to the kuya mikes of the world...*!@#*!!

dedma na sa tulog. sino bang may kelangan nun? sleep is a bad invention. so here i am.

with what's going on now, sleep is irrelevant. but i know someone will protest this.

i'm blabbering.

with a day to go before the UPFI's international women's film fest, i keep asking myself what the relevance of this whole event is in line with what's happening to the country now. questions that made me leave the medium in the first place.

relevance. such a strong word. but it does have its purpose -- cinema, i mean. with the advent of the digital technology, it has become more accessible. but where do you use it and what for?

video for social change. this was the focus of my existence for the past half-decade. it's only now that i'm returning to fiction/experimental narratives and such bohemian-rooted visual meanderings initially sparked during my undergrad film days. but is it needed? ah, well, maybe for sanity's sake. or some other sake i haven't figured out as yet.

where do i belong? everybody asks this question at one point in their lives, i'm sure. i know i belong where i am now, but entities seem to send vibes that make you feel the contrary.  perhaps i need to distance myself more from such liaisons and try to re-fuse with the larger world out there  since it's beckoning, anyway, and fast! as in, now na lika na dito!

riddles. itago niyo na lang ako sa pangalang tom...

*

just this early evening, i passed by the quezon hall in peyups where my writer-teacher friend said a poetry/music jamming ek was happening, all still in line with the current political situation. nice sharings and music impromptu singings. but i was turned off later when edru started gushing about the aves couple. komersyal. bumili kayo ng cd niya. anobayun. minsan, mapapaisip ka talaga kung bakit ganun kumilos at mag-isip ang ibang tao. naiisip pa kaya nila ang ibang tao liban sa kanilang sarili? parang hindi e...

at ganyan ang sitwasyon ko ngayon. hay...

i swear, AYOKO NA. as in. this is the last. and no mo'.

promise.

*

Statement mula sa UP President Emerlinda Roman:

========

We find ourselves at an important historical juncture. Let our not miss out on this chance to remain relevant as a University of our people.

yun.

times like these, just like during edsa dos, there's a favorite phrase that politicians and like-minded crocodiles like to use to make them look like they're in the know or intelligent: "when there is a clear and present danger..." favorite pinoy legalese of all time ito, i swear. natatawa na lang ako... hi hi hi hi... sabi nga ni dong abay.

plip.

naalala ko tuloy yung ka-plip-an noong edsa dos. i was the entertainment editor of PINOY TIMES and it was just sheer...weirdness. to the max. biru mo, ang asayment ko, maghanap ng mga artista/showbiz personalities na anti-erap. parang sinabi mo na ring pumunta ko sa pampanga at maghanap ng anti-gloria... kakaiba.

but still, i found some. half of them were brave enough to say it, like boy abunda, and the half were scared shitless of coming out -- and then i saw one of their kind last night on anc heading a media advocacy org chuvah blabbering nonstop... tangeena orocan ka pare

the rest of those ka-plip-an days/daze i turned into a non-fictional narrative. i just had to, kundi mabubuang ako nun. and just when we were at the trail of a libel suit from the then makati meyor... hehe. anyway, read the raw version here. tangeena those were strange days...sobra. you want ngarag? that was ngarag. but ngarag with purpose. and ngarag with some kind of public service aspect to it. not escapist. not kanya-kanya. tayo. pantayong pananaw. doon, tama, doon ko nakita, for the first time, na kaya pala ng mga pinoy magkaroon talaga ng tunay na pantayong pananaw na pinagangalandakan ni zeus salazar.

pero ngayon... wit. wish niyo lang ever.

kaya di na ko nagugulat dito ngayon, sa mga nangyayari. i just try to calm down. but i still check on my loved ones, if they are okay and secured. and they are. and i'm glad. saka nag-secure na ko ng food supplies in case of. hehe. ching!

kaya lang bothered ako by one thing: bakit walang tumitingin/tumitira/tumutuligsa kay mike d'hubby??? hello kuya mike? saan ka naka-billet sa nevada noong fight ni pacquiao?  jeez. people are somewhat misled. the woman, although she also had a hand in things, is also part-pawn. but maybe only a few know about this, especially those who have direct knowledge. but these people know better than to speak up about it. in this country, sometimes it's better to shut up than to speak up. especially if you're in the middle and upper classes. as in, way way up there. tayong nasa baba, di lang natin nararamdaman ang apak ng mga nasa taas. pero minsan, kahit feel na, martir pa rin. tiisin. our lady of perpetual suckers. yan ang patron saint ng pilipinas.

ewan.

wala nang mapaniwalaang matino-tino. biased ang dyaryo, suspicious ang tv, nakakairita ang radyo, ang mahal ng sine (eh? sige lang, isingit lang). internet? sige. sabi ng writer friend kanina, isang writer aquaintance namin ay sa streets of information highway lumalaban/nagpoprotesta. cyberspace baga. o sya sigeeeeeh. sabi mu ehhhhhhhh... tangeena buti na lang di ako natawa ng malakas. katabi ko pa naman si rio alma sa steps hehe. wala, naba-balaj-an lang ako dun sa thought na yun. protesting at the info highway. a different kind of street rally. eh??? hay lord, give me strength, strength not to say anything bad that will have the universe deduct karma points from my being...

at nakinig naman ang universe. buti na lang hehe. well, sige na nga, i will just credit this difference to the vague notion of cultural relativity. it ain't mah culture, it's his, so let him be. in short.

*

saka isa pa. all this hullaballo shyet kanina pa, mula sa tipunan na pinatawag sa cmc hanggang sa tagpuan near oble, all this UP protection ek. diliman commune redux/the sequel/part 2. lahat na. eh bakit hindi niyo nga naman tignan kung sino ang kinakalaban natin. saan ba gradweyt si gloria? ang tuta niya of the moment na si mike d? dibah? dibah? and the topper of 'em all is, si marcos ba, saan gradweyt?

things that make you go hmm. i have to credit my analyst-artist friend who said this. tama naman ang obserbasyon.

so there you go.

speaking of mike d, disappointed lang ako sa kanya, lalo na nung sinasagot niya yung nangyari sa daily tribune. grabeh. who would have thought that the day would come na ide-defend niya ang pag-clamp down sa media blindly? shyet. kuya mike ano ka na???? alien! wala lang, kasi ang memory ko sa kanya ay yung early moments in his political career when his family used to pass by our film office kasi dun nagwo-work yung younger sis niya. saka yung chika sa min ng sis niya tuwing nasa bahay nila kami. and to think noon, talagang young blood kami sa showbiz at dumudulog si sis sa tatay niya at kuya for advise regarding our refusal to work with the showbiz payola paying policy.

tangeena that was such a time for us idealists. pero sometimes, kelangan mo ring lumaro ng terms nila e. for survival. like when i tried to return the envelope, the one giving it reacted like i was giving him HIV. literally. no kidding. and then they didn't invite me na sa mga presscon nila for about 2 months. nung napansin ko, nagpa-invite ulit ako kasi valuable din ang mga news na nakukuha ko sa presscons nila. and ayun, sige na rin, i just took it. sabi nga ng showbiz writer friend ko, compensation iyon for going there and for sharing your time but it doesn't mean they paid you to do a praise release. so ganun na nga ginawa ko. and most pr groups loved me for it. kasi daw i give honest reviews. e dapat lang naman no. hindi ako kiss ass girl. iba kini-kiss ko. ching! hahaha jowk.

anyway, these are strange times. but then again, this is a strange country we're in. what do you call a country where its indigenous peoples are the ones who do not own the land the originally inhabited and the westernized populace become its owners and "nationals?" jus-tiis.

hay naku... aking adhika? makita tayong sakdal laya...lalo na sa isipan. understanding leads to honest actions. sana. wish ko lang.

hay...

myx and mtv : vote4us

hey everyone, please help me naman o.

as i posted previously, the music videos that i made already began airing on the two top cable music channels of the philippines, MYX (owned by abscbn) and MTV (pilipinas).

however, since the artist featured in the videos, pinikpikan, is a group not signed with a major multinational record label, we're having a hard time competing with those vids whose artists are signed. thus, we need your help.

do vote naman for the videos to be aired, kahit several times. here's how:

FOR MTV

please go to their most wanted website, sign your details and request the following:

video title: Sarung Banggi
artist: Pinikpikan

("sarung banggi", also spelled as "sarong banggi" , means "one night", a very old folk, composed by Potenciano Gregorio in 1910 in Albay, southern Luzon . we reinterpreted it Pinikpikan groove style. you will love it once you hear it)

and a separate request for

video title: Butanding
artist: Pinikpikan

(the video "butanding" is about the preservation of the endangered "Butanding" or whaleshark, found in some parts of the Philippines, especially bountiful in Donsol, Sorsogon--the whaleshark capital of the world)

the quotes in parentheses are from carol's email blast of the same message. :)

FOR MYX

this is a text/sms vote. please type MYX VOTE BUTANDING and/or MYX VOTE SARUNGBANGGI and send them to 2366. it works for both globe/touch and smart/addict subscribers. it's just P2.50 per text. cheap no?

if they can only imagine that we did the two music videos of pinikpikan almost for free (as in, nobody got paid, dude). tapos yung iba, ganyan lang, may pinagkukuhanang baul ng pera, tapos walang katuturan ang ilalabas na video. siguro ten years ago, this would have been cute. e pucha pare, tumanda na tayo't lahat, ganyan pa rin ang pinaggagagawa nila (funny notes, yung si darius, kaklase ko sa sts dati tapos kaming magkakabarkada ang kinontrata ng tito ni buwi para gawan ng tribute video yung lolo niyang namatay dati, ismol werld). and to think that this group ain't the best in their batch na lumabas sa peyups bands noong circa 1994-5. well.

at least dati medyo oks pa ang fairtime ("fair" airtime). the first music video that i did in 1997, yung "rainbow in my cloud" sung by anna fegi na theme song ng ANAK NG BULKAN film namin sa premiere productions dati ay nailabas naman sa local channels saka alam ko na-ere rin ito sa mtv asia (asia pa noon, at di pa siya talaga cable, dahil kelangan mo ng special antenna to pick it up dahil parang nire-redirect lang nila yung signal from hong kong, yung ganung klase). ngayon, grabe, okay din na may outlets  pero parang nagiging radyo na ito. sa radyo nga, institutionalized na ang payola e. i'm wondering kung tv is the same now...may nag-tip kasi saming isang artist na parang ganun na rin daw e. pero at least siya nag-enjoy ng good airtime ang video niya (kahit tila ang laki ng lihis sa kanyang original sound...).

that was 1997? geez. mukhang every 8 years na lang yata ako gagawa ng vid... it breaks my heart to feel these things kasi after collaborating with such great people to produce a fairly great work din, tapos hindi nabibigyan ng chance ng husto. kailangan ko na talagang maging media mogul so i can have my own media conglomerate to give airtime to all marginalized artists not given a chance by the mainstream. when i grow up, i want to be rupert murdoch...

*

gusto ko lang ibilang ito bilang experyensya ng isang tumandang nag-mature na ang taste. para din kasing yung pagdalaw ko sa UP fair kanina. tangina wala nang kuwenta. mga sampu sampera na lang ang mga banda. ni walang specialization na. dati, per genre pa yan each night, like reggae/alternative night, pop night, etc. ngayon, labulabo. si magalona ayan bumalik na, kahilera sina hannah sa session road, tas yung ingay ng chicosci sasabay, tas yung reformatted (read: barbiefied na si aia) imago (tanginang mga kanta nya ngayon i-sa da-la-wa tat-lo ngek! asan na yung angas ng first album niyo, nung may byulin pa ni michelle pritchard ba yun?). anobato?  tas yung mga booths, may katuturan at variety. at malas na lang ngayon dahil di na uso yung legendary SIDEWALK SLAMMER sessions (you slam down your throat several shots of different hard drinks, sunudsunod! matira matibay na nakatayo!) saka mga beer bongs (watch MTV spring break eks or any american teen flick, you'll see what i'm talking about). bawal na kasi alcohol sa peyups. tangina kelan pa naging ateneo ang unibersidad ko???? may nakasilip bang heswita??????? geez. mga food booths na lang yata ang okay e. saka mga sports, mga walang kamatayang wall climbing at rifle shooting. dati, may nagta-tattoo talaga ng totoo, hindi lang henna. ngayon, puro henna na lang.

haaaaay. don't mind me. i'm just trying to recall past glory, kasi mukhang nasa past na talaga ang mga magagandang bagay. marami pa rin naman akong naa-appreciate sa mga bago, pero kasi nag-iba na talaga ang mundo. now i know how my parents feel when they reminisce about the old days ek. methinks i like the UP of yore. at least the fair. hay...

in the meantime...

just dreaming of what i want more...

tropicana

i want more of the fresh breeze of unpolluted air (minus the salt content, but we'll let it pass because it's scenic here) as it ruffles the leaves of real nontransplanted trees...

more fun under the sun

i want more sun on my bun... nah on my legs lang, para naman mawala ang puti. oo taliwas ako sa karamihan, kasi gusto kong umitim samantalang sila gusto pumuti...

corralled

i want to see more of god's strange-looking creations when she dabbles with science stuff and produces things that you should just admire even if you don't comprehend them much...

si petrang paa

and i want to feel more of god's strange creations on my skin, under my skin, with my skin, etc... and document them for life. like this. :P

buko in the sky with sandparticles

i want to look at different cloud formations while lying on sand with matter that used to be with those clouds... and buko. :)

fore! mast? basta bangka.

i think i can actually have a hilera of these kinds of photos, yung dulo ng rented motor boat na asakyan ko na sa aking lyf. i have similar shots taken in samal island and bais...saka meron pa e, nalimutan ko lang... di pa kasi digital mga yun.

god's strange creature no. 439

"captain, captain, we have arrived at tattoine, and the skywalker hut is within our radar."

sagot ni captain : "mhwreeeeaaauuuuuuuhhhhrrrr."

si chewbacca pala. na-promote na sha sa millenium falcon now that hans became material for bas-relief wall decoration somewhere in the galaxy hehe.

weh. i'm a STAR WARS generation kiddo now teaching the LOTR/HARRY POTTER generation. ain't life grand? hehe.

video killed the radio star / video star suffocates indie artist

it's finally out.

  "sarung banggi"

i made two music videos (actually three, pero yung isa, tiga-shoot lang ng live action sequence at dapat may ibang gagawa ng animation sequences, pero di pa yata nila tapos) last year and two of them are now with the two major music channels. this one and the one below.

pinikpikan x 3 = yebah!

emman and the ufo pictures people provided the shoot techs of the pinikpikan band's latin-esque rendition of SARUNG BANGGI which sort of served as an exchange for letting them use the song in emman's cinemalaya digifilm SARONG BANGGI. i helped with the videography of the shoot in saguijo, together with miguel fabie and some other dude. i forgot if the top cam or bottom left cam was the one i handled, but the bottom right one was definitely mine also (subbing with the camcorder).

isang gabi lang ito!

the idea is to capture pinikpikan's essence. their world music fusion is definitely alive in this song as they rearranged a traditional bicolano song into a latin-inspired (rhumba nga daw sabi nung taga-spanish embassy) dance number. and when you're watching pinikpikan live, you have three things to focus on: [top] the band's music as they play, [bottom left] the band as they each do their own thang, like carol dancing/singing, boy garro banging the mother djembe, kuya sammy geniusly riffing away, etc., and [bottomright] yourself as part of the gig crowd that dances as the band plays.   kasi ganun lagi, e. parang gusto mong makinig sa mga kanta nila tapos titigan yung mga nagpe-percs ever pero gusto mo ring magsayaw. kaya yan ang resulta. three in one.

carol has three faces...

sayang at di kumpleto yung band when we shot the two main frames. i think tito the bongo boy was in bohol ba? and kuya billy was accompanying mishka in london at that time. si butch naman was late, kasi may day job. kaya nga nilagyan ko ng third frame para dun silang lahat isaksak, yung mga absentees... ayan.  solb.

mtv lightened the overall look of the vid, which was okay. at least they play it somewhat regularly, even without the benefit of the record label backing. i'm so happy about that.  kaya si bahista ng bayan louie (he actually has an award called "band whore" or something from NU ba yun o mtv hehe) ay overexposed sa mtv ngayon dahil yung isa pa niyang band na KAPATID ang rising star feature of the month... kahit hantagal na nila sa industriyah... strange.

butanding

but this one was actually my baby. naunahan ko si susanna, former boss namin ni carol sa NGO, kasi she said dati na she wanted to make this song's video pala together with her indian jowa (ex?). gusto niya kasing mag-dabble into filmmaking e. hm, maybe i should send her a copy. :) kamusta na kaya yun?

from main conceptualization to directing, happiness ito, most times. :)  i played with the pars at the rcbc theater lang, with the guidance of teta tulay our lighting designer. basta kelangang magmukha silang nasa tubig pero makulay pa rin hehe. saka winner talaga yung video narrative interpretation ng anino shadowplay collective pero gory lang kasi yung end part, pinakita nila yung mga butanding na kinakatay. di ko na nilagay yun no, morbid eh.

na-touch naman ako the other week. yung jowa ni djembe player dante, si yanna, said naiyak daw yung 6 year old niya nung pinapanood niya nung video. na-touch daw yung bata at nagkaroon ng advocacy to save the whale sharks. wow ang galeng! if the video could have that kind of effect on a child, wow, grabeh, mission accomplished na ako. i was trying to capture the serenity of this song kasi as how carol composed it, lyrics and melody and all. nahirapan ako nung una sa editing kasi kelangang ibalanse ang maraming bagay, pero i think na-achieve naman yun kahit papaano. and the live butanding video worked. galeng. katuwa talaga.

super (im)pose!

old-fashioned time-tested tricks lang ang inincorporate ko dito. none of those cgi-composite shots ek. i didn't want to rely on editing to tell the story (never will), dapat in-cam lahat halos ng effects. ayoko ng nandadaya. dapat pang-correct lang ang editing, hindi main attraction. i guess that's the cinematographer in me talking.

shadowy

and of course, mga trademark silhouette shots ko naipasok. chiaroscuro lover ini kasi.

de danse

i almost missed this shot. buti na lang nakita ko ulit. it worked perfectly well. whatever anino was doing at the back there, it worked with carol's dance segment. dapat pala zinoom ko ng konti. pero oks na rin.

kumpleto ba?

oo kumpleto yata sila...ay teka si gerry pala wala. si gerry baguio, nasa baguio at that time... :)

help me monitor naman o. PAG NAKITA NIYO SA MTV O MYX ANG MGA MUSIC VIDEOS NA ITO, PAKI-TIMBREHAN AKO. text me if you know or there's always leaflens at gmail.

ang hirap kasi, para ka rin palang nag-aabang ng kanta sa radyo. kelangan i-request para makita. pero kahit i-request mo, dehado ka naman kung payola songs ang katapat mo. hay... buti na lang walang payola sa mtv... i think. eh na-play naman yung sarungbanggi e, and it was clean, no paysung. so there is hope.

i have yet to see what they're playing on myx. tinimbrehan nga ko ng contacts ko dun, forgot to tell naman what vid. oh well... abang galore na lang ang drama natin...

*

but in the meantime, i just want to post this because it serves as a refreshing break, literally, from the tons of workkkkkkkkk i have right now. i'm glad i went, even for just a day, and i'm definitely going back when the sem ends. malapit naaaaaaaaaah!!!

gilidan island teehee

beachy white

the concept of the banana boat baffles me. really. it's a strange device.

talagang tropical tienes!

i love what they did to this place. the only place in that stretch where i am sooooo sure they won't play that pinoy big brother theme song, alam mo yun? so safe sya.

no vendors allowed inside!

and trust me, that is a relief. super.

mahaba ba?

sarap mag-snorkel. :)

preliminary sunset

this ain't the real sunset there kasi pauwi na ito during the boat ride e. dapat i should stay overnight in the island/s to capture the real colors of the place. like in pagudpud or bantayan before.

photo respite lang po from the neverending writing/reading this week. pramis, 'pag nakapag-report na ko this friday at naisumite na ang kalahati ng nobela, magfe-fair akooooooh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

see u there.

call for entries: international women's filmfest shorts competition

join tayo mga sisters!

IWFF 2006: Short film and video competition about women

March 2006 will signify the 16th year of the International Women’s Film Festival (IWFF) hosted by the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI). This yearly exhibition of films by and about women is the one and only running women’s film festival of is kind in the Philippines held during Women’s Month. It highlights the importance of raising women’s consciousness, promoting women’s rights advocacy and empowerment primarily through the visual medium of the cinema.

This year, the IWFF will have an additional component to further extend the reach of its goals: a short film and video competition. In line with the festival’s objectives, the aim of this competition is to give an added venue for women filmmakers to exhibit their works.

As the short cinematic form has often been marginalized in most (mainstream) film sectors, so have the makers of such works – especially the women. With the advent of the digital technology worldwide, people – especially those who have been or are in the independent/alternative filmmaking scene -- have been utilizing this new medium to tell and retell their stories. Women have also joined this so-called “digital revolution” and are using these new tools to further their causes. The IWFF supports this endeavor and new movement/s to extend the reach of women’s works.

The IWFF Committee would like to invite women filmmakers from all over the world to be part of this event by submitting their works. All genres are accepted. There is no entry fee to join this competition. Successful entries will be exhibited at the festival. Trophies and prizes will be given away to the best works.

The following are the complete guidelines for the competition:

1. The International Women’s Film Festival Short Film and Video Competition is open to all women filmmakers, video makers and multimedia artists from all over the world whose works reflect the vision and mission of the Festival (please see the festival website for more details). Submissions from individuals, groups or organizations are welcome. Students and young filmmakers are highly encouraged to participate.

2. Entries must have been completed no earlier than January 1, 2003.

3. Works could be in any language, but they should have English subtitles. Entries without subtitles will not be accepted.

4. Entries can belong to any genre/categories such as narrative, documentary, animation, experimental, multi-media, etc. Works can also be of mixed genres.

5. The running time for all entries must not exceed 25 minutes.

6. For this year, we will accept preview DVD, VCD and Mini-DV copies in NTSC format only. However, works could have originated in any of the following formats:

Any Film format (35mm, 16mm, 8mm)
Any Video NTSC/PAL-SECAM format (HD, DVD, S-VHS, Mini-DV etc.)
Any multi-media/new media device/s or using various information and
communication technology (ICT) tools or software/hardware
      (e.g. computer-generated vector/fractal images, flash animation, etc.)

7. When selected for the competition, the preview copies will already serve as the exhibition copies. Filmmakers will be contacted to submit clearer (possibly NTSC DVD) versions only if their preview copies are found to be defective and hence unsuitable for large-screen projection.

8. Submitted works will not be returned to applicants and they will automatically become part of the UPFI/IWFF archives. In this regard, please do not send your original works.

9. The cost of shipping and handling the submissions should be shouldered by the sender. When sending the package, please declare in the mail that contents have “No Commercial Value” or “For non-commercial/festival purposes only.” The IWFF organizers will not shoulder any taxes, custom dues/duties/fees, delivery fees or any in-transit insurance in receiving the entries nor will they be held responsible for damage inflicted upon the packages resulting from the process of mailing.

10. All works must strictly be independent works and not produced for commercial purposes. Commissioned works are not allowed.

11. For submissions of several entries in one package, each entry must be properly labeled with the following:

Title of Entry (original title/English translation of title)
Category

Running Time

12. All entries must be submitted with the following materials:
