Adbusters Newsletter #35: Reclaim the Season

Dear Jammers and Cultural Creatives,

If you celebrate Christmas, you likely don't need any reminders that it's just around the corner. You are also probably well aware of how stressed-out, hyped-up, dumbed-down, and just downright expensive the "holidays" have become. Nevertheless, we thought we'd take a moment to remind you that it doesn't really need to be this way.

All it takes is a few simple changes -- less presents, less decorations, shorter "to-do" lists, and a wee bit more good old-fashioned craftiness -- to bring a new rhythm, purpose and spirit to one of the world's chief cultural rituals, now warped beyond recognition. Consider it a long-term cultural project for the those seeking a little consumer sanity, a way to rescue our shared traditions from corporate interests and those who confuse big sales with real cultural meaning.

Of course, re-inventing tradition is not the type of thing that happens overnight. But that doesn't mean we can't start right away. If you need a bit of inspiration, check out our new BNXmas headquarters at www.adbusters.org. We have ideas for holiday actions like "The Jesus Walk," links to extensive web resources, plus downloadable posters, cards, and gift exemption vouchers to give to your friends and family.

Like-minded people worldwide have already posted their plans for a less materialist, more meaningful holiday. Once you've had a chance to see what everyone else is up to, go ahead and share your own thoughts and plans via the web form. And if you have spare second during this busy time of year, be sure to forward this year's press release (below) to your local media and absolutely anyone else that might be interested in what we're trying to accomplish.

Good luck and all the best in the new year.

Cheers,

The BNXmas Team

P.S. Email us at with your BNXmas posters and photos, and we'll try our best to feature them on the site.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAVE LESS, LIVE MORE: BUY NOTHING CHRISTMAS

RECLAIMING THE SEASON: Those of us who shiver at the thought of hour-long line-ups and $5 gift tags finally have something to rejoice about over the holidays: fed-up citizens and social activists from across the world are inviting everyone to take part in Buy Nothing Christmas.

Inspired by the international successes of Buy Nothing Day, and disgusted with the personal debt, spiritual emptiness, and ecological damage that the holiday season now entails, writers and activists began to heavily promote the idea of a downshifted Christmas in the late nineties. Since then, the idea has been taken up by individuals, community groups, churches, and schools in at least a dozen countries, with strongest support in Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Despite the name, the Buy Nothing Christmas campaign is not really about refusing to spend a dime over the holiday season. It’s about taking a deep breath and deciding to opt out of the hype, the overcrowded malls, and the stressful to-do lists. It’s about reminding ourselves to really think about what we are buying, why we are buying it, and whether we really need it at all.

“First and foremost, it’s about restoring authenticity to one of the world’s great religious and secular traditions,” said Kalle Lasn, editor-in-chief of Adbusters magazine and long-time advocate of holiday restraint. “Christmas has been warped beyond recognition by commercial forces. It’s about time we took it back.”

Most participants will still exchange gifts, but will opt for recycled, homemade, locally produced, or fair-trade items. Some will excuse themselves from gift-giving altogether, and focus instead on valuable time with family and friends, on charitable works, and on rediscovering older, non-commercial holiday traditions as they also invent a few new ones.

Throughout the month of December, activism-minded participants will be taking two of these new traditions to their local malls and commercial districts. Groups of meditating Santas – dubbed “Zenta Clauses” – are offering stressed-out shoppers free soup, coffee, and a place to rest their aching feet as they take a break from buying. This year, they will be joined for the first time by slow-moving activists in robes and Jesus masks, who will be asking their fellow shoppers one all-important question: “What would Jesus buy?”

emphasis mine.

for the longest time, i've been searching for ways on how to put my dislike for this season. the points raised above hit it on the spot, so to speak.  saka gusto ko yung graphics work nila, as always hehe.

well, eto na naman ang inyong friendly neighborhood scrooge speaking. well, i can forgive revelers of this holiday kasi there are a few payoffs i like, like they give gifts even if it's not your birthday and you're not expecting to get any from these certain people, and then there are parties with nice food and drinks where you can chat a bit with people you like to chat with and ignore the ones you dislike -- and win something in a raffle or two along the way.

the last week of classes saw two nice parties in school. the annual "bakit may bayad ang attendance" CMC xmas party had the always absent monbau as the xmas committee chair who thought up a "CMC idol" magic sing contest. well, syempre hands down dapat na nanalo doon ay si mam gigi of upfi dahil hello siya ang ms. savarin lounge singer of the century ano. pero syempre the crowd was all mass-oriented chenelyn and gave it to some dude from admin. and hm, kumakanta pala si atty marichu ng, er, mandy moore songs! at least young ang heart ang lolah. ay, as an aside, habang kumakanta pala ng "paper roses" si mam g ay nag-cage dancing ek kami sa gilid, pero syempre dahil mas ako ang nakatayo, nakita ako and now, i am officially known in the cmc world as "the cage dancer." bow.

sarap lang ng party dahil may nag-order ng pritchon, yung pritong lechon (hm, come to think of it, hindi ba double deads na ang style na ito? but i digress). actually, yun lang ang sinigaw ng crowd "raffle at kainan nah!" in unison ever. e well, they can't go wrong with that. two of my favorite things as a taurus gel: eating good food and having nice thingies.

well, sulit naman ang payment ko kasi nanalo ako sa raffle hehe. ewan ko ba pero madalas e swerte ako sa mga raffle-raffle na yan. i won an electric fan. later, mam gigi also won an electric fan. and then i overheard doc nic saying "eh kasi mahahangin daw tayong mga taga-film! hahahah!" hahahah true ka jan lola. funny yun ever. okei, kalimutan muna ang semi-vegetarian fare para sa pritchon. masarap sha in fairnez.

tapos the day after that, upfi xmas party naman. actually it's more of a xmas lunch which was started last year by anne our insti director. tama nga naman para meron ka pang hapon at gabi to digest the food. hay to die for ang handa, ang isa sa paborito kong lengua!!!! er, semi-vegemode aside na naman, nilafesh ko lang itich sobrah. dedma sa ibang handa. hay nakuh i can focus that way about food ya know. sobra lang... pero after da eating binge, tangna lumobo na naman ang di dapat lumobo sa akin kaya waaah back to kambing mode na naman ako at vegetarian forever, which means tambay na naman ako ng likha diwa. sayang, ang layo na kasi ng greens sa aking lugar eh. mas bet ko pa naman yun kesa sa likha.. not so much because of the food but because of some past history my former org had with da place. sabi nga ni frozone sa episode kahapon, da nerrrrrrv.

speaking of, ANYBODY KNOW OF ANY VEGETARIAN/SEMI-VEGETARIAN EATING PLACES IN THE METRO, QC AREA PREFERABLY?  E ME LEAFLENS AT GMAIL PO.

as for the gifts, the usual suspects brought their goodie bags and handed the people there some give-aways. mukhang poor lang yata this year dahil unlike last year, walang raffle gifts chuva. but i don't really mind.

hm, ano pa ba ginawa namin? wala, as usual, like most pinoys, nag-magic singing na naman sila dun while i just stuck to cage dancing. kaya relate ako kay HAPPY FEET, e, kasi i can't sing in a country full of songers but i can dance the heck out of them hehe. sayawan na lang! ano!

tapos nun ngang sabado of that week, LOVELY DAY xmas party naman dun sa wonder island resort sa laguna kung saan nag-shoot ng very first ep for next year kami. it was supposed to be an overnight thing pero marami ring umuwi at sumama na ko (see previous post about this na lang), but not after partaking of the very inviting hotsprings pools there and the "yehey friendly sa semi-vegemode" fudams nung gabi like inihaw na talong, fish and chicken. saraf! nagkaroon tuloy ako ng one-week craving sa bangus belly. buti na lang the neighborhood carinderia carries that in their inihaw fare -- at mas mura pa sa crispy bangus belly ng jollibee na harang naman ang portion kung mega-tomjones ka.

i guess that's the last xmas party i'll be attending this year. pasko na bukas e so wa na no. new year party? nah, pagod na kong pag-party ng talagang party you know what i mean? mukhang na-reorient at na-reprogram ko na talaga ang lifestyle mode ko. buti naman. well, nakatulong ang walang alak sa sistema hehe. hay...

so quiet mode lang ngayon. saka i've been enjoying talking really long walks lately while plugged in to some upbeat music. sabi nga ng friend ko, may sarili akong mundo in doing that. i guess that's what i'm really trying to achieve/create/enhance. nakakasawa na kasi itong mundong ito minsan e. we need an alternative planet. hm, i just wish i wasn't nearly flat footed. argh. oh well. the new shoes will do the trick. yea yea did some shopping na rin pero long overdue naman ito, at saka necessity, not luxury. iba yun e. saka maraming sale this time of year kaya take advantage na diba? kaya ang saya!

so, as the zen santa would say...

HOPPY HOLEYDAZE, PLANET!

17 December 2006

do you hear what i hear? i thought not + pride photos galore!

i like my horoscope for yesterday. so apt:

Everyone may be more emotional than you today, but don't let their dramas destabilize your world. Your feelings are well-grounded now, so listen attentively to what others say without fear of being swept up into their tumultuous storms. No matter what you encounter, hold on tightly to anything that increases your overall security.

yesterday was saturday and the very last day of shooting LOVELY DAY narrative spiels for the year. we went to this island about 10 minutes away from the calamba pier for the shoot and after that, the show's own version of their christmas party. i didn't stick around for the party and went ahead with the group who also had to leave that night. not that i want to be branded as an aloof director -- on the contrary, gustong-gusto kong uminom kasi smooth yung flavored lambanog na dala ni ace cameraman billyboy namin. delish. kaya lang nga, after discovering this liver problem of mine, i shunned liquor muna in my life. kaya bad trip. so if i stay there, mate-tempt akong uminom talaga. hotsprings resort pa naman yun.

the thing with me is medyo hindi ko na trip mag-hang out sa mga groups of people na hindi ko naman talaga katsokaran ng malaliman. lam mo yun? hindi na kasi ako ganun e. siguro after hitting 30 and after having been around lots of diverse groups of people (and i do mean LOTS, man, from showbiz old-timers and newbie artistas to literary feelingeros and writing luminaries, from career academicians and advocate students to cosmopolitanized and proudly heritaged indigenous peoples, from down to earth military and hambog political personalities to fun-loving underground people, from sosyalista hacienderos/deras to urban poor residents, from clean and dirty media practitioners to international/multinational advocates and cultural personalities, and more) talagang minsan e hahanapin mo yung mga ka-close mo lang o yung mga talagang ka-wavelength mo na usually e you share lots of things in common talaga, na kahit papaano e talagang kilala ka. and the biggest common denominator na hinahanap ko ay yung advocacy, yung genuine respect for it and general recognition for it, lalo na sa kababaihan at ka-LGBT-han. sadly, sa karamihan ng mainstream media outfits and groups na napupuntahan ko, wala nito. bibihira, few and far between. isa na rin ito sa mga reasons kung bakit di ko feel mag-venture out with people i don't share my personal life with and have relationships with them on a professional level only. parang sa school sa UPFI. ganun din. kaya i want to kick back and relax with like-minded individuals who know what i'm about and who respect that by being nice and kind and not insensitive.

kung sinabi ni gandhi na "be the change you wish to see in the world" e i'm doing that naman in my own capacity in my line of work. pero kung talagang sobra na ang sexism at homophobia sa paligid ko, as an advocate, i know when to recognize that a situation is a "lost cause" category na or not. in this case, i'd rather deal with it the best way i can -- hence the distance, and the professional level dealings. c'est tout. tricky talaga to handle stuff like this. naturingan kang lesbiyana at peminista, naku, may certain alerts na silang nire-raise sa kani-kanilang mga isip at kampo. nalulungkot lang ako kasi kadalasan, di nakikita ng karamihan sa mga mainstream people na ito na napaka-potent ng kinabibilangan nilang industriya at ang change na sinasabi ni gandhi ay puwede nilang maisubo sa mga tao nang walang kahirap-hirap. kaya nasasayangan ako madalas. if youth is wasted on the young, as that saying goes, i guess opportunity is wasted on the oportunistas...or something.

so, sabi nga, don't let their dramas destabilize your world. whatever happens, alam kong may idinudulot akong kabutihan at kagandahan kahit papaano kahit hindi ito nire-recognize o takot i-recognize due to some insecurity or other. secure ako sa knowledge at talento ko without being hambog about it. i know my capacity as well as my limitation. kaya keri lang ako whatever happens. que sera sera nga, di ba? whatever will be, will be. even if people want to control others' futures, the future is not really ours to see, sabi nga ng song. kaya dedma na. kasi ako, puwede akong pumunta sa ibang lugar. yung iba kasi diyan, stuck.

sad lang pag nakaka-encounter ako ng ganitong mga tao. highly talented pero stuck. sayang. nasasayang ang talento nila. wala kasi genuine thirst for knowledge. or hindi sila yung tinatawag na "multiple intelligence" na nakita kong feature sa tv dati. more than gifted kids daw ang mga nasa MI school na ito (na kung tama ang pagkakaalala ko ay nakita ko somewhere near katipunan area). nakakatuwa lang yung categories nila: people smart, math smart, word smart... art smart din yata, hm. forgot. tapos nung ineksplika nila, sabi nila e yung each smart chuva ay mga capacity to deal with things. like kung ma-PR ka or good with people, people smart. kung keri mo ang math, math smart. ganun din sa ibang larangan like sports or arts. e hello, paano kung matagal na kaming ganito? a handful of my closest friends and i are kinda "all-smarts" kung tutuusin kasi hindi kami involved lang sa isang bagay o larangan. hm, multiple intelligence na pala kami without knowing it. dibala? hehe. kasi di ba, kung isa lang yan ang smart ka, luz pa rin. dapat minimum of two smarts per person this day and age. para di ka laos. deva?

o eto pa horoscope ko for today:

You may be working in collaboration more than you prefer these days. If you are struggling within a close relationship, marriage, or professional partnership, setting mutual goals can help you align your energies and head out in the same direction. Tensions may still arise, but this can be part of a healthy process if you don't bury them. Keeping feelings out in the open minimizes any negative impact.

well, not always siguro, especially kung mga lost cause ang kausap/ka-deal mo. it's best to keep some feelings not out in the open in this case. kasi you know better. people smart nga e. devah? define a different strategy na lang with them.

zaturnahhhhh! poof!

sya, bago pa man tayo malunod sa chorva of life, eto muna sampol ng pride photos. those who want the original higher resolution pix, just contact me po. i deliberately blur the people na di ko kilala at di ko sure kung out o hindi. respeto lang sa mga kloseta syempre. di ibig sabihin nagmartsa ka e out ka na. it doesn't work that way, if you don't know yet.

back in malate! happiness! la vie boheme ever!

yezzz, after how many years of bringing it to good ol' kyusi, wala pa ring tatalo sa malateh. kaya narito kami ulit, sa comvergence point sa usual remedios circle na ngayon ay pinaganda na. buti naman.

this year's theme. yah, now nah!

this year, it was all about the pending ANTI-DISCRIMINATION BILL which does not reiterate same sex marriage. what it does, though, is criminalize discriminatory acts against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community like being denied entry to an establishment (like what happened to inday garutay at aruba bar), being fired from work because you're gay (like what happened with marlon the librarian when miriam college fired him for having a union ceremony with his boyfriend) and being harassed/maligned/bugbog by people because you are an LGBT person. many thanks to akbayan partylist for carrying it forever in congress (albeit the homophobic wahoos haranguing them), and now the senate.

LOVELY DAY every saturday 10-10:30am sa GMA channel 7, featuring the adventures of the Lovely Day Force (Love Anover and the kids Bea, Gabby and Jacob).

this week:

all about sugar! the lovely day force encounters a mischievous dwarf and travels to the sugar cane farms of negros to help the dwarf

next week:

the christmas episode! an evil guy named frozone replaces santa claus! the LD force travels to the north pole and discovers the real plot behind this mystery. along the way, they help with santa's chores by giving gifts to children. they also visit a deer farm.

the week after next:

the new year episode! a catwoman named mimiyaw, hungry for 8 extra lives, tries to get the lives of people and the LD force kids! love seeks the help of intelligent dolphins and the kids visit the animation office of toei to prevent a bigger dilemma.

08 December 2006

some thoughts and frequently asked questions about pride march

pride march season na naman! thought i'll share these FAQs for you guys out there.

pero baka itanong niyo kung bakit december ang march at hindi june. isinabay kasi ng community sa celebration my HUMAN RIGHTS WEEK from december 1 (world AIDS day) tapos tatalon ng dec. 4 officially start ng week tapos december 8 ay NATIONAL LESBIAN DAY at december 10 ang human rights day mizmoh. nasa konteskto rin ito ng 16 days of activism against violence against women which is an international chuvaness from november 25 to december 10 din.

again, pride march sa sabado sa malate, remedios circle ang simula mga 3pm tapos larga na. di ako sure sa ruta, sumasama lang ako sa daloy e. ang ending program ay sa may park across baywalk.

hope you take the time to read this stuff below. it's for our own good, really.

1. Are homosexuals abnormal and immoral?

Being homosexual is not abnormal. While it is true that the origin or cause of homosexuality is still subject to contending debates, a huge majority of psychologists and psychiatrists around the world have already declared that homosexuality is not an abnormality. In fact, homosexuality had already been removed from international lists of known diseases and mental sickness.

Despite these active pronouncements of experts in the medical field, however, most sectors or groups within organized religion continue to believe that homosexuality is an aberration because it is intrinsically evil and immoral. For these groups, homosexuals are abnormal because God did not create homosexuals. This view is being contested already within and outside religious denominations by homosexuals and heterosexuals alike. What’s clear, however, is that whatever one’s sectarian beliefs are, it is immoral and intrinsically evil to violate the fundamental human rights homosexuals.

2. Is there such as thing as the “Third Sex?”

There is no third sex. In fact, homosexual activists are conscious in informing the media, public officials, and the society in general that using the term “Third Sex” is an affront not just to lesbians and gays but to women as well, as it implies that the first (thus superior) sex are men. Calling homosexuals as the “third sex” is also saying that women and homosexuals are mere subordinates of men.

3. If homosexuals want to be respected, then how come they cross-dress?

Cross-dressing refers to the use of clothes and accessories (such as make-up) that are traditionally identified with the opposite sex. While some gays prefer to don clothes traditionally identified with men, some wear women’s clothes as an expression and celebration of their sexuality, and they view this as an intrinsic and important component of their sexual orientation.

Respect for cross-dressing lesbians and gays is non-negotiable, and must not be based on one’s preferred mode of clothing. That male cross-dressing homosexuals oftentimes encounter disrespect and discrimination is also indicative of how our society treats women. It is believed by many that it is degrading for men to wear the clothes of an inferior sex.

4. Why do lesbians and gays come-out?

Coming out is popularly defined as one’s acceptance and declaration (to friends or family, for instance) of one’s homosexuality. Coming out is an important process in a homosexual’s coming to terms with his or her sexuality. It’s hard not to come-out. It’s hard to feel fully good about yourself if you have an important secret you can’t tell anyone. That kind of hiding reinforces the belief that there is something shameful or faulty about being gay or lesbian. In reality, there is nothing wrong being lesbian or gay. There is something wrong with the world that makes one feel ashamed or afraid because of what she/he is. Acknowledging a part of yourself that goes against what most people fell comfortable with is truly a brave thing to do. It doesn’t mean you‘re not scared. Being brave is about continuing to do what you need to do – in spite of the fear.

5. What does LGBT mean?

LGBT means to “lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.” Being lesbian/gay means that your primary romantic, emotional, physical and sexual attraction and connection are with someone of the same sex. Bisexuals refer to persons who are physically, sexually, and emotionally attracted to both sexes. Transgender is commonly used to include both transsexual and transvestites. Transsexuals are people who, though they were born with the body of one sex, feel they are really a person of the other sex (for instance, a “male” transsexual thinks and believes that he is a woman). Transsexuals are those who have plan to or have already undergone physical operations to alter their sex. Transvestites who may either be Heterosexual, Transsexual, or Homosexual are people who like to wear clothes associated with the other sex.

6. Are homosexuals discriminated in the Philippines?

Contrary to popular belief that Filipino homosexuals are better off than their other Asian counterparts, discrimination based on sexual orientation remains rampant in the Philippines. Minors who are suspected to have “tendencies” are assaulted by their parents and teachers and ridiculed by his or her peers. There are even reports of teenage lesbians who are raped (in some cases, with the consent of the father) because of the belief that they only needed to taste having sex with men to be transformed. Police continue to arrest homosexuals to extort money from them. Other forms of discriminatory practices include vilification (verbal assault), loss of employment, unequal access to health care, education and other public services, rejection from family, and hate crimes such as physical abuse and murder.

7. Are homosexual families illegal?

Philippine laws DO NOT prohibit ceremonial unions of same-sex couples. Unfortunately, these unions are not legally recognized, and thus are not accorded with equal benefits given to heterosexual families, such as automatic inheritance, next-of-kin status, joint adoption, etc. Same-sex families, which are considered no different from heterosexual families by child development experts, are thus exposed to a host of discriminatory practices without equal protection under the law.

8. Are LGBTs asking for special rights?

Advocacy for LGBT rights is premised on the principles of equal rights, and not special rights. LGBT communities around the world are not asking for special treatment, but only want their fundamental human rights protected and promoted. These rights, which include equal protection under the law, equal opportunities and access to employment, health care, and education, and freedom of expression, are human rights that homosexuals have, but are being systematically denied due to discrimination.

9. Is it true that homosexuals only want to push their anti-life, anti-family agenda?

The only agenda that lesbians and gays have is to be given the freedom to love, and to have their rights recognized, protected and promoted. This agenda does not in any way cause the deterioration of our society or the corruption of our family, but rather contributes to the strengthening of the inherent diversity of our society and our people. It is an agenda that pushes for greater understanding, tolerance and acceptance.

10. Why is June being celebrated as the Pride Month?

In June 1969, the New York police raided the Stonewall Inn, a private bar that was frequented by homosexuals. The raid, which the police claimed was conducted because the bar was serving liquors without permit, was one of the regular police raids meant to harass the gay patrons of the bar. For the first time, however, the raid was met with resistance. Homosexual patrons of the bar, as well as enraged lesbians and gays within the area, started a demonstration that lasted for several days. A year after, the Stonewall riot was commemorated, with more lesbians and gays marching in the streets to protest discrimination and police harassment. A few years later the commemoration was celebrated in other cities as well, and became a global symbol of LGBT pride.
