The Global Lens Collection

Border Café (Iran, 2005, Kambozia Partovi)

A young widow takes over her late husband's truck stop café, keeping hidden in the kitchen so as not to cause a scandal in Iran's conservative society. But her brother-in-law, out of familial obligation, wants to take her as a wife and also take over the café. Meanwhile a Greek trucker who is a frequent café customer, is slowly entranced - at first by her sublime cooking ability, and then by her.

Buffalo Boy (Vietnam, 2004, Nguyen-Vô Nghiem-Minh)

In this powerful coming-of-age story set in rural 1940s Vietnam, a young man takes up with a rough band of nomadic buffalo herders and discovers freedom, violence and love - but also secrets about his past that will change his life forever.

Dam Street (China, 2005, Li Yu)

In the early–1980s, Xiao Yun—a sixteen year–old girl living in small riverside town in China—discovers she is pregnant. In the aftermath, her boyfriend leaves her, and she gives birth and is then forced to put her child up for adoption. Ten years later, Xiao Yunn is reduced to working as a singer in a local song and dance troupe. And her only real companion is Xiao Yong, a fiercely affectionate boy who protects her from the critical eyes of the community until a marriage proposal discovers the limits of their friendship, and the depth of her unresolved past.

Let the Wind Blow (India, 2004, Partho Sen-Gupta)

At the height of nuclear tensions between India and Pakistan, Arjun and his best friend, Chabia, weigh their options for the future against the reality of life on the streets of Mumbai. Enticed by the promise of wealth and opportunity in the Persian Gulf, Chabia is eager to leave his job as a mechanic. But for Arjun, who must finish college and care for his mother, the decision is not so easy in director Partho Sen-Gupta's gritty, apocalyptic interpretation of Krishna's counsel to Arjuna, from the Bhagavad Gita.

Of Love and Eggs (Indonesia, 2004, Garin Nugroho)

The ever-surprising Garin Nugroho, angered by a Muslim cleric's call for the banning of a comedy for teenagers, responds by making a censor-proof movie about a working-class community in Jakarta during the Lebaran holiday. Shot entirely in the studio), it lovingly recreates the tone, style and pastel hues of an Indonesian comedy from the heyday of the studio system. his film brings this gentle humor to complex relationships between parents and children, and to social and religious issues of life in and around a Jakarta mosque, through the eyes and voices of children, and the powerful imagery of a prayer rug, young love—and eggs.

The Bet Collector (Philippines, 2006, Jeffrey Jeturian)

Amy, the family matriarch, makes ends meet by running a small convenience store out of her home. But in a struggling economy customers are scarce, and without the help of her husband or pregnant daughter, she is forced to supplement the family income by collecting bets for an illegal numbers game. In this starkly realistic narrative, director Jeffrey Jeturian presents a captivating portrait of a once-proud woman, haunted by memories of a dead son and hounded by the police, and her fragile and lonely life as a kubrador (bet collector) on the streets of Manila.

A Fabulous Journey with “The ‘Thank You’ Girls”

In gay lingo, beauty pageant candidates who do not make it as semi-finalists are called "backstage
beauties", "clappers" or "thank you girls".

The writer of the box-office hit "Daybreak" and Asian Film Awards nominee Charliebebs “Bebs” Gohetia ventures into his first full-length directorial debut with a fun and funny gay film about beauty pageant losers in 'The ‘Thank You’ Girls” (TYG).

TYG is an interesting, intelligent comedy about six dysfunctional gay beauty pageant veterans who embark on a journey from their hometown Davao City to Cagayan de Oro City to join a big contest riding in a loudly colored orange jeep.

This indie film provides a breath of fresh air from the usual gay films released this year about tragedy and sex. Shot for ten days in the breathtaking landscapes of Davao , Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro, Bebs used nonprofessional Visayan actors for the film, most of them real beauty pageant contestants in Davao .

"In TYG, crossdressing gays are not the subject of ridicule but are portrayed as intelligent, strong individuals who have dreams, aspirations and personal issues like anybody else. This wonderful, colorful side of gayness is rarely explored in films and I hope that after watching TYG, the audience will be more understanding and more accepting of how diverse the world is", Bebs says.

Aside from being Bebs' first full length film, TYG offers other firsts. This is the first production venture of New York based film outfit Brooklyn Park Pictures, the first line producing job of renowned indie director Adolfo Alix, Jr., and the first movie to use Visayan gay lingo as its language.

"What's unique about the film is that it transcends gender preferences and sexuality. Gays will love TYG for its fabulous costumes and its empowering message. Women will love it for its wit. Straight men will learn from it," comments James R. Hohl, the film’s executive producer.

TYG has already been invited to compete at an international film festival in September. But before that, Filipinos will have a chance to watch its world premiere with tagalog subtitles on August 28, 2008, at the UP Cine Adarna (formerly UP Film Center ) at 6:30pm. Tickets are 100php each.

survey slutting as remnants of the dyke dialogue

all together now: the internet is for porn...charot! :P

---------

What do you prefer when you get into a relationship?

1- Would you rather have a fun fling or a lasting relationship?

2- What was your longest relationship?

5 years. it should have been cut into 3. what a waste.

3-What is your favorite personality trait?

mine? hm, this is hard to answer. i guess yung being persistent is one think i both like and hate in me. basta.

4- What is the most romantic thing a significant other could do?

just to make me feel that i am (still) important in her life is enough. simple gestures would do. pero sa akin, romantic yung niyayakap ka lagi.

5- When you are dating someone, what is the most important thing to you?

that i won't mess it up!

6- Do you like pet names (ex: baby, sweetheart...)?

yeah. i believe in the use of terms of endearment.

7- What is your ideal night out with a significant other?

a night of exploring...discovering a new food place, new play, new movie, whetever, basta exploring!

8- What is your ideal night in with a significant other?

ganun din -- exploring! exploring each other hehe :P

9- Would you be able to tell someone you love them, even if you didn't feel it?

man, that sucks. i only tell them what i feel. saka i am big on honesty. dapat tapat.

10- Do you like relationships that involve serious commitments?

11- If you ever got engaged, how would you want it to happen?

these things you don't plan e. so i don't know. basta it's just in the feeling, not the doing.

12- If you were engaged, would you want a wedding as soon as possible?

no. i really don't believe in the ritual of marriage. i think it has to be reinvented.

13- Do you like to talk about the future when in a serious relationship?

sometimes lang. dapat laging may reality check e

14- Do you prefer a sensitive open relationship or a strong silent type?

hindi ko magets ati. well, ayoko ng open relationship dahil i could get as possessive and jealous as hell. so strong silent type?

15- When in a relationship do you have to have contact with your partner on a daily basis?

oo naman! kahit simple lang basta may connect. i am also big on communication.

16- Do you like public displays of affection?

moderate, oo. malambing kasi ako kaya keri lang. huwag lang over.

17- Is there anything you won't tolerate while in a relationship?

gagayahin ko si anj: cheating. leche. hehe :p saka for some strange reason, i really don't like it when she is in touch with her exes. ewan ko ba... but i know that's wrong and i have to change that.

18- What is one thing that you value most in a relationship?

tenderness.

19- Would you ever be able to handle a long-distance situation?

goodness, no. pasig-marikina divide na nga lang nahihirapan na kami, what more ldr?

20- Do you believe in moving in together before engagement or marriage?

yes. you have to check the goods before purchase hehe

1. 3 names you go by:

libay to most

bay to some relatives and friends

bayli to some good friends from our UPsappho days

2. Three Things You Are Wearing Right Now:

bracelet, bra, panty

3. Five Things you cant live without:

food, water, the internet (not for porn ha hehe), a bath once a day, tissue

4. Whats your Fav. cake?

i'm a pie person, not a cake person. teka, saan ba ang chcolate mousse? exception yun.

You must answer every question TRUTHFULLY!

1. Are you currently in a relationship?

opo. at masaya kami.

2. Have you ever been given a rose?

3. What is your all-time favorite romance movie?

wala ati. depende sa mood yan e

4. Have you ever been in love?

oo naman

5. Do you believe that everyone has a soul-mate?

i believe everyone has not one soul mate but several. that's because there is no one-to-one correspondence of souls. i believe people could come from the same soul, and it is up to us to hunt for or find the biggest soul chunk that matches yours.

i happen to believe i found a big soul chunk of mine in my girl right now, and i'm glad about that.

6. Whats/Who is your current problem?

assholes who don't cooperate at work

7. Have you ever had your heart broken?

one too many times it seems

8.Your thoughts of online or long distance relationship?

not a good thing. anong silbi ang makipagrelasyon sa taong di mo mahawakan o matikman?

9.Have you ever seen a friend as more than a friend?

10. Do you believe the statement "once a cheater always a cheater"?

yeah. it's hard to shake that off e, kahit ano pa mang rehab ang gawin niya.

11.How many kids do you want to have?

just one will do. adopt lang, not via my chuva.

12.What is/are your favorite color(s)?

complementaries blue and orange. plus a host of tertiary colors.

13. Do you believe you only love once?

no. you can love several times pero varying degrees.

14.are you and your ex friends?

yea i am a bitch like dat

15.Imagine you're 40 , you have kids and your spouse just died, would you re-marry?

laboh

16. at what age did you start likeing the opposite sex?

we are born into heterosexuality and heteronormativity so maliit pa lang nariyan na iyan.

18. Do you like anyone right now?

sorry i can't say the same about your organizing. madaming nagreklamo -- at nag-blog ng reklamo nila -- during the PISAY showing. make this a part of your assessment sana and next time, mas pro tayo dapat. keri?

chos.

basta.

*

at least this year, may attempts of indie naman sa materyal at execution, unlike last year na hello, itatanong mo kung sino nga ang nag-sponsor ng mga pelikula. star? viva? unitel? e parang produkto nila e, at parang produkto ng mga CDGs nila, na pinaghirapang i-brainstorm ng mga utaw para ma-achieve ang glossy look and story. grabe lang sa pagka-mainstream last year. walang lumipad.

this year, meron naman. tulad ng may pagka-neo-realist approach ng TRIBU ni jim libiran. at ang sobrang talagang totoong true to life approach ng acting-directing sa ENDO ni jade castro. sa wakas dude, natupad na rin ang pangarap mong maging direktor! nakasama ko kasi siya some years ago sa cdg ng isang soap at napaa-distinct ng conversation namin na iyon na nilalahad niyang gusto niyang maging direktor, at saka ni-reveal niya na weird siya kasi tuwing manonood siya ng pelikula sa dvd, sinasabayan niya ng director's commentary chenes. so at least something paid off for the dude. but more of that later. congrats jade.

tuwa din ako sa mga kidz ko kasi karamihan sa kanila ay nag-participate sa paggawa ng ibang pelikula. revelation itong si cha, a brilliant feminist writer na student ko dati sa 3 classes na. lost ako sa kanya dati dahil sobra siyang shy at walang confidence sa sariling gawa pero sa totoo lang, isa siya sa mataas na bingyan ko ng grade sa script at production classes kasi maganda ang style ng bata at mas importante, may sinasabing makabuluhan. pero aktor siya ngayon dun sa TRIBU, at R-18 performance to boot. i'm glad she's coming out of her shell, finally. i hope the others like her will, too. pero huwag lang masobrahan na they end up sobrang bilib sa sarili. ang dami kasing ganun sa kanila ngayon e, naturingang sobrang bata.

pero i'm glad they also have more chances to participate these days. thanks to the boom of the music video genre and the indie full-length digi scene, mas marami na silang natututunan sa labas ng klasrum na i hope bumabalanse sa natututunan nila sa loob. minsan nga lang, naaadik sila sa labas at kinukutya na ang loob. di rin naman maganda yun. pero kanya-kanya lang priority yun, i guess... still, i wish them the best, and i hope they take care of themselves and their peers, na walang dayaan at sungitan. sa dami na ng opportunities nila ngayon, share share na dapat ang mode, di tulad dati noon sa amin at sa ibang older and slightly younger batches na kahit naturingang barkada or kaibigan, nagdadamutan, to the point of saksakan pa, figuratively speaking. kaya tignan niyo na lang sila ngayon... hay. sad lang. di na yata matatakasan na ang film dept/film school/institute na iyon ay microcosm talaga ng philippine showbiz, mainstream man o independent. as in, noon hanggang ngayon.

oh well...

flashback lang. naaalala ko lang when we were in our final year of school noon. a bunch of them friends na paminsan-minsan e sumasama sa amin ay characterized na member ng isang elite exclusive club na sila-sila productions ang dating. ang iba sa kanila'y kilala na at may posisyon na sa creatives ng telebisyon samantalang ang iba ay nag-iba ng direksiyon at pamumuhay. kilala sila bilang raketeros. at noong 1994, rare na may mga avp rakets and all ka, kasi kokonti lang ang ganun, kaya damutan sa info ang labas ng karamihan sa kanila. at itong club na to, gumawa rin sila ng sarili nilang mga productions outside class requirements, for creativity purposes baga. wala namang prublema doon. in fact, natutuwa kami kasi at least may iba sa amin na ganun. dati kasi, kapag sobrang nangangailangan ka lang ng pera, doon ka lang raraket, hindi tulad ngayon na binabalanse ng mga bata ang raket at school. mas ginugol namin ang oras sa pag-aaral at panonood ng sandamakmak na pelikula at pag-attend sa mga art chenes to make us wholesome creative artists baga. and have fun with friends to boot. the lunch bunch! yan ang grupo ko. mas buhay pa kami sa patay na UP Cineastes noon at mas fun at aktibo sa naghihingalo at pinipilit kaming i-recruit na UP Cast noon. e kinse kaya kami, plus yung ibang minsanang sumasama from younger and older batches. so isang org na kami diba? pero keri lang. friends pa rin kaming lahat kahit iba-iba ang goals namin bilang barkadahan at individuals.

one day, they decided to open up their "membership" to other classmates. isa-isang nilapitan at kinausap ang mga chosen ones. komento ng karamihan sa amin "ano sila, diyos?" dahil nga sa namimili daw sila ng "best of the best" chenes. ako naman, i was just taking it all in stride, at natatawa lang ako kasi parang ang immature ng set-up. at saka aliw at kuntento na ko sa buhay ko noon kaya di ako bothered ng ganitong ka-showbiz-ang chenes (which actually proved as a useful training for me when i went deep into showbiz work myself -- survival jacket ko siya, up to now).

one day, their kinda "creative leader" approached me and talked to me, recruiting me. it was just so absurd i felt like we were inside a fellini film, 8 1/2 to be exact, dahil medyo surrreal na theatrical na mind-boggling siya na ewan, just like the movie. out of curiosity and just to humor myself, i asked him kung bakit ako ang isa sa napili nila. our conversation went like this, kinda, not verbatim:

SYA: i think you will be an excellent addition to the group.
ME: (natatawa) puwede bang magtanong? bakit ako napili niyo?
SYA: (napapa-smirk) come on libay, i think you know. do you need your ego boosted?
ME: (lalong natatawa) oo e, sige nga.

and he went on and on about how i have good production skills, skills behind the cam, cinematog, writing din, etc etc blah blah blah bilog bilog ulo etc.

grabe. naaalala ko lang to ngayon. napaka-surreal ng moment na iyon. i never realized how power-hungry my batchmates were at that time...and even up to now. i remember that recruiting guy when i saw him just trying to figure out why oh why i was having dinner and conversation in a long table where manay lolit solis and presidential son mikey arroyo were also seated, and right across me pa. this was years ago when i worked in a newspaper and we interviewed him after the edsa dos event. he looked like he was intrigued but in a jealous showbiz kind of way, you know? funny. little did he know that had he asked, i would have traded places with him that time, because i have had enough of storm signal number 30s by that time...sa totoo lang. not to mention the pasta of that resto sucked to high heavens. ilang beses pa kong inudyok ni manay na kumain, nahahalata niya atang di ko makain, nahiya lang ako at nagpakalango sa iced tea.

hay naku, i would have never survived that moment if i didn't use the knowledge i learned from mam malou's acting class back then: project! hehe. chos.

These two films will not be screened in the French Spring Film Festival 2007 or in any other venue in the Philippines, except in the UPFI.

The schedule of the program is as follows:

Flying While Muslim shows the faces of racial profiling in the post 9/11 America--and examines the complex intersection of immigration, multiculturalism, and national security. kasalukuyang kaabalahang ka-chenes-an

NOOD KAYO NG LOVELY DAY ngayong sabado sa gmachannel7 10am.

sa clarkfield kami nag-shooting mga some kinda plane thingies na mukhang tutubing malaki (sayang gusto ko syang sakyan, e 3k per hora. next time) at saka yung hot air balloon thingies na gusto ko ring sakyan sana (at ang ganda lang niya sa gabi!) saka some kinda plane and motorcycle race thingie.  pero as usual sa segments lang ito at yung narrative spiels ay iba ang kwento.

hmm, napansin ko lang. eroplano na naman? bat pag may ganitong ep e ako ang natatapat magdirek? hmmm. so bakasyon muna ko next week kasi ang lolo hech ang relyebo duty sa directing. tamang-tama dahil balak kong yariin ang isa pang short film project na di ko alam kung makakahabol...waaaaah. sana naman. di bale, sfx at score na lang to make and marry, interlock and tapos! winner na akesh.

speaking of interlock, naa-ahensiya lingo na naman ako sa kasalukyan kong isang engagement pa. but the thing with working with peeps from the advertising industry is that it's fun kasi kahit ngarag lahat ever sa pag-please ng client, uber-nice ang treatment naman in terms of alaga. as in, three square meals plus water and refreshments in between, and of course the vehicle hatid-sundu chu.

kaya minsan nami-miss kong mag-work sa mainstream e, ahensya man o pelikula. napa-indie-indie na kasi ko ng husto e. hay... pero bet na rin itong paminsanang tv work sa syete. mainstream din ang approach most times even if the attack on the material is quite indie-ish.

been hanging out lately with high school chums naman, for work and play. our barkadamate chielo tied the knot with this egyptian dude from cairo whom she met while working in saudi arabia. ayuz! itu-tour daw niya ko sa cairo at alexandria kapag nagpunta ko roon. yey! sosyal! pyramids at giza here i come. bibili na ko ng tunay na ankh chenes, dahil may isa diyaaaaaan na nalimutan akong ibili nito nung nasa cairo siya hehehe (hint hint).

dami na ring life changes sa high school chums ko. nakakatawa at nakakatuwa lang silang kasama kasi mega-flashback ang mode namin lagi sa pag-reminisce ng mga bagay-bagay. at saka nakakatuwa ring mag-update-an ng current life situations.  katuwa ring makipag-in touch sa ilan sa kanilang nasa ibang bansa through our yahoogroup. sarap ding magbilin ng mga thingies pag may uuwi diyan, lalo na sa decemberrrr (ano j? tuloy ba? siargao surf tayo dude! don't forget my angelina jolie poster!)

shet sayang lang at wala akong photo opsto blog para makita niyo guys. my humble coolpix is busted and is in the nikon hospital as we speak. cost me an arm and half a leg to have it repaired nyetah. kaya kelangang rumaket hehe.  get well soon coolpix. i miss yah. wah.

also currently polishing my travel chenes dahil nalalapit na ang pagpunta ko sa india! yehey! samosa here i come! ano pa ba pagkain don? ah basta yung masarap. solb na ko! may visa and everything na.

nyeta ang dali lang palang kumuha ng visa kung tutuusin. kaya tangina yang US embassy na yan e, kung mang-raket sa atin na 100 dollars ang visa application and then 3-6 months pa ang release chenes or denial ek. e sa indian, 2 days lang me visa na ko, wala pang hassle na consul interview chuva na powertripping tulad sa US. grabe lang! at 2k pesoses laaaaaaaaang! can you beat that! okay, new zealand can. sa new zealand, libre ang tourist visa! yep, nakita ko sa embassy when we last visited the amba there. devah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hay nakuh...

balentayns na rin pala. marami na namang mawawala sa mga kalye at mapupuno na naman ang mga fairs, malls, cinemas, and motels. remember that one valentine years ago when this father robert the running priest dude ran and KNOCKED on motel rooms to remind people daw that sex is sacred at dapat in the context of marriage gawin and all that catholic suffocating jazz. e father, asan ka na ngayon, ha? hehehe.

*

politics is the art of the possible...

...sabi nga sa EVITA. anukabanaman. tignan mo na lang kung sino ang mga tatakbo sa upcoming elections. it's the same old thing; nade-dejavu ako ng 2001 days ko when i first covered ate shawie and ate vi for pinoy times because their hubbies were running as senators for the first time. and look who's filing their candidacies again... chenes chenes chenes... same old same old... hay. my poor country... and manny pacquiao! gudlak sa yo teh!

PAHIRAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. pakopya. :) so far, meron na kong mga george orwell novels and some classics. trying to acquire hp hehe. bet. we can exchange! go go go. e me leaflens at gmail or post here.

now na!
