawa nga ng dorm for junior faculty pero 3 in 1 ang room. those who availed of housing do not actually live in the houses and they rent it out because they have their own houses outside. sucks.

majorly depressing.

buti pa ateneo may pa-rent to own na pala daw. no wonder some colleagues are migrating there. hm.

hay, depressing thought...

makes me rethink of the whole system... hm.

ewan.

so kung depressed, mag-blogthang!

Never Date a Gemini

Uncommitted, unfocused, and more selfish than they let on - a gemini is a full time project you don't want to take on.
You may be attracted to a Gemini's wit and energy, but you'll be exhausted after an hour!

Instead try dating: Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, or Capricorn

haha ayuz. funny ito. nakita ko sa blog ni jovan. so i should date mga ka-sign ko pala, bilang taurus? hmmm. lethal yun, lalo na't year of the ox din sila. multiplier effect ang mga toro hehe. pati torohan? nyahahahaha. chos.

cancer yata di pa ko nakaka-date...o di ko maalala. yeah, scorpio and capricorn na-try na pero no luck. mahirap for a beast of burden like my sign...trust me. pero dapat ang award dito ay pisces. dated a piscean before and it was the worst of all time. swear. masyado silang...matubig. sa hindi magandang paraan.

figure that one out.

hm bigla ko tuloy tinext yung dine-date ko lately at tinanong ang sign niya hahaha. natawa ko. sinagot naman niya. so i explained why when she asked why i wanted to know. and i like what she said "so we're okay."

hahaha yeah, we are. we truly are.

*

naaaliw ako sa feedback sa NAPOLEON DYNAMITE review ko. daming nag-defend. yeah, kia i think it's more of a cultural thing. at that point in time, i wasn't really looking for a film like that. pero what made me stick was i wanted to see what kinds of characters they will become. yeah geeky mode na simple na patawa nga siya, pero i guess wala ako sa mode na yun when i watched it. okay naman.

as for KALELDO or summer heat, maganda siya. yung slowness there worked well. parang na-capture niya ang mood sa semi-rural pampanga during summer at nag-a-unfold ang mga pangyayari sa isang patriyarkal na pamilya. interesting, not to mention good cinematography. i think so far, this is the filmmaker's best film yet. although i have a beef about the staging of the lesbian sex scene, pero i forgive the gay guy. pero magaling si cherry pie dito, at saka revelation lang si criselda volks. i knew this gal way back sa premiere productions pa before in '96, artista namin siya, mga starlet on the side baga. pero okay siya dito sa film na to, pero ayoko ng naging character development niya.

try catching ROME AND JULIET there mare. and let's exchange notes hehehe.

REKADOS

written and directed by paolo herras, this is a film about women's containment in philippine society as represented by their usually designated societal role of being cooks in the household kitchen. spans three generations of cooks, from lola boots anson roa to daughter eula valdez to apo meryll soriano.

ang beef ko lang dito ay yung overall story treatment. okay yung may magic realism touches siya minsan a la COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE saka yung ie-enumerate yung ingredients ng dishes sa screen. pero i'm not sure if the voice overs work. i don't think it does. i think he has to rewrite it in such a way na it won't appear like the characters are overly-intellectualizing or "over-philosophizing" (kung may word mang ganto) yung state nila sa life at the moment. insights ito oo pero awkward yung pagkakalagay e. feeling ko if it remained as a quiet movie, baka mag-work pa better than have the characters narrate to us their inner thoughts chenes. look at what happened to BLADERUNNER when ridley scott scrapped the VO totally. nag-iba yung mood and mode! baka it'll work din with this film. awkward kasi minsan e. pilit baga. but well, knowing pash, ganyan siya minsan kasi.

pash is pao's pseudonym sa '98 o '99 ba yun na UP writers workshop. met him there the first time i worked as a "workshop slave" doing photo and video doc. he's but, what, 17 ba o 16 at that time? the kid's totally gifted. and i'm glad he's writing still, and continues his art now in this medium. happy for him.

more digifilms next week at the cinemalaya. kitakits.

i opted to go back to the dating circle again, just to feel that i'm alive and still kicking, and i am amazed at what is available out there. it's just surprising to find openly out people like me out there, hanging out with openly out people like them, too. see, for the longest time, i've been tied to women who are closeted in one form or another, be it their family, workplace, or whatnot. but as a good friend once told me, kasi i am attracted to women that are hard to have. hence closeted nga. hmmmm, revelation!

pero ngayon, parang gusto ko na ng babaeng hindi takot ilantad ang kanyang sekswalidad sa labas ng lipunan. isang babae na hindi natatakot sa sasabihin ng iba, at walang ganong mawawala sa kanya sa pagpapakita ng sarili niya sa madla. not to get me wrong ha. this is not dissing closeted people. i respect them with utmost pride, kasi i know how hard it is to keep this facet of their life hidden. sana nga, kung puwede lang, i-open na lang ang lahat. pero iba nga kasi ang kalakaran ng society, kaya hindi puwede. ganun talaga ang buhay e...

may kaibigan akong ilan nang date ang ganun, di takot maglantad. naninibago nga siya, kasi halos lagpas sampung taon siyang tali sa tagong relasyon. ang hirap ano. samantalang ako, limang taong tali at tago dati. ayoko na yatang maging tali at tago...

hay.

pero that's the gay guy speaking. iba pa rin ang babaeng nagmamahal ng kapwa babae e. lalo na sa bansang ito. hay nakuh...

Basic Scriptwriting: Visualizing from Scratch is a workshop intended for the absolute beginner, who has no background whatsoever in film, writing, media or the arts, but who wants to discover the possibilities of scriptwriting. It introduces participants to the "real basics" of writing for film, from the "translation" of written abstract concepts into visual-moving images (and vice versa – translation of perceived cinematic images into the written word), to a hands-on discovery of the essential concepts and components of a script that works.

The workshop facilitator, Libay Linsangan Cantor, is a faculty member of the UP Film Institute, teaching courses like Scriptwriting, Directing, and Language and Grammar of Film. She is currently the head of UPFI's Academic Programs and Research. An experienced TV scriptwriter of children's educational shows, she has garnered local & international awards for her full-length screenplay, photography, and video productions, and has received Palanca Awards for her literary works. She also directs for TV.
