A sunny afternoon back to my almost-over childhood

Currently riding a GrabCar Innova, and putting down my book, I notice how sunny the sun is, the kind of sunny that's familiar to me since childhood. I know it's scorching, but sunny afternoons like this one become bearable due to the trees in our yard. And under the shadows of the leaves, I find myself cooling off with a book borrowed from the university library. Somewhere else inside the house, the radio is playing a song by Julio Iglesias, a parental favorite, and it seem it's this driver's favorite as well.

And that was when I snapped this photo, to freeze a moment that reminded me of that moment when I was younger, perhaps a freshman at the university or a sophomore, before I turned 18, when my best friend was the library card, and the shade and books took me to imagined worlds I would one day reach in reality or duplicate in my own efforts of being creative.

Funny how a moment could take you back in time, at a time when the world seemed simpler, from the outside looking sunny, even if dark clouds hung over your insides. It makes me glad that I survived, I lived, and now have the capacity to enjoy sunshine the way it should be enjoyed -- with a smile.

It has been one heck of a ride, so far, universe. Thank you.

It’s raining lit!

June is already here, signifying not only the start of the school year but the “official” start of the rainy season. But besides rains, we also have a deluge of literary stuff pouring this month, which began last month and continues to the next.

It’s exciting to know that there are a lot of new books out in the market penned by local authors. A couple of weeks back, scriptwriter extraordinaire Ricky Lee re-launched his old book entitled Si Tatang at Mga Himala ng Ating Panahon which contains a hodgepodge of his writings, notably some short stories, reportage, essays, and even the script of his famous film Himala. This volume gets an updated look but most of its contents remain essentially the same. This was first published in 1988, so imagine it reaching a new generation of audiences this 2009.

On June 15, Mag:Net Katipunan in Quezon City will be the venue of the regularly scheduled Happy Mondays poetry sessions. But that date marks more than the usual literary gathering of friends and literary lovers as it is also the launch date of three new titles from three very diverse authors: Vladimeir Gonzales comes out with his latest book entitled A-Side/B-Side: Ang Mga Piso sa Jukebox ng Buhay Mo which is a collection of essays written in Filipino while Carljoe Javier launches his book entitled And The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth. Both titles are published by Milflores Publishing Inc. Completing the trio is Norman Wilwayco’s launching of his latest novel entitled Gerilyera. This novel was the top winner in the Filipino novel category at the 2008 Carlos Palanca Awards. Congrats Vlad and Iwa!

By the fourth week of June, a book compilation of plays will be launched at the opening of the annual Virgin Labfest at the Cultural Center of the Philippines on June 23. The yearly festival of new plays penned by members of the Writers Bloc Inc. will, once again, showcase edgy new material from contemporary playwrights. The anthology, edited by Rody Vera, will feature about four years’ worth of plays from the four years that the Virgin Labfest has been staged. Now that’s a collection worth having. Call the CCP box office for details.

These are just some of the new titles I encountered lately. But browsing through the collection in bookstores these days, it’s exciting to see that there are more Filipino-penned titles offered and featured by the stores. Those who want to buy a lot of these titles should visit Powerbooks branches as they are having a month-long sale of Philippine publications. Now you know where my money went last weekend. But buying local titles is always worth it, believe me.

So many books, so many plays, so many literary happenings to watch out for and attend. Who says Philippine literature is dead? Long live the word!

Manila Times column for 17 May 2009: "Getting ‘them’ to read ‘us’"

Getting ‘them’ to read ‘us’

If we don’t have access to foreign books, will Filipinos reacquaint themselves with local books and rediscover our own classic and contemporary writers? Well, that remains to be seen.

So much has been written about that “Great Book Blockade” thing about the Bureau of Customs placing tax on imported books (which violates a certain treaty, so it seems, that stipulates books should remain tax-free), presumably the reason why local bookstores haven’t had new titles for months now. Book lovers decried this move, with some citing it as “just another corrupt move of the government.”

If we debate about the corruption practices in this country, it would take months. But let’s stop and see its connection to how we could persuade readers to read local authors instead. If our country imported less foreign titles, will local readers read local titles more? Instead of howling that they want their latest Twilight series book or the latest Dan Brown-penned mystery, could the government perhaps persuade them to take home the latest Anvil, Milfores or UP Press-published anthology of new writings from local authors instead? I don’t know. As Jose Dalisay Jr. once said in a public lecture, “Filipinos love to read; they’re just not reading us.”

In film, we have the Metro Manila Film Festival, which stipulates that at least in ten or so days in December, all films to be shown within Metro Manila should be local films only, banning foreign titles. In a country where ticket sales of Hollywood movies fare better than locally produced ones, that’s a very nice incentive, even if it seems like such a token kind of incentive. Now do we have something similar for authors?

It often saddens me when I visit mainstream bookstores in the metro, as they all have very impressive shelves of a lot of books from most regions of the world. But when I want to look for my own country’s latest titles, it’s sad that the salesperson directs me to a small little nook, corner or wall entitled “Filipiniana” as if I am entering a section of a library where one enters to research for academic purposes only. I wonder when Dalisay, Kerima Polotan, Lakambini Sitoy or Luis Katigbak would share the same sectioning with Salman Rushdie, Chuck Palahniuk or Jeanette Winterson. Am I dreaming? I certainly hope not.

Call me crazy but one day, when I want to buy local titles, I don’t want to go to specialty shops in Manila or specialty bookstores of local presses just to avail of them anymore. I want to buy them in local bookstores where at least half of its titles are local. There are so many Filipinos out there writing in their own languages; where are their books?

Manila Times column for 03 May 2009: "Just how many books have you read, so far?"

Just how many books have you read, so far?

Since I saw Dia Del Libro’s poster with the tagline “Cuantos libros has leĆdo?” last month, I couldn’t stop and think about just how many books have I really read, so far, in my life, as this Spanish tagline so asked.

The event, after all—by Instituto Cervantes and supported by the Spain Tourism Board—is a celebration of people’s love for books. Thus, there was a book sale, literary discussions and even a talk from a visiting literary luminary—Argentinean poet Juan Gelman. The book sale part is always a hit ever since the Spanish cultural institute began conducting this Day of Books event. And we Filipinos love sales of all sorts, even when it came to books. I mean, this is the country where the concept of the Book Sale nook thrived, right? So yes, we love bargains, buying books, and collecting books.

OK, how about the reading part? Now that’s another story.

I found it funny once that some people bought books for the sake of owning them. Seriously. One such person I met said she just kept buying because they were on sale, and they were rare/good/popular titles worth having. When I saw her collection, it was indeed impressive, until I discovered that she has never read most of them, because she was too busy with her work to actually read. Yes, I meet really weird people in Metro Manila.

I’ve also met some people who treat books as “proof” of their intellectual capacity. Seriously. It’s like when others discover them owning certain titles, they automatically get credit for being “so well-read” (read: intellectual). Or at least that’s what others assume of them. A friend even discovered that some of these “page poseurs” only went as far as reading the book’s blurbs so that they’ll know the story’s gist, and fake their way into conversations about the whole thing. Talk about literary loopholes. Yes, there are many weird people in Metro Manila.

As for me, there are titles I don’t mind buying in regular bookstores when they first come out. I also like scouring the shelves of bargain bookshops. And yes, I do read these books I buy. Some I read immediately if I am excited about them—like the newest works of my favorite authors. Some I set aside and find a better time to read them—some books/stories call for that. Or maybe I’m just a moody reader. Nonetheless, the books get read, eventually.

As for the number, I find that it’s so hard to quantify. What I remember are good stories, and not all books have them. So maybe I’ll just leave it at that, for now.

Ricky Lee’s First Novel Overflows with Love

When screen luminary Ricky Lee decided to send off his
much-awaited first novel into the world, how did his friends and
industry colleagues respond?

Piolo Pascual’s previous movie tour commitment was canceled and he
happily got his wish to be part of the program at the launching of
Ricky’s first novel Para kay B (o kung paano dinevastate ng pag-ibig
ang 4 out of 5 sa atin).

Marilou Diaz-Abaya is enthusiastically megging the program, presently
rehearsing with Ricky’s other showbiz friends like Chanda Romero, Gina
Alajar, Cherie Pie Picache, Cesar Montano, Lorna Tolentino, Malu de
Guzman and Eugene Domingo for the star-studded grand launch. Ricky
Davao, Cooky Chua and Skarlet will also grace the occasion with love
songs.

Thirty eight (38) independent filmmakers led by Jeffrey Jeturian, Lav
Diaz, Raya Martin, Dante Mendoza, Ellen Ongkiko, among others, will do
2-5 minute short films based on segments of the novel to make a Para
kay B omnibus film -- for free. The film is slated to come out next
year.

Self-published like his other best-selling book Trip to Quiapo, the
novel overflows with love – both exemplified through the loving support
of Ricky’s friends in all the book’s phases and in its content. It
tells the story of a writer who crafts five love stories as an offering
to his beloved. However, these are not the usual love stories as they
are placed amid the social backdrop of floods, urban crimes, media
manipulation, anti-corruption rallies, extra-judicial killings and gay
pride marches.

The book will be distributed by Anvil Publishing; it will be available
in bookstores starting the first week of December. Among the sponsors
of the show are Artworks, Infinity and Emerald Headway.

The grand book launch will take place on November 30, Sunday, 4 PM at
the UP Bahay ng Alumni, Diliman, Quezon City. Attend this event and get
an autographed copy of the novel by getting your passes/bookmarks now

just enjoying the afternoon...

kahit naiba ang plans ko sa buhay ever. pero as always, happy ako sa changes. dapat lang.

sabi ng stars today:

Taurus Horoscopes

Sunday, Sep 14th, 2008 -- You may have a very specific idea of what you want to do today. You might even think that any deviation from your plan means that you cannot be happy, but nothing could be further from the truth. Your view of reality could actually be a bit distorted now, so don't be too concerned if the day unfolds very differently than you imagined.

o di ba? ayan na nga, relaxed na ko. kahit papaano. ten days to go and it's all over. and i will be reborn anew. at puwede nang rumampang muli.

yebah!

and to further relax me, i read lately. ulit. yay! more pa more pa! more time to read. ah!

i just posted a review of audre lorde's book zami sa multiply. check it out. happy yung book. read!

facebooking

malapit ko na atang iwan ang friendster.

sinusubukan ko itong facebook e. la lang. na-engganyo at naintriga ako finally when i read that article link na pinost ni cai from the intl herald tribune analyzing the changing landscape of people's online community presence and such. basta. maganda siyang article. thought-provoking.

kakatawa kasi when i opened that account, biglang may instant 9 invites na palang naghihintay sa akin. so ayun, naadik ako sa paghanap ng mga friends and colleagues ko doon. at naroon pala halos sila lahat! aha! mabuti naman. konek-konek ulit. hapi.

ehehe yun lang.

*

bumabawi ang mga divas today ha! in fairness. so okay na ko.

o sha. kabyaningan mode muna. see you at the dyke dialogues bukas! i'll be the one wearing yellow. enjoy ang tshirt ko bukas hihihi :P

oo talagang pinaghandaan ang wardrobe! hahaha choz.

intl book fair sa smx this weekend. punta tayo!!! shyet now you know where my money will go. andun ako sunday, pakalat-kalat. kitakits!

aside lang. napapansin niyo ba yung mga waiting sheds sa qc na nagpu-promote ng reading/pagbabasa? natutuwa ako dun. una kong napansin to sa katips papunta peyups. all over na pala. ang kyut. good idea. we should pull the newer generations to read, and the others who are not yet into it. a person who doesn't read books is...well, major turnoff sa akin. kahit sandamakmak ang subscriptions niya sa mga magazines and such. yes, kahit time and newsweek pa yan, ineng, wit. pero sabagay, depende nga yan sa kinds of books na binabasa ng tao. kung puro poplit... sana mahaluan ng ibang klaseng lit din and such. turnoff din kasi kung puro ganun. anyway, too much of something is always not good anyway. teka i'm digressing na ata hehe.

anyway, i mentioned that nga pala sa aking column this week. i mean the book fair.

read here. more of ICW's pistang panitik event here.

wiihiii natutuwa ako as mga recent turn of events sa isang karaketan. yay! la lang : talking to myself. don't mind me.

sa panahon ngayon, kelangan marunong ka kumita ng pera.

just a little before i sleep.

i had a nice day today, despite of the rain. buti na lang at nasa loob ako ng somewhere kapag umuulan at di talaga naaabutan.

feel ko lang mag-recap, bakit ba. di wag ka magbasa. chos.

i always have a hard time looking f
or these darned photo studios kung saan lokasyon ng shoot for mega. punyetang sarah black studio yun dati, naligaw ako. tapos yung kay ronnie salvacion! aaarrrgh ang layo sa sibilisasyon! at iba pa! ewan ko kung bakit ganito. hay.

pero dahil sa fan ako ng research and self-reliance, nakita ko kung paano pumunta doon at natagpuan ko naman, after another ikot of the taxi at pasong tamo...

the interview went well. this time, it was ruffa gutierrez as one of the ten most beautiful issue chene
s sa june (haaay hindi pa pala tapos!). nakakatuwa na siyang kausap ngayon. sensible at smart. until dumating ang editor namin. ignite kikay mode na sila dalawa. pero fun pa rin. humingi pa ng advise ang lola regarding sa isang role offer decision niyang gagawin hehe, bilang dineconstruct ko ang role niya sa DESPERADAS ng bahagya nung chika hehe. e di nag-character breakdown mode ako for her. nakatulong naman daw sa desisyon hihi. we'll see...

gusto ko ang atmosphere sa shoot niya dahil mababait ang mga tao, from the stylist to the venue oic etc. hindi katulad ng ibang house of photogs na hay... taray lang ang mode. tse. ito okay. kaya happy akong umalis doon. wala nga lang bts per dedma na. may iba pa ko lakad e...

since maaga natapos, natuloy ang plano to pass by the inquirer office. moolah collection from a very old gig hehe. :)

at dahil rich na ako ng isang libo at ilang daan hehe, atak sa powerbooks para sa isang post-mother's day gift sa aking jowa. na ang sabi sa akin e...

siya: di naman ako nanay a!
ako: e... nanay din kita e!

chos! haha yeah ganun ka-suryal ang cheka kanena hehe. in between puffs.

i surprised her sa office niya at 3.15pm. sumakto naman sa yosi break so dun ko binigay ang gift.

eto ang ad copy niyan...

pamasahe from marikina to makati on four different public transportation vehicles...237.50 pesos (fx, mrt, taxi, jeep)

stephenie meyer's new york times bestelling novel...309 pesos (after a 10% powerbooks powercard deduction)

the look on my girlfriend's face full of delight as she got the gift and hugged me and gave me a kiss... priceless.

there are some things money can't buy. for everything else... rumaket ka ng husto! hehehehe. choz.

***********************

if the book is good, pahiram ha! hehe :)

there's a fine line between romantic and pakyut hihihi :P and her name is bayli. cheka! :P

my gf said there was this indian restaurant sa kalye where she works, so that's where i decided to have late lunch at 4pm. man, authentic nga siya! post ko pix soon. yummy. may mutton! pero walang lamb! hm. parang mixture ng central at south india e, kasi sa south, kung san maraming tamil, mas vegetarian ang fare nila. carnivorous sa northern parts.

shet na-miss ko india bigla...

after one hour (one hour, mother!), i had early dinner naman with the folks who texted na nasa may mall sila near my place, so that's where i went. kasama nila sina sanse at tito mario from the US. daming balikbayan mode sa family these days hmmm... at dahil sa di nila maubos ang orders, pinaubos sa akin! kinain ko naman! tanga...

*

at since trapped tayo dito sa gabi due to the rain -- at dahil ayoko na ng further carbo loading! -- nag-gym myself akey. 1.5 hours. puwede na. i made friends with a lola (a card-carrying lola, senior citizen ito ati) who wanted to try the lat machine after she saw me using it, after she spent 75 minutes (sabi ng digital counter) sa treadmill. thought balloon niya siguro, "kung kaya ng girl na malaki ang tiyan, matambok ang pwet at malapad ang noo, kaya ko rin!"

tapos eto na. yey!

*

yes i like today. rare na may ganitong days. yung weird na fun na kakaiba na heartwarming na wala lang... labu-labo pero malinaw siya. malinaw na maganda.

basta.

cantor culturati

poonyeeemasss naman itong reading ko kahapon...

"Libay cantor,
When life presents problems, you Bulls can become more determined than ever. Something is coming between you and your goal, and you are not ready to take no for an answer. You may be tempted to give up, but ultimately that's not your style. If you are truly willing to push into new territory, you will overcome whatever is in your way."

afraid.

but before i totally sank into muni-muni mode, biglang bawi ang reading for today...

"Libay cantor,
Your big ideas may need to be set aside temporarily as you deal with all the loose ends that have piled up. Even if you have grand ideas about how much you were going to accomplish today, don't get worked up into a tizzy if you feel that you are falling short of your goals. Instead, set a comfortable pace and just do the best you can."

o sige. sabi mo eh.

not that i believe every single word tarot.com generates for taureans like me, no. wala lang. natutuwa lang akong basahin yung mga ganito kasi, saka it's just strangely comforting that this site's readings all, as in ALL, somehow really say something about moi. kumbaga, minimal ang margin of error chuva. ah basta, ganun. kaya ayun. take it easy daw. o sya sige, sabi mo e.

took it easy talaga today. medyo stressful the past few days e. it started with wondering whether tuloy yung gagawin kong pagtulong sa women's film festival chuva ng upfilmcenter--- oops, UP Film Institute, excusez moi, sa pagsulat ng isang write-up dun sa iranian filmmaker na pupunta dito for the opening. ayun, natuloy nga. kaya kelangan maghabol ng oras para ma-interview siya. nanoon ako ng opening film na...e hehe tinakasan namin nung huli kasi i'm like soooo gutom, saka pare boring waaaaah. someone from UPFI agrees with me! hehehehehehe so ayos lang. pero anyway, hinabol ko rin siya sa filmmaker's forum the following afternoon so ayun. tapos doon ko siya na-interview. her name is pouran derakhshandeh and well, she has beautiful hair if only she removes her hijab. pero we saw that when she was left alone na by the embassy pipol. pero when she was with them pa, protocol kaya taklob. grabeh no? buti na lang walang hijab thingie ang pinoy. naloka siguro ako. well, unless it was in our culture... hm, cultural relativity or cultural diversity? there goes that question again...

oh well. ayun. tuesday 'ata yung opening, wednesday yung filmmaker's forum. tinapos ko article saturday morning na kasi punyemas ang transcribing, i need an interpreter for her interpreter!!!! 'lam mo 'yun!!! this huge hairy dude who obviously luuvs speaking in english pero ang english niya sooo heviiii with zee french accent i have no idea why!!! kakaiba! kaya sumakit ulo ko sa transcribing 'nyemas.

thursday i skipped watching films and returned on friday night. saw several friends there, too. interesting yung film, LAS CARAS DE LA LUNA. winner for someone into feminism chu and filmmaking ek, and being/feeling frustrated by both. **raises hands** basta. i didn't know what exactly i was feeling right after i watched it. the film had lots to say and lots of times, the film was really speaking to me e. grabe, iba ang tama niya. awakening baga, more than a nudge, it was a slap, man... well, it's kinda hard to tell the whole story of that here kaya i'll just leave it at that. anyway, medyo haywire pa utak ko noon kaya hiya naman ako sa friends ko who were waiting pala sa labas after the film. kakain sila sa trellis pero i didn't really feel like hanging out in a big crowd kahit friends ko sila (saka i didn't feel like eating at trellis with all those thoughts in my head, the clatter sound of the place is not conducive to thought processing e. sorry gals for changing my mind all of a sudden ha, after you bunched up in the britney car, este kay hugo pala hehe, to make room for us pa naman...). i had the feeling i needed to process the film's messages. arte ba pakinggan? no, i think those who know me will understand... i hope.... c was with me so i asked her to walk na lang with me as i process it and while we wait for a cab. ayos naman. lakad at muni, gandang kombinasyon. ayan...

it's good to articulate fears. it's also good to have a sounding board who talks some sense back. it's also good to hear reassurances interspersed with reality check lists. i got that that night. thanks very much.

hay... in other consumerist news... i skipped the afternoon movie marathon earlier planned yesterday and opted to go malling. this after i transferred parts of the video of the forum to vcd for pouran. i dropped it at the film center and sped off. decided to get a digicam, once and for all.

punyemas ang hirap pala maglibot with high hopes and medium budget. kaya goodbye canon powershots. i ended with the nikon coolpix. yung 3.2 megapixel lang. kasi nga i decided i really didn't need yet another bulky cam. defeats the purpose of going digital and just having the opportunity to snap away with quality pa rin naman at hindi lang point and shoot eklat. saka nga mas reasonably priced ito e. have to think of that these days.

saka wala namang prublema kasi nikon rin naman e. reputable camera brand. ayos. hapi na lola nyo! hehehe. :) pero di ko pa nase-set-up yung chuva na download sa computer ek kaya saka na lang ako share pictures. i just toyed with its features last night and today. :)

i really felt so exhausted walking around the mall. not exactly a mallrat anymore ano? i guess i really am growing old... hay. kaya naisip ko, since i had the chuvaness to make another purchase that same time, two in one ko na and i got myself a new phone na. dapat birthday gift ko to sa sarili ko e pero well, malapit na talaga bumigay itong isa soon! kaya wala na rin 'ata kuwenta ipamana sa iba. ewan. bahala na.

i got this one. been wanting to get this ever since it was released and saw it displayed sa nokia service center kung saan pinaayos ko itong ire-retire ko nang 6310i.

yeh dis is the exact color i got. wetaminit, how come i don't have earphones???? pouch lang. hm... it's that textile-covered design eklat. i wanted the grey blue sana pero witekla available. saka near phase out model na 'ata ito kaya cheaper (parang yung coolpix i wanted, and the powershot model i wanted, pa-phase out na sila e hehe). saka magaan. i actually compared it dun sa phone ni rosa that i wanted (yung metallic looking foldable model rin) kaya lang mas mahal (at nagoyo ka 'ata drew. 18k lang yun sa megamall. bat 21k sa glorietta?). with 2k+ additional, i just get some high tech thingies i'm sure i ain't gonna use evah and triband system, pero i ain't going to japan or da US naman soon kaya who needs a triband phone? the 6310i i have right now is actually nokia's first triband model na my tatay suggested i get kasi triband. eh di naman ako napunta 'merika o canada kaya wit lang ang triband. nag-tribade lang ako oo nyehehehhehehhhhee pero not travel to countries na may pasaway na mobile phone coding system (bat kasi ayaw sumunod sa asia at europe at rest of da world eh nyemas na G7 countries to) kaya baka sayang lang. pinambili ko na lang ng extra camera accessories ang natipid ko sa phone.

happy na naman ang gadget freak in me hihihi. :) kaya kahit totally exhausted from roaming around megamall trying desperately to look for a brand new cheap canon A95 or A85 and settled na rin for this coolpix...ayun, hapi pekpek pa rin lola nyo. hihi. c+o were hanging out that night to watch spy kaya sumunod ako for a quick nightcap (yeh, the gimlet helped. sarap tulog ko) and to just unwind while listening to live music for a short while (panalo ever talaga yung rendition ng mercedez benz ni lola joplin ha hehehe ayos!). saka i tried out some night shots na rin there. ayun, nakaabot na 'ata ako ng 200 shots kagabi hehehe. sarap ng may digicam!!!! :)

will post pix soon. pramis.

hahaha was just reading fellow writer and co-online workshopper veronica's blog entry, i think i can relate to this:

Anyways, it struck me—in a sort of pathetic way—that I rely on this here activity to lend a bit of structure to my day. Without it, I feel like I'm wearing two different black shoes and walking around with my shirt inside-out. I wasn't willing to admit it before, but it's now painfully clear: I am BlogDependent.

she was speaking about having house renovations and the contractor wanted to send her out of the room na but she was still blogging. hahaha. naku, i can really relate to that! sabi nga ng isa diyan, masipag ako mag-blog; bakit hindi ako magsulat ng kuwento??? opo, nagsusulat na po. eh mas image-conscious ang lola mo these days e kaya mas nagti-tripping in da neighborhood with da coolpix. hihi. :) siguro nagre-rebel ang mind ko sa paglabas ng salita kaya imahe ang hinahanap. info overload sometimes does that to me. eh with the kind of work i'm doing these past few months di ba, can yu bleym meeeeh? hay... need to get out of da city sheeet. pero wit, i've decided not to. veg out na lang ako sa holy week to catch up with my watching movie requirements (and with the recent purchases, 'ala na pang-trip). kaya have to dvd-hunt soon. pagbalik ni len from nooyawk, ayain ko sha. naku, musta na kaya siya dun with all the lolas around? hm. hope she can also have fun later when the csw is over.

looks so boring in da UN, man. i hope len is alright. saka nyemas na US yan ha, nangkukuyog na naman ang mga fotah...

oh btw the reason why i chose megamall to be the venue for unleashing gadget freak-me is to pick up this freaking long overdue reserved book THE HOURS. nyemas nanalo na't lahat sa oscars, ngayon lang dumating. after 2 years. 2 years, mother? mother, what about our other dyuuuuutieeees. ngyak, tapos ang cover pa yung movie poster na. kaya pala, ginawa munang pang movie/tv tie-in section ang ponyeta bago nila nireprint ulit... parang yung CONTACT ni carl sagan pero yun, hapi ako na si jodie foster my love ang nasa cover.

speaking of books, i just finished this one days ago...

gusto ko sha. one review said it was a "fictional memoir." oks, no? i think i like that. hm.. it's a guy author writing about a woman, half-american half-lebanese ang bida. galing ng structure kahit di ganun ka-spectacular yung story. pero keri pa rin, engaging kasi nga siguro of the structure. saka ngayon lang 'ata ako nakabasa ng lebanese-highlighted fiction (hm teka, ano ba si rushdie? sheet short term memory na akesh). i always like form experimentations sa fiction kasi i want to learn lagi how to tell stories in new ways. metafiction chuva, or basta going beyond postmodernism siguro. kaya when i browsed through THE HOURS, mukhang keri din ang structure niya. hm, simulan ko na ba to? i have yet to get over picturing the characters as meryl streep, julianne moore and nicole kidman. hm. niwey, thanks drew for lending the divine one. happy sha. soli ko when i finish the ellen vcds after holy week.

ala-una na pala. sige tulog na muna ko. may 10a staffmeet nga pala. hay.

later.
