THE SCRIBE VIBE

Writing about hatred to write off bigotry

In a hetero-centric patriarchal society, machismo and gender-based discrimination seem to be part of an unwritten logic that everyone in society subconsciously adheres to. No matter how much advocates write about how people should not be violent towards women or how heterosexuals should respect homosexuals as human beings, bigotry and prejudice sadly remain in our society. What’s an oppressed individual to do? Writing always helps—writing about the discriminatory act, writing to let others know and feel the injustice, and writing to say that victims and survivors of such insensitivity aren’t putting up with it anymore.

This is what one marginalized individual did last weekend. In my email box, I found an open letter by Sass Sasot, a founding member of the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines (STRAP).
