couch potato introspection + gay games

current beverage: kape
current chicha: nada
who i'd love to kill today: keanu reeves (for ruining the films he's in)
who i'd love to hug today: charlize theron (for being so damn talented, period)

this rainy day weekend brought out the couch potato in me, simply because i can't make babad sa computer dahill kumukulog paminsan-minsan at takot ako sa kidlat. natustahan na ko ng computer dati dahil doon (no thanks to bayantel's inept phoneline installing, na wala palang grounding! sus) kaya careful na ko. buti na lang at internal modem lang ang nasira ng husto sa akin noon.

i slept watching tv and woke up with the tv still on. interesting to note that around 4am, i woke up to the show THE DIRECTORS and their featured dude was darren arronofsky. they were discussing how he made REQUIEM FOR A DREAM and also his new one, THE FOUNTAIN. man, i wanna watch that! si cool oz hugh jackman pala and the pretty pretty rachel weisz ang bida niya. bet!

okay tong dude na to. kung may tinatawag na visionary, i think that's him. iba ang attack niya sa material, e, kaya i like him. hindi ko pa siya kilala noon when i saw his first feature, yung PI, this black and white almost silent film na nakita ko sa cable dati, years ago. gusto ko ang style niya, complementary kasi sa content at message ng film niya. ganun din yung requiem although that one, tangina lang sa bigat kaya wag panonoorin yun pag depressed ka. ha.

hmm dapat pala yun ang pinanood ko sa Film 10 classes ko for their diagnostic. hehe. pero okay na rin na NATURAL BORN KILLERS ang pinili ko. scared the bejeezus out of them yata hehe. but i like it because it made them really think. yun lang naman ang habol ko e. i wanna know how they think about films, lalo na't non-film majors mga to.

well, kanina naman late na ko nagising at ang naabutan ko sa cable surfing ay THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. and i wanted to watch that again if only for that brilliant confrontation scene between keanu banu and al pacino (who can forget when he said "I have so many names..." tapos sabay extend ng arms and hands palms up. grabe galeng). and of course ang galing ni lola charlize dito. dito ko siya unang napanood dati, at nagulat ako kasi akala ko isa lang siyang "just another leading lady shweshwe actor" but no, ang galing niya rito ha. lalo na nung portions na maluka-luka na siya sa nakikita niyang mga demonyo saka yung nagpakamatay siya. aaaay da best ang lolah!

napanood ko rin siya dati sa isang show sa etc2ndave where they discuss their acting styles with this acting coach or something, tapos may acting class students sa audience na magtatanong sa kanya. okay yung show na yun. and from her answers, makikita mo talagang isa siyang tunay na aktres na konektado sa materyal na ginagawa niya at sa karakter na hinuhugutan niya. galeng! intelligent woman, this lady. kokonti lang ang ganito ngayon at buti naman at merong nadagdag. nag-lie low na kasi ang lola jodie foster ko at si meryl streep e. pati si glenn close. nasan na ba ang mga gelay na toh? mga power women in hollywood. sayang.

in other oliver stone news, after the devil's advocate, paglipat ko sa kabilang movie channel ay ALEXANDER naman ang palabas. and i didn't know that the film suffered massively from this disease called the GACC Syndrome, or the GMA7 Artist Center Casting Syndrome where two actors are cast as parent-offspring even if their real ages do not span more than a decade! take the case sa MAJIKA ba yun, ang nanay ni angel locsin ay si carmina villaroel!  or dati sa ENCANTADIA na yung si dingdong dantes e tatay ng isa sa mga gelay dun na kung tutuusin ay dapat ka-loveteam lang niya!!! mahabagin! tapos dito, si colin farrell ay 19 years old!!!! ha???? sinong maniniwala dun??? at nanay niya ang aking ex-love na si angelina jolie!!!! nubah!!!!! all the bad macedonian accent in da world will not build this illusion of angie being collin's nanay! nubah! kalokah.

so i turned the tv off and here i am.

*

opening night photo. astig!

check out more datos sa official gay games website.

bet! sarap manood ng ganyang event no? someday soon, we'll do that.

my friend in new york naman emailed me this poem thingie made by an out american-jamaican artist. wanna share it with you. binasa daw ito sa opening.  ewan lang kung tama ang nakuha kong versification ng lines kasi naka-paste lang sa email eh. you know how that goes.

gusto ko yung challenge niya actually. "let us interrogate the direction of our freedoms." this really applies to the whole world right now, not just sa lgbt world. and that last stanza makes a lot of sense.

interessant.

The speech/poem/rant is attached. Please pass it on, especially to the people you know most need to read/hear/respond to it. In the tradition of Bayard Rustin, Susan B. Anthony, June Jordan, Harvey Milk, and Audre Lorde, let us interrogate the direction of our freedoms. Let us continue to ask ourselves those questions that are hardest for us to hear.

With love and the most affectionate gratitude,
Staceyann

Staceyann Chin's speech/poem at Gay Games VII

Being queer has no bearing on race
or class
or creed
my white publicist said
true love is never affected by color
or country
or the carnal need for cash

I curb the flashes of me crashing across the table
to knock his blond skin
from Manhattan
to Montego Bay to witness
the bloody beatings of beautiful brown boys
accused of the homosexual crime of buggery

amidst the new fangled fallacies
of sexual and racial freedom for all
these under-informed
self-congratulating
pseudo-intellectual utterances
reflect how apolitical the left has become

I don't know why
but the term lesbian just seems so
confrontational to me
why can't you people just say you date
other people ?

Again I say nothing
tongue and courage tied with fear
I am at once livid
ashamed and paralyzed
by the neo-conservatism
breeding malicious amongst us

Gay
Lesbian
Bisexual
Transgender
Ally
Questioning
Two spirit
Non-gender conforming—every year we add a new letter
our community is happily expanding beyond the scope
of the dream stonewall sparked within us

yet everyday
I become more afraid to say black
or lesbian
or woman—everyday
under the pretense of unity I swallow something I should have said
about the epidemic of AIDS in Africa
or the violence against teenage-girls in East New York
or the mortality rate of young boys on the south-side of Chicago

even in friendly conversation
I get the bell hooks-ian urge
to kill mother-fuckers who say stupid shit to me
all day
bitter branches of things I cannot say out loud
sprout deviant from my neck

fuck you-you-fucking-racist-sexist-turd
fuck you for wanting to talk about homophobia
while you exploit the desperation of undocumented immigrants
to clean your hallways
bathe your children and cook your dinner
for less than you and I spend on our tax deductible lunch!

I want to scream
all oppression is connected you dick

at the heart of every radical action in history
stood the dykes who were feminists
the anti-racists who were gay rights activists
the men who believed being vulnerable
could only make our community stronger

as the violence against us increases
where are the LGBT centers in those neighborhoods
where assaults occur most frequently?
as the tide of the Supreme Court changes
where are the LGBT marches
to support a woman's right to an abortion?
what say we about health insurance
for those who can least afford it?

HIV/AIDS was once a reason for gay white men to act up
now your indifference spells the death
of straight black women
and imprisoned Latino boys
apparently
if the tragedy does not immediately impact you
you don't give a fuck

offer a social ladder to those of us inclined to climb
and watch the bottom of a movement fall out
a revolution once pregnant with expectation
flounders
without direction the privileged and the plundered
grow listless
apathetic and individualistic no one knows
where to vote
or what to vote for anymore

the faces that represent us
have begun to look like the ones who used to burn crosses
and beat bulldaggers and fuck faggots up the ass
with loaded guns

the companies that sponsor our events
do not honor the way we live or love
or dance or pray
our life partnerships are deemed domestic
and the term marriage is reserved
for those unions sanctioned by a church controlled state

for all the landmarks we celebrate
we are still niggers
and faggots
and minstrel references
for jokes created on the funny pages of a heterosexual world

the horizons are changing
to keep pace with technology and policy alike
the LGBT manifesto has evolved into a corporate agenda
and outside that agenda
a woman is beaten every 12 seconds
every two minutes
a girl is raped somewhere in America

and while we stand here well-dressed and rejoicing
in India
in China
in South America a small child cuts the cloth
to construct you a new shirt
a new shoe
an old lifestyle held upright
by the engineered hunger and misuse of impoverished lives

gather round ye fags, dykes
trannies and all those in between
we are not simply at a political crossroad
we are buried knee deep in the quagmire
of a battle for our humanity

the powers that have always been
have already come for the Jew
the communist
and the trade unionist
the time to act is now!
Now! while there are still ways we can fight
Now! because the rights we have are still so very few
Now! because it is the right thing to do
Now! before you open the door to find
they have finally come
for you

cool.

anyway isa pang chorva, i just finished a megamini-review of this book sa aking anti-rust punditry pages.

inday garutay and lgbt discrimination + manila jerks + life changes

Press Release 25 July 2006 Quezon City

Inday Garutay Cries Foul, Files Complaint against Aruba Restaurant

In the past few weeks, people must have read and heard of the 4 July 2006 incident at Aruba Restaurant in Metrowalk Pasig City where Inday Garutay was reportedly approached by the restaurant supervisor, a certain “Tintin” Aguilar, and was told that Aruba had a dress code, and that cross-dressers like him are prohibited from entering the establishment. (“Mayroon po kaming dress code dito. Bawal po ang cross-dresser. Bawal po ang ganyang katulad mo.”) Out of indignation, Inday Garutay left Aruba, not realizing until hours later that he finally understood what discrimination really meant.

“ENOUGH. It is simply no longer acceptable for people to get away with discriminating against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders (LGBTs) on the basis of our sexual orientation. We do not want special rights – only EQUAL rights,” said Atty. Gari Bernal of the Rainbow Rights Project (R-Rights), Inc.

Inday Garutay has since filed a civil case for damages against Aruba Restaurant. As stated in his complaint, “while private establishments do have the right to impose a dress code, it may not (sic) – in the guise of implementing such a dress code – discriminate against individuals on the basis of his or her personal condition, i.e., sexual orientation.”

The Philippines is a signatory to several international agreements that uphold the human rights of and equal protection for all persons, including sexual minorities. Equal protection for all persons is likewise constitutionally enshrined in the Bill of Rights. The State is further given the duty to ensure the fundamental equality before the law of women and men.

"We admire Inday Garutay’s bravery in fighting for equality. Discrimination exists yet only a few ever come out to complain, making it appear that it is not happening. There are many reports of similar incidents in other private establishments, but the victims often choose not to come out publicly for fear of reprisal or further abuse. We hope that Inday Garutay’s act of bravery will embolden other gays and lesbians to report cases of discrimination,” said Germaine Leonin, President of R-Rights.

Inday Garutay’s experience makes it clear that we need to pass the Anti-Discrimination Bill, which is presently pending in Congress as H.B. No. 634 of Rep. Etta Rosales, and S.B. Nos. 1641 of Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago and 1738 of Sen. Ramon Bong Revilla, Jr. The passage of the Anti-Discrimination Bill is crucial in defining and penalizing practices that unjustly discriminate against the LGBT community.

“Businesses, big and small, should not be allowed to benefit from the power of the pink peso if they are not ready to treat their LGBT patrons with respect, and to accord them equal service,” said Anne Marie Lim of R-Rights.

Of course, there are at least two sides to a story. "Either way, the LGBT Community stands to benefit because these issues have been brought to light and more people may now come to know and understand the LGBT community's struggles and plight," said Angie Umbac of R-Rights.

nobody should be denied of their rights no matter who they are. kahit nga yung napagsuspetsahang kriminal at dinadampot na, dapat pinapaalam sa kanila ang dahilan kung bakit sila inaaresto at pinipik-ap ng pulisya. kaya meron sa states na tinatawag na miranda rights. ito yung shpluk ng mga lespu na "you have the right to remain silent. anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. you have the right to an attorney and if you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided you...blah" sorry di ko memorya ang miranda rights. hanggang diyan lang ang kaya ng powers ko.

so goes inday garutay's case. i do hope aruba and all of the elitist industries in the philippines learn from this. first, we are filipinos and we are never second class citizens in our own fucking country. and that i want to address to places like hard rock café in makati and, well, the now defunct giraffe and also café havana in greenbelt3. and all places na kapag may puting pumasok, inuuna nilang pagsilbihan iyon kesa sa aming mga naunang pinoy doon.

yea, life sux that way sometyms.

read more of inday garutay's case in lagablab's blog.

but sometimes, it's also sad that people in a position of comfort like inday take fighting for their rights for granted sometimes. sabi nga niya, ngayon lang daw niya naintindihan yung pinaglalaban ng lgbt movement all this time sa pride march. kumbaga, until it happens to these people, they don't care about the movement. now, they come running to it/us when they get offended.

sometimes this bothers me. parang yung sinabi ni direk joel lamangan years ago sa isang forum. di daw siya nakakaranas ng discrimination-discrimination na pinagsasasabi namin when he was growing up as an openly gay man. well, good for him. pero to feign ignorance on this matter is like bullshit. i asked him point blank, kasi sabi niya matagal ang pagbabago sa pagtingin sa lgbt sa media ek, sabi ko e kelan magkakaroon ng change? ewan daw niya.

ewan. ewan ko rin sa kanya.

hmmm.. in other lalala news, a friend from a glossy magazine forwarded this link to me.  subtitled trouble in model-landia. i know it's still abuse against women but... sige, this took place in a "fabulous yacht party" full of partying beautiful people of manila. and by beautiful people we mean... mowdelz. yea you know, the cal carrie types and all, and those people i didn't want to cover back then when it was like "fashion week" in metro manila. blah. mowdelz. i really hated the fashion beat. sorry ha. i just don't like it.

i dunno. lots of women in more destitute situations get beaten up daily on a regular basis and we don't even hear of them. just because this gelay had a blog, she can scream all she wants. not to say na tama yung nangyari sa kanya (pero actually, hindi nga gaanong malala e). what i mean is that siguro harapin na lang niya yung model jerk na chumorva sa kanya para matameme once and for all. after all, the running stereotype about these male models are all...true. so she should take advantage of that and scare the bejeezus out of this jerk of hers. and empower herself in the process. whoever she is.

mowdelz.

daming jerk cases sa metro manila alone. sana nga may vigilante group lang na tumitira sa mga ganitong jerks e, e di mas happy ang society hehe. well, it's an interesting option no matter how radical... ah. well, read my novel na lang when it comes out hehe. i explored this concept there. i hope ____ (insert publishing house name) likes it :)

ching!

in other confusing news, i already quit directing LOVELY DAY for reasons i'd like to keep to myself. pero ang official press release ko diyan ay, gusto ko na kasi ulit magkaroon ng sexlife kaya i quit the directing job hehe saka kasi kelangan ko nang tapusin ang linshak na MA ko this year para makapag-PhD na ang byuti ko ng malikhaing pagsulat (oo, sawa na ko sa creative writing at philippine lit in english utang na loob).  but looks like i'll still moonlight there once in a while if my sked permits it because my execprod friend is asking. well, we'll see.

so yes, you folks can go back to sleeping late on saturday mornings hehe. i know you wake up because i badgered you to see the show on account of me hehe. and thanks mucho for that.  pero well, support the show na lang rin just in case even if i'm not there fulltime.

i'm exploring another directing option now pero i can't spill it yet. i have yet to see if this will affect my sexlife anew hehe bago tayo um-oo ng husto.

hay nakuh crossroads na naman ang drama ng lola niyo. well. blah. we'll see.

*

oi womyn like me, baka gusto niyo tulungan ang isang researcher ng MFT masters studies niya from purdue university calumet about women in intimate relationships with other women. access this link na lang. sige na, survey karma ito.

*

in other homophobic news, my friend told me that jullie yap daza wrote this recently in a magazine pullout for a broadsheet:

"There are more risky types of sex, but none more risky than sex with an ex, sex with a best friend's spouse, sex with a best friend's ex, and sex with the same sex. With an ex, it could lead to reconciliation! With friend's spouse, to confrontation! With friend's ex, to guilt and self-pity for touching damaged goods! With the same sex, to the sudden awakening that one is too lonely and too lost, to have to turn to homosexuality. Alas, same-sex sex is a common casualty of AIDS/HIV."

danton said baka lost o pa-witty lang ang lola yap. kasi fag hag daw siya at may openly gay son. but still, this does not mean open ang mind ng husto ng lola. o kaya kelangan niya ng extra education o paglilinaw. like i have friends whom i thought na bukas ang isipan pero they still use the term THIRD SEX not realizing that it demeans more than lgbts by relegating us to a hierarchy of sexes and that it is also demeaning to them as women because it means second class lang ang babae compared to men who are considered as first sex. papayag ba tayong lahat sa ganon????? i don't think so.

so please everyone, STOP USING THE TERM "THIRD SEX." biologically speaking, 2 sexes lang tayo kasi nuba. wala ba kayong natutunan sa high school biology?

back to jullie. hm. ewan ko. ayoko mag-comment sa kanya. sana lang she stops writing shit like that. kahit gusto niya pa-witty effect siya.

25 July 2006

media blitz and bummer - and i luv glenda!

current beverage: water
current chicha: saging
who i'd like to kill today: your president (i relinquished her years ago)
who i'd like to hug today: people who don't believe in flak - and miss usa

bakit ko gustong i-hug si miss usa? kasi feeling ko tombash sha at talagang konti na lang e mag-a-out na siya sa miss universe kahapon hehehehe. did you see her national costume? equestrian stars and stripes complete with the shiny boots horse whip thing! dominatrix, pare. tapos ilang beses bang kelangang sabihin sa profile niya na "i am a tomboy; she is a self-proclaimed tomboy..." hmm kakaiba ha. at sabi nga ng isa kong preynd, kakaiba daw siya humawak dun sa top 4 gels when they called her to be the "fourth runner-up" (a glam way to say KULELAT!)

"i would like to fight for equality for gays and lesbians everywhere in the universe and this tiara is for my partner over there. luv you honey! thank you mr. donald trump! let's end discrimination!"

hehehe.

well obviously, nakatutok ang tv kahapon ng umaga sa miss universe pageant, ang taunang paghuhusga sa kagandahan ng mga kababaihan mula sa iba't ibang bansa sa mundo. it's just strange to see that most of these women are not so "pure-breed" anymore. or pureblood, to use harry potter lingo. parang lahat hybrid. si miss sri lanka nga, parang fil-am (if i heard it right, parang jackie hernandez ang pangalan niya!). tapos yung mga taga-slovak o nordic region e parang hindi na...hm, hindi na matigas? hehe. kokonti lang yung parang talagang indigenous ang hitsura sa bansa nila, like si miss trinidad and tobago. kahit nga yung mga taga latinam e parang di na masyadong golden brown skinned.

hm i'm sure nawala ang mga bakla sa kalye kahapon ng umaga dahil dito. i swear, this is a phenomenon. nung nasa dumaguete workshop kami nung 2000, we witnessed this first hand. nawala si neil, si wendell at yung iba pa. late na nang nalaman naming miss u pala sa tv. hehe. i swear totoo to.

although walang masyadong wit or witty lines sa q&a portion in the lines of "harsher punishment for parole violators...and world peace." hehe. pero bet yung sagot ni miss japan ha, about men starting wars and how to end violence. ayuz! national costume winner ka tuloy dahil dyan. mag-sparring kayo ni miss usa gamit mo ang samurai mo. (she actually looked like a toy action doll figure, no?)

*

mahaba-haba ito dahil sa ulan. salamat kay glenda at nasuspindi ang klase kahapon at ngayon. da best! and i also found out lately that i am inspired to write during these typhoon-ulan times. nag-shift na ulit ang gears ng creativity ko. dati kasi, kapag umaaraw sa labas at makulimlim sa loob, bet ko yun. ngayon iba na. hmm. nag-e-evolve na naman ako.

kayo, nag-evolve na ba kayo?

*

shempre nung hapon, nakatutok ulit ang tv sa state of the nation address or sa lingo natin, sona. ibang klase ang lola natin ano? sobrang bilib sa sarili. ito yung sinasabing " so full of herself" hay naku. kawawa na naman ang pinas... tapos the scariest this is when she said the consitution is outmoded/outdated or something. ohmygawd. either cha-cha ito o martial law part 2 tayo ati. hay...

tapos before that, si presidential lickass staff--er, chief of staff mike d was sprouting lines na ewan ko kung conscious ang katawan niyang binibigkas niya, lam mo yun? para siyang nag-out of body experience at pinapanood niya yung katawan niyang nagsasalita ng lines like "this is about the success, our economic stability and of course political stability..."

hello anong political stability ang pinagsasasabi mo???? alam mo bang patayan kaliwa't kanan dito? oplan bantay laya nga ba yun? whose freedom are you guarding anyway? certainly not ours. have you ever heard of civil liberties???

well, i guess people change. this is not how i knew him way back in '97. but i guess politics and 9 years change people's personalities. i just wonder how her daughter mikey is now. malaki na siguro yung bata. kyut na toddler pa kasi ito nang dumadalaw sila sa opis namin kasama ang mum niyang si julie sa premiere. opismeyt and gud preynd kasi namin yung younger sis nila. at least siya suwerte kasi nasa states na; di niya nararamdaman ang ripple effect ng lickass politicking.

hm tinakwil na kaya siya ng pamilya niya? man i wish he'd do better. for his daughter's sake. and ours. yuck lang kasi e.

hay ano na kayang mangyayari sa bansang ito? minsan, ayoko na lang isipin... nate-tempt na tuloy akong lumayas. tulad ng milyun-milyong pangarap ng mga pinoy... ewan ko ba. may ganyang mode ako lately. evacuate mode. up and out. kelan ba kasi gagawa ng lunar station? i wanna live there. or in saturn. para sosyal ang planet, may rings.

in press freedom/free expression news, nachorva ang livejournal lately a. read on:

POPULAR BLOGGING SITE RESTRICTS USE OF BREASTFEEDING PHOTOS
LiveJournal cites breastfeeding images as 'inappropriate' and sends mothers to the virtual restroom
Women on the popular blog site LiveJournal are calling foul at the company's decision to brand images of breastfeeding as 'inappropriate.' Many users of the site have joined together to urge LiveJournal's parent company SixApart to address their concerns and reevaluate the policy.
Small "userpics" of no more than 100 by 100 pixels represent LiveJournal members throughout the site. Users can define one of these icons as "default icon" which plugs it into the user's public profile. These default icons were originally not permitted to be 'sexually explicit or graphically violent.' Recently, icons which depicted breastfeeding were cited as being 'inappropriate' by the LiveJournal abuse team, a group of volunteers who monitor complaints on the site. After clarification was requested, LiveJournal changed their FAQ to reflect a no nudity rule and is claiming that icons with visible areola or nipple are not permitted. Whether or not areola is visible in a photograph is dependent on a number of factors, including skin tone of the mother and physical changes during pregnancy.
Claimed Live Journal Abuse Staffer 'Erin' in a post on the site, "That's really a matter for the FCC to decide. LiveJournal's policies on this mirror what would be allowed on primetime TV or in a PG-13 movie." However, this is not true. The FCC does not consider the act of breastfeeding on television to fall under the definitions of indecency or obscenity.
Breastfeeding is exempt from nudity laws throughout the United States as well as countries such as Canada. Advocates are urging LiveJournal to adopt the same criteria. "It is regrettable that LiveJournal has chosen to target breastfeeding mothers instead of standing up for the protection provided them by law," says Carrie Patterson, executive director of ProMom.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing public awareness and public acceptance of breastfeeding. Advocates state that the feeling that breastfeeding should be hidden only fosters the idea that the natural act of nourishing a child is scandalous.
Breastfeeding bloggers who have refused to change their default icon have been suspended from the site. These users, as well as others questioning the policy, have been treated poorly by the site's volunteer abuse team, something that is not unusual according to other site users.

why are the wrong people in the right positions in this country? one-way ticket to doomsday na tayo nito eh. gudlak sa atin.

At ang number 1 sign na you're in OFFICE HELL...

pero dati may HR head nga kaming parang si dexter doria. as in, she really turned evil on us, man. she sided with the wrong vps kasi ayan... kaya kasama siyang lumubog nang lumubog ang mga yun.

i was kidnapped by lesbian pirates from outer space!

i've been on a support-lesbian-women-who-make-comics-with-good-lesbian-characters/storylines mode lately (both local and international) at dahil rare at konti lang naman halos ang naaabot ng aking kamay at mata sa topic na ito, sana tulungan niyo akong dumami ito.

a major studio in the U.S. launched a contest to discover the next big comic name, so to speak. e nakakatuwa yung isang entry.

Susan Bell was a normal Earth girl, with a brand new job as a secretary. Little did she know, she would be kidnapped by Lesbian Pirates from Outer Space! They claim she is one of them, and, whether she likes it or not, she's now part of the crew! Travelling through the universe, under the direction of Captain Janet McSapphic, they take what they like and do what they please. Meeting villains like The Incredible Male Man (a super-chauvanist), the sexy pirate girls won't let anyone stop them!

so vote na natin siya. isa siya sa 3 finalists. gawa ito ng isang openly out lesbian comic writer.

take me baby or leave me

current beverage: absolut rasptangvo
who i'd love to kill today: irresponsible neighbors
who i'd love to hug today: jonathan larson, for
rent

as part of my early nightcap (yea, in this part of the philippines, 9 friggin' 16 pm is fucking too early), let me wax poetic and wane rhetoric.

soundtrack of my life tonight is the ever-reliable rent musical. hay i missed the movie showing, dearies, even sa sarili kong turf (kundangan ba naman kasing ipakita ng ala-una ng hapon!) heniwey...

it just hit me how i love this song pala. no matter how freaking hard it is becoming for the mind, heart and especially the soul, it's nice to remember this.

how do you measure the life of a woman or a man?

i don't want to be remembered as that loner who saw life via an angsty myopic lens. i'd rather be remembered for the works i've done and hopefully i hope these works will mean something to some poor unfortunate soul out there. that's what i felt when i was writing my young adult novel earlier. yea, the writing bug bit hard today -- even with 3 hours of sleep lang to go by -- it just kept on coming out. hay sa wakas matatapos ko yata ito by my deadline of august. salamat sa goddess naman.

the reason why i delayed this novel and risked an inc in my penalty MA subject is because i really want to cook this one well. i feel i have something good here, and i don't want to rush it just for the grade. i've never been grade-conscious naman in my life. i care more about producing good work kaya i really want to sit on this one and let it marinate until it's ready to be cooked just right. and the cooking is just going swell, thank you very much.
kaya dedma na muna sa gym today. writing prevails over everything - yea, even gimmicks or even lovelife/sexlife. kaya dami ko na ring tinanggihan at inatrasan today. i don't regret it one bit. i'm now more than halfway through this novel and i'm glad. sana nga walang shoot bukas at dire-diretso lang ito e. pero well, something else beckons so... let's see if it can beckon ever so loudly the next times... it's the thing i have to decide on soon. again. ah well.

i'm writing about the coming out and discovery of a young adult of her lesbianism. it's like a guide for those who have been lost, unsure and excited at the same time. i hope i had something like it to guide me then. something i needed when i "turned" (aba parang bampira ano? or werewolf hehe. but in a way, i see being queer as such --  a turning point for me, like a level up in being human hehe tarush). and as i write it, i just figured that i'm not just writing it for young adults but for anyone who has ever had any doubts about their sexuality and who they are, in general. a lot of adults i know are like that. so i'm hoping that this work might serve someone some good somehow sometime soon.

*

it just occurred to me yesterday how the pop culture clutches that held up my persona's principles are so dated as of today.  currently reading douglas coupland's polariods frm the dead and i can't help but think that the days of the gen x-er's rule is over. to paraphrase larson, we're living in asia at the beginning of the millenium. so many changes. so many adjustments to make. so many things to adapt and adopt. no matter how much we want to slow down, we can't. AND WHY IS THAT?????????

it boggles this mind.

*

back to the hobby of music. i'm beginning to get more and more convinced that i should go back to what i tried years ago. i know i'm no musician but there's one instrument that clicked with me and i think i have to at least reconnect with that. music has always fueled this being ever since i can listen to the radio and music has guided this being for so long, especially during the traversing of rough terrains so i should be more in touch with the medium, too, even if just for a bit. so that's what i'm gearing up to these days. that's why i can't decide much on the thing i have to decide on soon. hay. cryptic na ba? dedma na. you know what i mean.

no day but today kasi e. sabi nga, i can't control my destiny. so better live life to the fullest. forget regret or life is yours to miss. kaya kahit ano pa man ang tingin ng ibang tight ass dito, isa lang maasabi ko sa kanila.

*

okay so that's absolut talking hehe. pardon my french.

*

how do you measure a year in the life? to segue to tori amos' song, if i die today i'd be a happy phantom. and i'll go chasing those fuckers in malakanyang away hehe. para naman magkaroon ng totoong reform sa pinas.

how do you figure a lest year on earth? hm that's tricky. sabi nga, remember the love. seasons of love. minsan kasi tagtuyot ka sa love. minsan tag-ulan ang love. minsan, wala, drought.  hm. minsan lalamigin ka sa pagkawala. minsan sobra kang paiinitin sa lagi niyang pagiging nariyan. so ano bang season ang magandang timpla para sa pagmamahal?

hay naku eto na naman tayo. pag pagmamahal ang pinag-uusapan, hindi na matatapos yang usapang yan. kasi it's like catching the most elusive body of water using pantyhose. it just won't hold long, dearie. it gives form to the pantyhose for  while, but it doesn't fill its every centimeter for long. o ayos ba sa metaphor. ngayon ka lang nakarinig ng paghahambing ng pagmamahal sa lingerie, ano hehe. wala, this is the spirits talking in me. i better not interfere it. so go lang.

*

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr i just learned that the shoot tomorrow is cancelled. why didn't i get a text advisory? ngyarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

puwede pa bang humabol sa penguin? hmmm.

seryoso?

kasi sabi ng stars ko :

There is something brewing and it becomes more bothersome because you cannot put your finger on it. You may even become obsessive about your thoughts, for your self-esteem can suffer when you are hiding the truth. If there was ever a time to let go of something, it would be now. Once everything is revealed, you'll be able to handle what arises with increased confidence.

tangina ang hirap talaga ng major decision-making. bakit ba kelangang mag-decide???? kasi, ang may kasalanan pa rin niyan, bakit hindi 30 hours ang isang arawwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!! i still lobby for a 30-hour day!

yun lang naman ang kelangan ko e. time. more time. time for me, time for what i'm doing, time for my art/s, time for my craft/s. time for some lovin' (okay, kahit seks lang puwede na hehe). bakeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet kokonti ang oras ng relos? bakeeeeeeeeeet lumulubog agad ang araw!!!!!!!!!

pero sasabihin nga ng iba riyan, it's not the quantity but the quality. but sometimes, quality is also dictated by quantity. e kung 2 hours lang ang maidedeboto ko sa pagsusulat ko, ano'ng quality ng kalalabasan nun? dibah? yun lang yun eh...

shet ngayun pa namang i have to finish this darn young adult novel for my class. sheeeeet. then i have to review my french pa for my language exam by september. sheeeet. oh pardon, meeeeerrrrde (hey, better start practicing na debah). and then that dreaded essay thing for my MA before my thesis per se. bat nga ba ang arte ng requirements sa cw! il n'est pas juste!

but i really wanna move on. tangina magsasampung taon na sa UP centennial ang masters ko pag di ko pa inatupag. syempre ayoko ring maabutan ng "up or out" policy ng peyups no (as in, you have to finish your masters degree in 5 years' time since you first started teaching as a faculty in UP or else sipa ka na -- e second year ko na kaya ngayon. and counting!).

ngarag thy name is bayli.  tambien... mierda.

tangina bakit nga ba puro mura ang una mong natututunan by heart sa isang foreign language? just wondering...

well, i guess i just want to secure my tenure in peyups because i know this is one job i will always come back to, kahit umalis-alis pa ko ng bansa -- yung magturo. kahit ano pang matutunan ko sa labas or sa, hm, malay mo makadagit din ako ng fulbright sa nyu to study film (na naman? hm baka iba naman...jazz vocal performance kaya? teeheee asa pa). or better, ng postgrad grant sa mexico! hehe ma ina-eye ako e. pero well, bahala na. that or virginia women's writer tienes here i apply. ay gudlak sa akin!

as in maintenant!

in short, kitakits tayo ulit sa only truly bohemian-esque place in malate these days, sa penguin café-gallery or as it is known today, rockola café.  but nobody calls it rockola, believe me. it's just penguin.

you can bring your poetry or songs if you want to jam. if you want to pitch your ideas to the crowd, bring your manifestos and declarations. all ideologies and persuasions accepted as long as they are pro-(nice)people. :)

kakanta sina isha at carol. happy to!

ideally, these women's multi-arts events gatherings are created to have a safe space for women to hang out and enjoy as they chill out to the music and words or art. but this is not to say that men aren't allowed. it's not exclusive; it's for open-minded people, is all.

oks?

sige punta na kayo ha. see you there. more info at the culturati picks link to your left.

eto yung official announcement:

BANDIDA ka ba?
sawa na na ba kay MARIAH?
gusto mong MAKARINIG ng ibang musika?
gusto mo bang TUMULA?

haha may nag-react nga dun sa sinulat kong shifting to mac from pc. siguro nasasabi ko lang to kasi nakikita ko ang swabe ng final cut pro sa editing compared to pc-run software. kaya lang i still can't shake off how proprietary mac is (as if di proprietary ang pc hane? hehe) saka haller, puti lahat? ayoko kasi ng puting anything - bahay, kotse, damit, sapatos, appliance (except kung wala talagang choice). i just hate white. kaya di talaga ko na-enganyo, kahit gustong-gusto ko, sa ipod. saka mahal sya ati.

anyway, cinemalaya na next week sa ccp. see you there, rapporteur daw ako sabi ni doc nic. waaah. puwede bang manood na lang ng pelikula? yung isa dun, yung DONSOL na entry ni star cinema writer adolf alix, ay gagamitin daw yung BUTANDING music video ng pinikpikan na shinoot ko dati. for publicity. so abangan niyo yun. sabi nga ni emman, SARUNG BANGGI sequel ito. ah. hm. let's see. kami rin kasi nag-shoot ng video nun, also for pinikpikan.  sayang at natanggal si khavn. gusto ko pa namang makita ang animation chorva niya. saka sina sigrid! makatarungan ba yun? ano na kaya nangyari sa kaso nila...?

06 July 2006

news-hopping

i want i want i want one of these, whatever it is. thnking of shifting to mac kasi... hm. what do u think? i know macheads will roar 'sige sige' pero i have to think pa...

but some bad news here. marlon's discrimination case against miriam college was dismissed. bad trip. this could have been a good example. pero alam ko may laban pa rin ito sa labor body. abangan.

free expression

sabi nga ng aking signature sa emails:

"because there is such a thing as freedom of expression...and fabulousness!"

Jesus loves porn stars just as much as he does pastors and soccer moms, XXXchurch contends. The outreach team from XXXchurch, calling itself a "porn ministry," distributes paperback New Testaments with a gaudy purple-and-yellow cover reading: "Jesus loves porn stars." Its website, billed as the number-one Christian porn site, includes downloadable Bible studies and an array of "prayer software," including "accountability programs" designed to help users resist pornographic temptation.

The Bible's text, in everyday conversational English, includes this introduction from XXXchurch: "Jesus loves pornographers as much as he loves pastors, soccer moms, liars, thieves and prostitutes. We're all just people who need God to save us from the mess we're in, and lead us to a better way."

Pornography brings in more revenue in the US than all of professional football, baseball and basketball franchises combined, according to the conservative research group Family Safe Media.

XXXchurch has taken its message on the road for "porn Sundays," a traveling seminar "to bring healing and recovery to those struggling with pornography." The group estimates that over half of Christian ministers use pornography regularly, and are determined to expose "America's dirty little secret."

It is not made explicitly clear how XXXchurch arrived at this number.

ayuz. dig that prayer software no. i bet they also have a similar software to resist homosexuality heheheheh. ano ang pangalan? hm, siguro "anti-kinsey" hehe. kapag nilagay mo sa computer mo, automatic iba-block niya ang anumang bagay na nakasulat sa cyberspace na may kinalaman sa kabaklaan at may lalabas na laser beam sa gitna ng screen para tamaan ka sa third eye at "ma-cure" ka hehehe. ala lang.

anyway read full article here.

tapos sa isa pang news, tungkol sa na-censor si howie at suspended ang i-witness for 2 weeks. the docu kasi is about this lukayo festival ba yun somewhere in rural philippines where women dance wearing some symbolic eklats and one of them is a wooden phallus. offensive daw sabi ni mtrcb chief laguardia.

sa news item na ito, laguardia also cited ms nessa's reaction, our vp sa public affairs sa siyete. weird lang... but knowing ms nessa, yeah, that's her alright. hehe.

but anyway, ang punto ko ay gusto ko yung reaksyon ni prof. pertierra sa whole shebang na ito sa plaridel egroup ni sir pete lacaba. to quote him:

there is a sweet irony in the censoring of the ritual lukayo on the grounds that it offends filipino sensibilities. here is an example of an authentic native ritual that is seen as offensive by the censor. if anyone had doubted that national standards are invented, imagined and often counterfactual this proves it. it also disabuses ideologues who confuse the indigenous with the national. hence authentic ifugao dances with exposed female breasts are seen as offensive by national standards. we are reminded that the local, informal, indigenous and private worlds are rarely congruent with the formal, politically correct public world of the national.

why has the philippines remained in such a world when our colonial masters spain and america have long abandoned it?

i second that sobra. pumunta kaya sila sa spain at sa US (or cheaply, watch their movies!!!) and see how "liberated" our colonizers are in their approach to culture (well, in general) especially in the depiction of sex and sexuality. hello have you seen films like SEX AND LUCIA? BELLE EPOQUE? dibala, sa spain puwede na akong magpasakal este magpakasal! ah basta you know what i mean!

hay my poor country...

siguro kung si masferre ay naging filmmaker at may mtrcb na nung panahong pinagkukuhanan niya ng litrato yung mga igorot sa bundok, chugi siya ever. but no. his photographs are so wonderful. galing lang men.

hay. do we really need mtrcb? howie mentioned that they just abided by the decision kasi makatarungan naman yun prosesong nilaan sa kanila. but i sense that of course, deep inside, iba ang ek nun.

hm that's an idea...

sige, update ko naman yung announcements blog ko. may mga nice plays ang peta at tanghalang pilipino soon so post ko lang dun. saka pala komikera issue #3 launch later sa chunky far flung gallery sa cubao x (marikina shoe expo area). 730ish. saka pala sa newsdesk near timog ave punchline area (other side of the road), aida santos' women in bliss will have another poetry reading. women and...um, katibakan yata. last sat yung lesbian-themed but i failed to attend it. sayang. anyways meron pa namang isa soon so update ko na lang kayo.

sige kitakits.
