Pulse of the populace pumps the pen

I believe writers—and those working in some form of media or other—should always be in touch with today’s trends, developments and advancements, even those that happen or take place outside of their milieus. The pulse of the populace will always influence what happens next in our society.

In the past months, I interacted with different individuals who have established some form of business addressing communication needs of people. There was one group of friends who ventured into graphics design while one was starting up as a video postproduction group. There was another individual who wanted to focus on documentary filmmaking while another pair of filmmakers consulted me regarding establishing their own video production outfit.

Regardless of their group/company’s focus and expertise, I only had one advice to all of them: be in touch with your audience. That entails studying their target market’s behavior, habits (especially their buying habits, if one is into some form of advertising/PR line), even dreams, aspirations in life and other connected things.

We in the media should always be in touch with our specific medium, and study others as well. For instance, creative film people in big studios always get their pulse via television, and they utilize that TV-film connection to widen their audience reach. Traditional print media practitioners have been keeping themselves up-to-date by going into a related field—online media. And it’s no secret that those in the advertising world study almost all aspects of their society just to be in touch with how people live their lives.

Yet some media practitioners neglect this “intersectionality” study/approach and comfortably (or stubbornly) stick to what they know and what they are familiar with. That’s the right approach— for failure. For instance, I was surprised when one team said they do not watch ads aired on local television yet their production work is geared towards advertising to people who watch local television. How strange is that? A cultural worker cannot be disconnected with the culture where his or her work evolves and revolves.

Writers in the media/arts field should think about this “intersectionality” and pulse most times. It also helps if literary writers could look into these things as well. These are the things that are “written in” by writers who, basically, should really be keen observers of life.

But with the matter of being consumed by the so-called “audience impact” of one’s work, that’s another matter altogether. We’ll discuss that next time.

surrvey for UPFI students: film electives

The UPFI Academic Division is looking into offering another elective film course this second sem. We would like to know if there is enough demand for it to get opened.

The elective proposed is the new Film 159 Film Production Management, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday 8:30-11:30am. Ms. Boots Anson Roa will handle this course if opened.

If you already took Film 183 Film Seminar with the topic Production Management before (especially under Ms. Roa also), you are not eligible to enroll in Film 159 anymore (redundancy).

We need at least 10 enrollees to have this course opened.

We hope to hear from you. Thanks.

what part of "leave me alone" can't you understand?

phone-in question from the stars.

sige, i'm listening.

The Relationship Anthology re-vibe

It’s no secret that writers pull bits and pieces of their lives and use that information as jumping off points to create something bigger, grander and oftentimes more poignant literary works than their original tidbit inspirations. But what if the literary work one was asked to write was about the life of the writer per se, particularly one important aspect of that life?

In January, Linda Panlilio, a former creative writing schoolmate, asked me to contribute a nonfiction piece for another broadsheet’s Valentine’s Day special section focusing on different types of relationships. She was tasked to be this special section’s editor. Being the “default local lesbian literary writer” of late, I have always been invited to submit works on lesbian lives —which I am just too happy to oblige. I wrote about my personal transitions from relationship to relationship, formulating a set of criteria in the end as to what I finally want out of a relationship with a woman. It ended with a happy note that I found those criteria in the person I was with at that time.

The special section was a hit. Panlilio said Karina Bolasco of Anvil Publishing was interested to do a book version, and asked us to expand on our original articles, which we did. However, when it was time for me to revise my material, I didn’t feel up to it. That was around June, the time when I was feeling that something was wrong in my relationship. Perhaps that was a sign given by my literary goddesses to be wary of what was to come in my love life—a heartbreak in August. As I was reeling from the break-up experience, I just left the fate of my unrevised essay to the hands of Panlilio and Bolasco, thinking that it was okay if they rejected it or not. Luckily, they didn’t.

Two months after the break-up, I suddenly find myself back in a relationship with someone new—a wonderful girl named Phia—plus I receive an announcement that the anthology is now called Belonging: Stories of Relationships to be launched on October 29 at Powerbooks Greenbelt 4 around 6 p.m.

I can’t even begin to count the dramatic ironies that will happen that day, as I will attend the launch with a new girlfriend to receive my copy featuring an old one.

Life is full of ironies, indeed.

LDFG vs. EVIL REFLECTION

Airing on October 25, 2008

Saturday, 9:30 a.m.

Kalabasa

At the Institute of Plant Breeding in UP Los Baños, Gabby discovers one important thing about his favorite squash: IT’S NOT A VEGETABLE, BUT A FRUIT! In his visit to the farm, he also learns more about the different kinds of squash and finds out that mouth-watering desserts could be prepared by just using this fleshy fruit. He gets to taste squash-flavored Pinoy sweets like maha blanca and kutsinta!

Gabby also learns how to make his own Jack-o-Lantern with the help of Mr. Rex Puentespina, using gigantic squash specially cultivated for this purpose. Jack-O-Lanterns are believed to repel bad spirits through the light it emits. Gabby tests his creative skills with Kuya Rex and carves out one big Jack-O- Lantern from a very plump pumpkin!

Halloween preparations

Halloween wouldn’t be complete without scary masks! To make her Halloween experience really scary, Ate Love Añover visits the studio of prosthetics expert Adrian Batoctoy and tries out his masks and prosthetic make-ups! With Kuya Adrian’s expertise, Love transforms herself into a terrifying zombie!

What is Halloween without the yummy Halloween food? With the help of Chef Mia Yan, host Bea Binene prepares cute Halloween treats like caramel apples, devilish eggs, and skull chocolate lollipops! They may look scary, but they’re definitely yummy!

LDFG vs. Evil Reflection

As the LD Force’s powers grow stronger, Raijin the Lord of Lightning continues to find ways to destroy them! This time, his evil spirit minion possesses an old mirror, and anyone who uses this evil mirror will be attacked by his own evil reflection!

What happens to the Guardians if Bea, Jacob, and Gabby are victimized by this evil mirror? Will Love be able to save them from the attacks of their own evil reflection? Find out this Saturday in Lovely Day Force of the Guardians, now airing at 9:30 in the morning on GMA-7.

Kalabasa

Sa Institute of Plant Breeding sa UP Los Baños, isang bagay ang matutuklasan ni Gabby tungkol sa kalabasa: isa pala itong… PRUTAS!

LDFG vs. Evil Reflection

Abangan sa Lovely Day Force of the Guardians, ngayong Sabado, 9:30 ng umaga sa GMA-7.

ang saya-saya!

it's just funny how i am tasked to direct horror-focused episodes when in fact, i hate watching horror stuff, especially movies. my boss anne was able to articulate why earlier, during the shiftees exam chitchat we had. interesting ang theory niya. pag over-the-top horror daw, i can handle it because i know it's detached from reality ek, pero pag medyo psychological ang effect, di ko daw keri kasi it sticks in my psyche or something like that. i revealed kasi how i hate scary movies pero my favorite holiday is the american halloween. weird.

but i guess that's why i'm kinda effective as a horror director. i know how it is to get scared, and i know what scares the bejeezus out of peeps, so i know how to execute "scary." well, that's my theory. or see the ratings na lang ng eps na nadidirek ko heheh (uy, nagre-rate siya! or at least, lampaso kalaban pag horror-horror heheh).

pero kung horror lang naman, horror nga yung book cover ng anthology hahaha! malay ko bang gagamitin nila yung picture! shyet. zoom in on the righthand bottom corner to see what i'm talking about.

ewan.

i've half a mind not to promote the anthology, and the other half contemplates on posting the actual essay included in the book here in this blog, para wag na kayong bumili ng book hehe. this is the longer version of that inquirer article which came out last february.

yahyahyahyahyah. wotevah.

ano sa tingin niyo?

madali akong kausap.

it was worth it...

to rush pending work from saturday to wednesday to clear off the next five days for a rush vacation...

to put off more work for the next week to relax somewhere far from the workahellic places...

to cavort with the sun, the sand and the sea with kindred spirits an
d old souls...

to forget that i have to care for my liver and lungs to accommodate some missed vices...

to forget that i live in a polluted metro and breathe the fresh sea breeze to re-energize myself for more...

to get sunburned at the wrong places, to take some skin pain as souvenir along with the dirty laundry and happy memories...

and to lock souls with my soulmate in a haven where no one bothered us...

if only for this moment, and shot:

thanks sa photo kuya x. :P

ulitin natin 'to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anthology as the next best thing

Literary writers who haven’t had the chance to publish their own book can count on an anthology as the next best thing. An anthology is a book composed of material written by different authors. Usually, there is one (sometimes two or three, depending on the setup) editor who takes charge in calling for manuscripts, selecting entries, editing them (if needed and in accordance with the publisher’s rules) and informing authors about the selection.

Publishers usually select editors who are familiar with the genre or subject matter of the anthology. Each anthology is different. Some go with a thematic framework (e.g. works about heartache, works by gay and lesbian writers), some follow a literary format (e.g. poetry in Filipino only, sudden fiction stories only), while some are hybrid mixtures (e.g. collection of stories and poems, collection of fiction and nonfiction).

Depending on the publisher’s guidelines, all authors ideally get a fair share of royalties for copies sold. Sometimes authors get paid an honorarium for their selected work. But most times, all authors get is the token one or two free copies of the anthology—and the extra credit in their résumé.

Well, the business side of publication is the downside of being anthologized. But being artists first and foremost, writers most times don’t really care about royalties. What’s more important is being included in a collection with an impressive lineup of writers and a very credible editor and reputable publishing house and, of course, having one’s work printed and sold in bookstores.

It’s also fun when an anthology is being launched. During the event, a writer could hobnob with other writers included in the anthology. What’s nice about this is that even newer writers could meet and interact with the veterans. Sometimes, the writers have their copies signed by the other writers, making their freebie book copy a collection of writers’ signatures.

As a newbie literary writer in the late 1990s, it was exciting for me to experience being anthologized for the first time. It was exciting to see my work published in book form; never mind if the whole book wasn’t mine. Being published was happy enough. Most times, especially if the publisher and the editors are “literary big-shots,” I feel proud and honored that they saw merit in my work to be included in their anthology.

So to young and new writers out there, don’t be disheartened if you don’t have your own book yet. Try being anthologized first. Sometimes, this is much more fun—and humbling.

gestating/gestalting

are the sum of my parts similar to the sum of your parts?

pieces of my life seem to be mismatching themselves and criss-crossing their paths without my permission, or manifesting themselves up from the murky swamps where i long buried some of them. why is that so?

in the end, di na naman kinaya

wish me luck.

the last time i got sick was sometime in june, i think, the more serious one in january, w
here i was bedridden for 3 days straight with flu and colds, and 3 more just to rest and recuperate. thank goodness last wednesday the day-old fever broke near midnight, allowing me to have enough power to go to the thesis defense session yesterday. i think the cine adarna cold got to me, hence the throat problem.

yet in spite of the hellish physical feelings, how heartwarming it is to receive feelings of support from friends who care enough to symphatize with sick ol' me, through a facebook joke ("wawa ka naman, di ka makakagala :)") or well-wishing ("get well soon!"), texts from students ("get well soon, ma'am libay, hearts hearts!"), call ("gusto mo ng oregano?") or texts from kindred spirits ("pagaling ka. c u tom.") and a visit from my mum ("may dala akong mefenamic").

don't get me wrong. all of these well-wishers i welcome in my heart, but the most special chamber is reserved for the one who said "i would love to care for you as long as i'm living."

(nagpapatimpla
ng kape sa akin)
ako: may sakit ako e.

(tonong inis)
ako: sinat, sinusitis. mina-migraine ako kanina. nahihilo ako.

niya ako. kahit matanda na daw ako. sabi ng facebook status niya "goldfish wants you to be her 1st and last person that she could spend her lifetime with..." basta parang ganun.

kasi nga, nung nalaman niyang may sakit ako, di niya alintana kung matagtag siya sa biyahe dahil galing siya malayo. mas gusto niyang puntahan ako at siguraduhing magaling na ako, at aalagaan niya ako para gumaling.

oo kuya, may ganun.

mega-check. super mega-check.
to the highest level. bisyo na 'to.

2. dapat hindi siya praning

check na check.

3. dapat out siya

in short, yes, alam ng parents, siblings, friends. and the environment. plus the sky. and the beach. up next, the weather report.

5. dapat hindi siya classist matapobre freak kundi patient and tolerant of differences

ten times over. check na check. it goes without saying.

9. dapat matino at masarap kausap

11. dapat she is a woman of her word. at
walang third party. kahit ex-turned-friend pa man niya yun.

and yes, she definitely is. sinipot ako e, hindi ba? that in itself is commitment. baby steps, baby steps...

"walang indigo" sabi niya.

tinanong din sa akin ng isang kaibigan--nalimutan ko na kung sino--kung what made me do it. why did i let myself fall again daw. simple lang. life's too short to have what ifs and regrets. i'd rather grab the chance to enjoy something i see is worthwhile and hey, take the plunge and see where the flow takes me. and her.

[emphasis hers]. :)

QC spaces as literary hubs

With literary readings becoming a popular event here in the metro, especially in Quezon City, more and more establishments have been adjusting to fit this need.

One popular venue for years now is Conspiracy Garden Café and Restaurant in Visayas Avenue. Mostly populated by NGO folks and alternative music performers and fans, Conspiracy was able to establish itself as another venue for writers who want to hold a literary event. Before the musical gigs around 9pm, the enclosed inner space could be used for book launches, poetry readings and other literary activities. Dubbed as Conspiwriter’s Night, every Tuesday’s 7 to 9 pm block is an open venue for such events.

It’s always a hoot organizing literary events in this place. I once participated in a gay writer friend’s event called Halu-Halo Night sa Conspiracy that was basically just an excuse for us writer friends to get together and read our works while downing our preferred beverage of choice (and for most writers, it’s usually beer).

Inspired by that event, he once again organized another one months later and got me and another gay friend to organize an LGBT Night at Conspiracy. Since the place is a convenient one to access for most of us, the place was jam-packed with different performers and literary readers (as well as audience members) from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

For months now, another venue has been adjusting to this literary need—Mag:Net Gallery in Katipunan Avenue. Originally a restaurant and intimate/cozy musical performance space with an art gallery and magazine store, this branch now schedules literary events every Monday, also within the 7 to 9 p.m. block (before the 9 p.m. musical gigs). With its proximity to the Diliman area schools like UP, Ateneo and Miriam College, more students are accessing this space along with literary writers and enthusiasts.

On Monday, October 13, Mag:Net will be featuring Ang Ladlad LGBT Lit Night spearheaded by Ang Ladlad Partylist’s Danton Remoto, also professor at the Ateneo. He will be joined by other poetry readers, fellow professors Neil Garcia and Ronald Baytan. This scribe will also read a short prose work. An open mic session will follow wherein those who want to read something can freely go onstage.

So who says literature should remain at the confines of one’s library or home? Go out and enjoy these literary events in these cool and accommodating literary hubs. We’ll feature more next time.

dirty looks
keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-rowk!

hihihi :P

*

the semestral Film 200 thesis defense went well yesterday. no serious bloodshed, no egotistical blurt-outs (from both sides), and lots of camaraderie (and hugging!) before, during and especially after the sessions. times like these lang kasi nagkakasalamuha ng bonggang-bongga na opisyal-pero-di-talaga-formal-feel-dahil-cool-ang-upfi-faculty ang mga repapiks sa upfi.

saya! except for doc nic who went to the hospital for check-ups (shyet dami rin namin nagkasakit before the event, lalo na ko!), everyone, as in everyone lang talaga ha, was in attendance. ayuz!

hay. well, actually, sick pa rin ako ng onti during the defense pero siyempre kelangang i-go ng powerz ko ang umapir sa peyups for this shebangzhu, dahil ito ang main event ng aking pinangangalagaang division. if only for ate doray's kitchen treats during lunchtime hihihi. yes, aside from films, we film faculty lurrrv food! so happy yun hihi :)

*

and in other news na good, bumalik na si tita dolly, ang aming admin finance guru sa fi! wheeee! she had cancer kasi at nagpa-treatment siya, but she bounced back, strongwilled woman that she is, kinaya ng powerz niya. yehey! papa-welcome back luncheon kami for her. yes, minsan, fair si lord.

o sha, kape muna.

quote of the weekend

"nakakapagpabago ka ng isip"

true enough.

works for me, too.

sabi kasi ng stars nung sabado:

Taurus Horoscopes

(Apr 20 - May 20)

Saturday, Oct 4th, 2008 -- Your current work requires you to work closely with colleagues, even if you prefer to be by yourself. Withdrawing is not an option because everyone has too much at stake to let you be too independent. Although it might not be easy, relationships have much to teach you. Make a commitment to express your feelings and then stay with the discussion no matter how uncomfortable it gets.

at nung linggo:

Taurus Horoscopes

(Apr 20 - May 20)

Sunday, Oct 5th, 2008 -- Your key planet Venus is luring you into some fairly intense emotional waters now and it may take a lot of concentration

to respond to the current circumstances. You might prefer a more easygoing approach, but you cannot deny the very real feelings of your friend, partner or co-worker. Fortunately, your high idealism can encourage others to rise above any negativity and turn a difficult situation into a positive one.

so baka kelangang makinig.

ng bonggang-bongga.

okay sige. i'm all ears.

02 October 2008

and i know it's not just procrastination

PANOORIN SA SABADO: motorcyclist from hell, literal

LOVELY DAY
Force of the Guardians

Saturday 9:30-10am

GMA-7

"SPEED DEMON KNIGHT " episode
Airing on October 4, 2008
Saturday, 9:30 a.m.

Speed stacking

Host Bea Binene witnesses a competition of wit and speed in a Speed Stacking event! Here, kids will race to complete cycles of stacking cups in a matter of seconds. Speed Stacking was invented by American Professor Wayne Godinet to amuse his students during class. Now, it has become a rising fad, and one of its avid fans in the Philippines is 10-year old Joshua Calidades, who can stack cups in under 10 seconds!

Meanwhile in a Rubik’s Cube-solving event, Bea meets kids who have the extraordinary talent of completing a Rubik’s cube! A Rubik’s cube is a mechanical cube puzzle that has its faces covered with 9-solid colored stickers. It uses a pivot mechanism that allows players to turn the faces independently and make them complete a solid color. Rubik’s cube has become so popular in the Philippines that even kids became avid fans like 6-year old JR Simbulan, who can complete the cube in less than a minute!

Karting

Meanwhile host Jacob Raterta gets dirty on the road as he attends a karting competition. Here, he meets champion racer Milo Rivera, who became champion at the Asian Karting Open at the age of thirteen! Through the help of Pia Boren, a racer and instructor from the Tuason Racing Team, Jacob gets to try karting.

In his visit to Richard Pacheco’s house, Jacob also finds out that cool race cars aren’t only found on the race track. Because Richard has a collection of more than sixty F1 model cars in his home and some of these models cost more than 10 thousand pesos! Part of his prized collection is a model of F1 idol Michael Schumacher and his winning Ferrari.

LDFG vs. Speed Demon Knight

Speed Demon Knight is a very powerful monster who was formed from the negative energies of car accidents and road mishaps. Using his flaming motorcycle with Demonic Strength and Demonic Speed, he aims to wreak more havoc on the streets! His speed is unbeatable, frightening and beating anyone who would dare to race with this him.

But this time, he’s the one making the challenge and takes the LD Force to a dangerous race! How will the LD Force outsmart and beat Speed Demon Knight? Can the power of the Guardians match Speed Demon Knight’s strength and speed?

gabby transforms into a motorcycle in this ep,

hence the need for the chroma green screen

more facebooking: status messaging

sana maka-join join ang more more of us. taraletzzzzzzzzzzz!

-------------------------

Dear all,

The Participation Committee for this year's Manila Pride Season and Pride March, lead and organized by Task Force Pride (TFP) Philippines, is inviting more volunteers and members to be part of the Committee.

One of, if not the, main project and target of the said committee is to expand the annual Pride March participants from an annual mean of 500 (probably less) persons to a 300% increase and a 2,000 happy and rainbow bunch of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities--lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, heterosexuals, asexuals, pansexuals, queers, intersexed, non-identifiers etc--and most of all living, loving, and human rights- and equal rights-believing individuals.

The Participation Committee has even gone farther by identifying 2,000 as the base number and targetting more than that number. If that happens, this year's march will not only be the 10th year anniversary celebration of Task Force Pride but would also be the biggest and most diversely participated Pride March in Philippine history.

When is the most convenient day and time for you to meet as a Committee (to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate our projects and activities as a committee)?".

If you have more questions about the Participation Committee, please feel free to email Bruce (bruce.amoroto@gmail.com), Yffar (raff_aquino@yahoo.com.ph) or Anne (annemariemlim@gmail.com).

Diversely and equally yours,

Bruce
2008 Participation Committee Head
